Epic Games Launcher slowness usually comes from one of four places: the install drive, the network path, the launcher’s local cache or configuration, or an Epic service problem. A download that falls to zero is not automatically a bad internet connection: Epic says the launcher can pause while it writes and installs downloaded files, depending on disk speed. Identify which resource is saturated before changing DNS or buying hardware.

“Slow” can describe three different problems

Separate the symptom before troubleshooting. A launcher that takes a long time to open is a different problem from a download that stays at a low rate, and both differ from a download that repeatedly reaches a high rate and then drops to zero.

  • Slow interface: the Epic Games Launcher window, Store, or Library takes a long time to appear or respond.
  • Low download rate: the displayed transfer rate remains below what your connection normally achieves.
  • Cyclical zero rate: data arrives in bursts, then the rate falls to zero while the installation drive works.

The third pattern is often normal install processing rather than a failed connection. Treat each pattern as a separate diagnostic case.

Why a download can fall to zero while the internet is fine

The launcher does more than receive bytes. It downloads chunks, writes them to the selected install drive, verifies them, and may unpack or install them before accepting more data. Epic’s support guidance states: “After you download some files, the Epic Games Launcher can stop downloading depending on your disk speed because it is installing the downloaded files to the disk.” Once the drive finishes that work, downloading resumes.

How storage becomes the bottleneck

An older hard-disk drive (HDD) can struggle with the random reads and writes involved in installing a large game. A nearly full drive has less working room, while antivirus scanning can inspect each new file as it is created. Another program copying files, synchronizing cloud data, recording video, or updating on the same drive can compete with the launcher. In each case, a fast broadband connection can deliver data faster than the computer can safely write and process it.

Confirm the pattern in Windows

  1. Start a game download and wait for the rate to fall.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, and watch the disk that contains the game installation.
  3. Check the disk’s Active time, read/write throughput, and the launcher’s activity in the Processes view. Resource Monitor can show which process is issuing disk operations.
  4. Compare the moments when the rate is zero with periods when the drive is close to fully active. This is an observation for diagnosis, not a guaranteed benchmark of any drive.

If the install drive is busy during every download pause and the rate rises again after the activity subsides, storage is the limiting resource. If disk activity is low while the rate remains poor, continue with network and service checks.

Network causes: test the connection path in the right order

Epic’s official slow-download checklist begins with service availability and then tests the local connection path. Follow that order so a temporary outage is not mistaken for a PC fault.

  1. Check Epic service status. The public status page reports Game Services, Store, Download/Installation, Player Data Storage, and Support-A-Creator. If Download/Installation is impaired, wait for service recovery before changing your PC.
  2. Try wired Ethernet. Connect the PC directly to the router instead of using Wi‑Fi. This tests radio interference, distance, congestion, and driver issues. Ethernet cannot improve a route that is limited by Epic or your internet provider, and it will not overcome a busy install drive.
  3. Try another internet connection. A phone hotspot or another household connection can reveal whether the problem follows your ISP or router. A hotspot may have data caps, so use it only as a short diagnostic test.
  4. Verify the launcher’s download limit is off. An enabled limit can make a healthy connection appear slow. Recheck this setting after launcher updates or account changes.
  5. Review firewall and domain allow-listing. Security software or a restrictive network policy can delay or block required Epic domains. Allow the domains specified in Epic’s support instructions rather than disabling protection wholesale.
  6. Flush DNS and, if necessary, test a public DNS service. DNS affects how the launcher finds services; it does not increase the raw capacity of your broadband plan. Record the original settings so you can revert if another device depends on them.
  7. Disable proxy servers for the test. A proxy or traffic-filtering gateway can add delay or interfere with downloads. Turn it back on if your organization requires it, and test outside that network when possible.

What each controlled test tells you

Test If performance improves Likely area to investigate
Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi Transfers become steadier or faster Wi‑Fi interference, signal strength, channel congestion, or adapter configuration
Another internet connection The same PC downloads normally elsewhere Home router, ISP route, DNS, proxy, or local network policy
Cache cleared The launcher interface or download behavior changes Local launcher cache or configuration
Disk activity falls before the rate resumes Pauses correlate with installation work Install drive, free space, antivirus scanning, or another disk user
No change in any test Symptom persists across paths Epic service status, account-specific issue, launcher installation, or a deeper PC problem

Launcher cache and configuration problems

A damaged or stale launcher cache can make the window, Library, or Store behave slowly. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance includes clearing the Epic Games Launcher cache and obtaining the latest installer. Cache clearing is reversible: it removes temporary web data, not your installed games.

