If one press produces two characters, the most likely cause is switch contact chatter: the metal contacts make and break several times before settling, and the keyboard registers more than one transition. Firmware debounce, debris, a cable or USB problem, keyboard settings, and a fault in the socket or PCB can produce similar symptoms.
Work from reversible checks to hardware diagnosis. Confirm the symptom, clean and reconnect the board, apply only model-specific firmware or debounce guidance, and use a switch swap test if the keyboard is hot-swappable. Replace a switch only when the fault follows that switch; otherwise, preserve your warranty and contact the manufacturer.
What “double typing” actually means
First distinguish three behaviors:
- One tap creates two characters: for example, pressing
eonce producesee. This is consistent with multiple key events being generated from one physical press. - A character repeats only while you hold the key: this may be ordinary operating-system repeat behavior, an unintended long hold, or a key that is not releasing cleanly.
- The problem appears only in one application: an application, macro, text-expansion tool, or input setting may be involved rather than the keyboard hardware.
Test the same key in a plain text field and, if practical, on another computer. Those checks isolate the keyboard from a particular application or computer, but they do not by themselves identify a failed switch.
Recommended Free Tools
Also note the pattern. Does the same letter duplicate on every press, only after the keyboard has been used for a while, or only occasionally? Does one key misbehave, or do several keys across the board do it? A single affected key points more strongly toward that switch or its position, while several unrelated keys make firmware, connection, or a broader board problem more important to investigate. These observations are not a diagnosis, but they make later support conversations and swap tests much more useful.

The main causes
Contact chatter inside a switch
Mechanical switches do not always produce one perfectly clean electrical transition. As contacts settle, the signal can move between open and closed states several times. QMK’s firmware documentation describes this as contact bounce or contact chatter: “Mechanical switches often don’t have a clean single transition between pressed and unpressed states.” A keyboard normally uses debounce logic to wait for a stable state or filter extra transitions. If the switch is worn, contaminated, or unusually sensitive, the chatter can exceed the filtering that the keyboard applies.
Switch type, age, and pressing technique can affect how long the contacts take to settle. A switch that worked reliably for months can begin producing duplicate events without any visible damage. Chatter can also be intermittent, so a key may pass a short test and then duplicate again later.
Firmware or debounce configuration
Firmware decides when an electrical transition becomes a key event. Outdated firmware, a firmware bug, or an aggressive debounce setting can allow extra transitions through. Some keyboards expose a debounce control; many do not. The correct values and update procedure depend on the exact model and firmware platform, so a setting from one keyboard should not be copied to another.
Firmware is also why a switch can appear healthy in one board and unreliable in another. The same physical switch may be filtered differently by different firmware, and a reset can remove a configuration change that was creating unexpected input. Do not assume that installing open-source firmware or changing a low-level value is automatically safer than using the manufacturer’s supported procedure.
Debris, moisture, or physical contamination
Dust, hair, crumbs, and residue can interfere with a key’s movement or contacts. Contamination is especially plausible when only one or two keys misbehave or when the problem began after eating or drinking near the keyboard. Liquid can damage more than the switch, so never pour cleaner into a switch or the keyboard housing.
Cleaning is a first-line check, not proof that the switch is permanently fixed. If the symptom returns after cleaning, document that result and continue with firmware and isolation tests rather than repeatedly spraying or flooding the board.

Cable, USB port, hub, or connection faults
An unstable connection can create unexpected input behavior or make troubleshooting misleading. A loose detachable cable, a damaged cable, a problematic USB port, or an unreliable hub should be ruled out before opening the keyboard. A direct connection to the computer and a known-good compatible cable are useful comparisons when the board supports a removable cable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA fault at the keyboard position
If the problem remains with one physical key position even after a known-good switch is installed, the hot-swap socket, PCB trace, diode, firmware, or another board-level part may be responsible. That is not a switch-replacement problem. A socket can also be damaged if a switch is installed at an angle or pulled with excessive force, which is why the board maker’s removal instructions matter.
Operating-system repeat filtering
Windows includes FilterKeys options that control repeat behavior, including BounceKeys, which can ignore unintended repeated keystrokes. This can reduce visible duplicates, but it changes what the computer accepts; it does not repair a switch or prove that the keyboard is healthy. Filtering may also suppress legitimate rapid typing and add a noticeable delay, so treat it as a diagnostic aid or temporary workaround.
Fixes in the safest order
1. Confirm the pattern before changing anything
- Open a simple text editor or keyboard test page that does not add macros or text expansion.
- Press the affected key slowly several times, then at your normal speed. Note whether one tap creates two characters every time or only occasionally.
- Try a second application. If only one program duplicates characters, inspect that program’s shortcuts, macros, and input settings.
- If possible, connect the keyboard to another computer. Record whether the same physical key behaves the same way.
- Test a few unaffected keys for comparison and write down the exact key names, applications, and operating systems involved.
Do not call a key “bad” solely because it repeats while held. Operating-system repeat timing and a key that is physically held down are different from two registrations caused by one tap. A short video of a single press producing two characters can later help support staff understand the symptom.
2. Disconnect, clean, and reconnect
- Unplug the keyboard or switch it off before cleaning.
- Remove loose debris using the manufacturer’s approved method. Hold the keyboard so debris can fall out rather than being pushed deeper into the switches.
- Do not pour liquid into a switch, spray unapproved cleaner into the case, or continue using a board that has been exposed to a spill until it is safely inspected and dry.
- Reconnect the cable firmly at the keyboard and computer. Try a direct USB port instead of a hub, and test a known-good compatible cable if the design uses a detachable one.
- Retest the same key in more than one application.
Cleaning and connection checks are low-risk and reversible. If duplicates continue in multiple applications and on another computer, move to firmware and hardware isolation. Disconnecting power also reduces the chance of pressing or pulling components while the board is energized.
3. Follow the exact model’s firmware instructions
Open the keyboard maker’s support page for the exact model and revision. Look for a current firmware package, reset procedure, release notes, and any documented debounce setting. Keychron’s troubleshooting guidance, for example, recommends updating firmware and changing debounce time only on models that support that control.

