A router that seems to allow only one device at a time may not have a one-device limit. The second device might be blocked by an access-control setting, unable to get a valid network address, or restricted by the hotel, hotspot, or internet service upstream of your router. Start by identifying whether it cannot join Wi-Fi or joins without internet; those symptoms point to different causes.

First, identify what “only one device” means

Watch what happens when the second device tries to connect. A device that cannot join the Wi-Fi network has a different problem from one that joins but cannot reach the internet. If it connects only after the first device disconnects, the restriction could be in the router or in the network supplying its internet connection.

  • Cannot join Wi-Fi: Check the password and router access controls.
  • Joins Wi-Fi but has no internet: Check the device’s IP settings, the router’s DHCP configuration, and the upstream connection.
  • Works only when another device disconnects: Check whether a managed or public network limits the number of devices, and whether the router is actually providing the connection.

There is no universal one-device limit established for routers. Capacity and features depend on the specific model, firmware, and operating mode.

Determine whether the problem follows one device

Try connecting a second phone or computer while the first device remains connected. Then test the device that failed on another Wi-Fi network. If the issue follows just one phone or computer, its settings are a more likely place to investigate than a router-wide restriction. TP-Link provides device-specific troubleshooting guidance in its single-device connection guide.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

If multiple devices fail in the same way on this network, focus on the router and its internet source. Note the exact message shown, and whether the affected device says it is connected to Wi-Fi.

Check router access controls

In the router’s app or administration page, look for settings called Access Control, MAC Filtering, Allow List, Whitelist, or Block List. An allow-list may restrict network access to devices you have approved; a deny-list may block specific devices. A device can sometimes see the Wi-Fi name yet still be denied access. TP-Link explains these options in its access-control guide.

Check the affected device’s IP settings and the router’s DHCP range

Most home devices should obtain their IP configuration automatically through DHCP. A manually assigned static address that does not match the network’s subnet, gateway, or DNS settings can prevent communication even when Wi-Fi appears connected. Unless you deliberately configured a static address, set the device to obtain its IP address automatically.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

On the router, confirm DHCP is enabled if that router is responsible for assigning addresses. Also inspect its address-pool range and connected-device list for an exhausted or unexpected pool. DHCP supplies devices with network addressing information; NETGEAR describes its role and configuration considerations in its DHCP support article.

Do not turn DHCP off casually. If no other DHCP server is providing addresses, devices may need manually configured IP settings to communicate. NETGEAR notes that model applicability varies; consult the documentation for your router before changing this setting.

Find out whether the limit is upstream

On hotel Wi-Fi, a public hotspot, a managed dorm network, or an internet service with device restrictions, the limit may be imposed by the network operator rather than your own router. Check the service’s terms and sign-in process, or ask its operator how many devices are allowed. TP-Link’s Archer AX3000 quick-start guide describes public hotspots that restrict devices by MAC address and a Router mode for sharing an existing wired connection that is limited to one device at a time.

That travel-router workaround applies to the specific case of an eligible single-device wired connection, such as one supplied by a modem or other network device. It is not a general fix for a home router’s access-control or DHCP settings, and it will not override a provider’s authentication rules or terms. Confirm the connection type, permitted use, and compatibility with the exact router model before relying on this option.

Try low-risk connection checks

Once you have checked access controls, IP settings, and the upstream service, try these basic steps:

  1. Confirm the Wi-Fi password, then forget or remove the saved network on the affected device and join it again.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on on that device.
  3. Restart the affected device, router, and modem as appropriate.
  4. Consult the router’s model-specific instructions before changing its wireless channel or channel width.

These checks are included in TP-Link’s single-device troubleshooting guidance. Avoid changing several router settings at once; otherwise, it is harder to identify what resolved the issue.

What to collect if it still fails

Before contacting the router maker or internet provider, record the router make and model, firmware version, which device connects first, the second device’s exact error, and whether that device receives an IP address. Also note whether the same devices work on another network and whether the upstream modem or connection works when tested as the provider permits. These details help separate a client setting, router configuration, and service-side restriction.

Do not replace or factory-reset the router as a first step. Neither action is likely to fix a client’s static-IP mistake or an upstream device limit, and a reset can erase working network settings.
