If Copilot’s screen-context button is grayed out in Windows 11, first check that you’re in a voice conversation with an eligible account and that Copilot can access your microphone. If the Vision control is dimmed only for a particular page or screen, that content may not be supported. Microsoft also notes that feature availability can vary during rollout, so there is no single guaranteed fix for every Copilot screen-sharing control.
First, identify which screen feature is unavailable
Copilot for Windows has two separate ways to provide screen context. Copilot Vision shares a screen or window during a voice conversation, so you can discuss it interactively. Take a Screenshot sends a still image with a typed question. The screenshot option is not a way to enable a dimmed Vision button; it is an alternative workflow for a static question.
Microsoft’s guidance describes Vision as a voice-chat feature, not a control that is available in every text-chat state. See Use vision in Microsoft Copilot and Get started with vision capabilities in Microsoft Copilot.

Start or switch to a voice conversation
Begin a new voice chat in the Copilot experience you are using, then look for its screen-share control. If you are in a text-only conversation, switch to voice before diagnosing the button. Microsoft’s desktop Vision instructions describe starting with a new voice chat and then selecting the screen-sharing control.

Confirm the account is eligible for Vision
Microsoft lists Vision access for users with a Copilot license and work account, or with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium and a personal Microsoft account. Check the account signed in to the Copilot app, and confirm that the eligibility applies to the Copilot experience you opened; account rules can differ across Copilot surfaces. Allow microphone access and confirm an input is available
Vision works during voice conversations and requires microphone access. If Windows or the app has blocked microphone permission, or no working input is available, address that before treating the screen-share control as a separate fault. Microsoft explains the voice-based workflow in Use vision in Microsoft Copilot and lists the prerequisite in Get started with vision capabilities in Microsoft Copilot.

Test another page, window, or app
If the Vision icon is dimmed only for specific content, try a different screen or window. Microsoft’s screen-reader guidance says the icon appears dimmed when page content is unsupported, and Copilot will not answer about that content. That statement is specific to the accessibility guidance; it is a possible explanation for a dimmed icon, not a universal diagnosis for every grayed-out button. Allow for feature rollout and interface differences
Microsoft says, “Vision availability might vary while features roll out.” The control’s label or location may also vary by Copilot experience. If voice chat, account eligibility, microphone access, and the content you are trying to share all appear suitable, availability in that particular experience may still be the limiting factor. Use a screenshot for a question about a still image
If you only need Copilot to inspect what is on screen at one moment, use the Windows app’s screenshot workflow instead of live Vision sharing:
- In Copilot Composer, select +.
- Choose Take a Screenshot.
- Select the relevant area of the screen.
- Type your question and submit it.
This sends a static capture rather than creating an interactive voice conversation. Microsoft documents the Windows app workflow in Access Microsoft Copilot on Windows.

What to note if the control is still unavailable
There is no universal repair established for every button described as a Copilot “screen context” or “share screen” control. When asking for help, specify which Copilot app or experience you opened, whether the conversation is in voice mode, which account is signed in, whether microphone access works, and whether the icon is dimmed for all content or only one page or window. Those details distinguish an unmet prerequisite from unsupported content or feature availability.