- Use the firmware file and updater intended for your model and operating system.
- Keep the keyboard connected directly and avoid interrupting power during an update.
- Do not use a key combination or firmware file copied from a different model.
- After updating or resetting, test the affected key before changing several other settings.
- Record the original firmware version and the date of the update so you can describe exactly what changed.
QMK’s debounce algorithms illustrate why a setting can matter: the firmware waits or filters so the several transitions produced while a contact settles do not become separate key events. QMK configuration examples apply to QMK firmware, not universally to every commercial keyboard. The settling time can vary with switch type, age, and pressing technique, so there is no single debounce value that is correct for every board.
4. Use Windows filtering only as a diagnostic or temporary workaround
In Windows, open the current Accessibility keyboard settings and review Filter Keys. The labels and path can vary by Windows release; use Microsoft’s current support instructions for your version. FilterKeys and BounceKeys can ignore rapid repeated input.
Enable the smallest change that lets you test the symptom, then type normally for a while. Filtering may add perceived delay or suppress legitimate rapid keystrokes. If it hides duplicates but the switch still fails in firmware-level tests or on another computer, treat the setting as a workaround rather than a repair. Turn it back off when comparing results so software filtering does not obscure a hardware diagnosis.
Diagnosing a switch on a hot-swappable keyboard
A hot-swappable board lets you remove a switch without desoldering it. The swap test is the most useful way to separate a switch fault from a fault that stays at a keyboard position.
Before you pull a switch
- Confirm in the manual that the board is designed for hot-swapping. A socketed board and a soldered board are not interchangeable.
- Check the warranty and the maker’s instructions. Opening the case or replacing parts may affect support on some products.
- Obtain a switch puller and follow the board maker’s removal method. Do not lever against the PCB with a screwdriver.
- Unplug the keyboard, remove the keycap, and work on a stable, well-lit surface.
- Take a photo of the switch orientation before removal if you are unfamiliar with the board.
Swap-test procedure
- Choose the suspect switch and a nearby key that is known to work.
- Remove both switches with the puller, gripping the switch housing rather than twisting the socket.
- Install the suspect switch in the known-good position and the known-good switch in the suspect position. Align the switch pins and any plastic locating post before pressing straight down.
- Reconnect the keyboard and test both positions in the same applications used earlier.
- Compare the result with the original behavior and repeat the test if the first result is ambiguous.
| Result | What it indicates | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The duplicate-input problem moves with the switch | The switch is implicated. | Replace it with a switch that matches the board’s socket, pin layout, mounting style, and electrical specifications, subject to warranty guidance. |
| The original key position still duplicates, while the moved switch works normally | The socket, PCB, diode, firmware, or another position-specific part may be at fault. | Stop replacing switches and use the manufacturer’s support or repair route. |
| Both positions behave inconsistently | The test may be affected by an installation problem, firmware, connection, or more than one fault. | Recheck switch seating, repeat firmware and connection checks, and document the behavior for support. |
Do not perform this procedure on a soldered switch as though it were removable. A soldered board requires desoldering equipment and technique; if you are not equipped and the warranty permits service, manufacturer support or a qualified repair technician is safer. Never buy replacement switches first simply because the symptom sounds like chatter. The swap result is what makes that purchase relevant.
Choosing a compatible replacement switch
If the fault follows the switch, compare the replacement against the keyboard’s documented requirements. Check the socket type and pin layout, whether the board expects a particular mounting style, and the switch’s electrical specifications. Physical fit alone is not enough: a switch that enters the plate may still have incompatible pins or electrical characteristics.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Buy a replacement only after checking the exact board model and warranty terms. Keep the removed switch and note which position it came from. If the replacement does not solve the issue, that record helps you reverse the change and gives the manufacturer a clear troubleshooting history. A switch puller is useful only for a board designed for hot-swapping; it is not a substitute for desoldering equipment on a soldered keyboard.