Clear the Windows launcher cache

  1. Exit the launcher from its system-tray icon, then confirm it is not still running in Task Manager.
  2. Press Win+R, enter %localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved, and press Enter.
  3. Delete folders whose names begin with webcache. Do not delete your game installation folders.
  4. Start the launcher again and allow it to rebuild temporary data. The first launch can take a little longer while the cache is recreated.

Do not assume this will raise throughput in every case. It is a diagnostic step for launcher behavior; a storage or network bottleneck will remain after the cache is rebuilt.

Install the current launcher build

If the launcher remains slow after cache clearing, use Epic’s current installer and follow its troubleshooting instructions. Keep the launcher closed during repair or reinstall work, and note the location of existing games so you do not remove them unnecessarily. A reinstall addresses launcher files; it does not repair a failing drive, congested Wi‑Fi, or an Epic service incident.

Hardware and storage: what actually helps

The most defensible hardware upgrade is an internal SSD when your measurements show the install drive is the bottleneck. Choose a drive compatible with the computer’s available interface—SATA for a 2.5-inch SATA bay or NVMe for a compatible M.2 slot. Move the game library or the launcher’s install location to the SSD and keep adequate free space for temporary installation data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not expect a fixed percentage improvement or a guaranteed number of seconds saved. Epic publishes no such benchmark in the cited support material. The benefit depends on the game’s file layout, CPU decompression work, antivirus behavior, and the rest of the PC.

Epic’s launcher baseline is not a performance promise

Requirement listed by Epic for the current Windows launcher Value What it means
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit Older or 32-bit systems are outside the listed baseline.
Processor Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 This is a launcher requirement, not a guarantee of fast game installation.
Available storage 700 MB This covers the launcher baseline, not the space required by a game or its temporary files.

Epic says the new launcher is designed for the same hardware as the legacy launcher. Large games still have their own CPU, memory, graphics, and storage requirements, so meeting the launcher baseline does not guarantee a responsive Library or quick install.

When a Cat6 cable is useful

A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical, low-cost test accessory if you normally use Wi‑Fi. It can remove wireless interference from the equation, but it cannot guarantee a higher rate when the ISP route, Epic service, or install drive is limiting performance. Borrow a cable first if possible; purchase one only after a wired test demonstrates a difference.

  1. Write down the symptom: slow interface, steady low rate, or cyclical drops to zero.
  2. Check Epic’s status page for Download/Installation and related services.
  3. Start one download with other large transfers, game updates, and cloud synchronization paused.
  4. Watch the install drive in Task Manager or Resource Monitor during a pause.
  5. Turn off any Epic download limit and test again.
  6. Repeat the download over wired Ethernet.
  7. Test another internet connection if the wired result is unchanged.
  8. Review DNS, proxy, firewall, and required-domain settings.
  9. Close the launcher, clear its cache, restart it, and test once more.
  10. Only after these checks consider moving the library to an SSD or replacing a drive.

This order prevents an expensive hardware purchase from masking a service outage or a simple configuration limit.

Why Epic may seem slower than Steam on the same PC

A comparison with another launcher is useful only when the conditions match. Different services may select different download servers and routes, use different chunk sizes, or schedule installation work differently. One launcher can also be writing to a different drive or applying a different bandwidth limit.

Run comparable tests: the same wired connection, the same time of day, no competing downloads, and the same destination drive. If Epic’s rate drops to zero while its drive is fully active, the observed difference is an installation bottleneck rather than proof that your internet is slower for Epic. If the disk is quiet and another launcher is consistently faster on the same path, investigate Epic status, DNS, proxy, firewall filtering, and route-specific issues before changing hardware.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Buying an SSD before checking disk activity: confirm the drive is saturated during pauses first.
  • Disabling antivirus or the firewall permanently: use a brief, controlled test or an allow-list entry instead; restore protection immediately.
  • Changing DNS repeatedly: DNS can solve name-resolution problems, but it cannot create bandwidth or fix a busy disk.
  • Judging speed from one burst: measure over several minutes and note whether installation pauses are cyclical.
  • Ignoring free space: leave room for the game and the launcher’s temporary writes.
  • Testing Wi‑Fi only: without Ethernet, you cannot distinguish wireless instability from an upstream limitation.
  • Running several installs at once: concurrent writes can make every individual download appear slower.
  • Assuming the launcher requirement equals a game requirement: 700 MB and the listed processor baseline describe the launcher, not the hardware needed for a particular title.

When to seek further help

Contact Epic support after checking the status page, reproducing the issue on a controlled connection, and clearing the cache. Include the launcher version, Windows version, whether the rate is steady or cyclical, the destination drive type, and what changed when you used Ethernet or another connection. If the drive shows errors, disappears, or remains at 100 percent active time outside downloads, stop troubleshooting the launcher and investigate the drive and Windows storage health separately.
