If one AirPod is not charging, first check the battery status for each earbud, then confirm the case has power and the affected AirPod is seated properly. Clean visible debris from the case port safely, charge both AirPods, and reset only if those checks do not help. A persistent problem may need Apple service.
Check whether the AirPod is actually charging
Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and open the case near your paired iPhone or iPad. Check the battery display for each earbud separately; the case’s status light gives only a general indication. Apple describes green as fully charged and amber as less than one full charge remaining, but light location and behavior vary by case generation.
If the affected AirPod’s status does not change after you reseat it, continue with the case and power checks below.

- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Connect the case to a working power source. Use a cable and connector compatible with your particular case. Check that the cable is firmly connected to the case and adapter, and that the adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
- Leave it charging for at least 15 minutes. Apple recommends this minimum when troubleshooting AirPods that will not charge.
- Check the battery status again. If your case supports wireless charging, position it according to Apple’s instructions for that case. Reposition it if it does not indicate charging; try a cable if needed.

Reseat the AirPod and clear visible debris
Remove both earbuds, then place them back in the case and make sure the affected one sits fully in its charging position. Apple’s one-sided troubleshooting recommends charging both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds, then checking on an iPhone or iPad whether each one is charging. If one still shows no charge, inspect the case port for visible debris.
Apple Support’s cleaning guidance says to “Remove any debris from the charging port with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush.” Use the brush gently and only to remove debris. Do not insert objects into the charging ports, scrape the contacts, use abrasives, or let liquid enter the port. Reset the AirPods if charging still fails
After checking power, cable connections, battery status, seating, and visible debris, a reset is a reasonable next step. Resetting returns custom settings to their defaults, and the procedure varies by AirPods model. Follow Apple’s current model-specific reset instructions rather than applying a sequence intended for a different generation.
When to contact Apple Support
If the same AirPod still will not charge after these checks and a model-specific reset, contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple says a damaged AirPod may be replaceable, but coverage, service options, and any out-of-warranty fee depend on the device, warranty status, AppleCare+, consumer-law protections, and location. Check the terms for your region and model before assuming a repair or replacement is covered.