| Option | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware update or supported debounce adjustment | The model’s support documentation identifies a firmware update or debounce control, especially when the symptom is not tied to one switch. | Controls and procedures are model-specific; an update cannot fix a physically damaged contact. |
| Compatible replacement switch | The fault follows the switch during a hot-swap test. | Compatibility must be verified, and opening the board may affect warranty support. |
| Windows FilterKeys or BounceKeys | You need a temporary way to reduce duplicate input while diagnosing the keyboard. | It filters events at the operating-system level and may change typing feel or responsiveness. |
| Manufacturer support or warranty exchange | The fault stays at one board position, the keyboard is soldered, firmware checks fail, or the problem persists after cleaning and connection tests. | Eligibility, exchange terms, and procedures vary by model and region. |
Base the decision on the diagnosis, board design, compatibility, warranty risk, and whether the proposed remedy addresses the cause rather than merely hiding symptoms. No general failure-rate or repair-success percentage establishes that one option is universally best. A setting may cost nothing but still leave a deteriorating switch in place; a replacement may be straightforward on a hot-swap board but inappropriate while a warranty claim is available; service may be the sensible route when the fault stays at the PCB position.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact the manufacturer when duplicates persist after the documented firmware procedure and basic connection checks, when the fault remains at the same position after a valid hot-swap test, or when the board is still under warranty. Save the keyboard model and revision, firmware version, operating system, affected keys, applications tested, and the result of any switch swap. A short video showing one press producing two characters can make the report clearer.
Support policies are product-specific. For example, the guidance for a particular K70 Core model directs affected owners to contact support for assistance or an exchange after following its firmware instructions; that policy should not be assumed for another model or country. Check the warranty before soldering, opening the case, or replacing parts. If the keyboard is soldered and you do not have the appropriate equipment, describe the symptom and request the approved repair route instead of forcing a switch out.
Preventing recurring chatter
- Keep food, drinks, and loose debris away from the board.
- Clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions and disconnect power first.
- Use only firmware and configuration tools intended for the exact model.
- When replacing a confirmed failed switch, retain the original part and document the swap in case warranty service is needed.
- Do not increase operating-system filtering indefinitely if it masks a worsening hardware fault; arrange a durable repair instead.
- Keep the keyboard’s model, revision, and firmware information with your purchase records so warranty questions are easier to answer.
Quick decision checklist
- Does one tap create two characters, or does the key merely repeat while held?
- Does the behavior appear in more than one application and, if available, on another computer?
- Have you disconnected the board, removed loose debris safely, and checked the cable and USB port?
- Does the exact model’s support page provide a firmware update or debounce control?
- Is the board hot-swappable, and does the fault follow the switch in a controlled swap test?
- Before buying parts or opening the case, have you checked compatibility and warranty terms?
- Have you recorded the affected key, firmware version, test applications, and whether filtering changed the symptom?
If the answer to the swap test is that the fault stays at the keyboard position, the next step is service, not another switch. If it follows the switch, a compatible replacement is a reasonable diagnosis-based repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is double typing always caused by a bad mechanical switch?
No. Contact chatter is common, but firmware or debounce settings, debris, a cable or USB connection, operating-system filtering, and a fault in the socket or PCB can produce similar symptoms. Use a hot-swap test when available before buying a replacement.

How can I tell whether the problem is software or hardware?
Test the key in a plain text editor and another application, then connect the keyboard to another computer if possible. If the same key duplicates across applications and computers, hardware or keyboard firmware becomes more likely, but only a model-appropriate diagnosis can identify the failed part.
Can I fix chatter with Windows FilterKeys?
FilterKeys and BounceKeys can ignore some rapid repeated input, so they may reduce visible duplicates. They filter events in Windows rather than repairing the switch. They can also add delay or suppress legitimate fast keystrokes, so use them as a diagnostic aid or temporary workaround.
Should I replace a switch if one key double types?
Only after a valid hot-swap swap test shows that the fault follows the switch, and only after checking compatibility and warranty terms. If the duplicate input stays at the original keyboard position, the socket, PCB, diode, firmware, or another board-level part may need service instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I swap switches on any mechanical keyboard?
No. The board must be designed for hot-swapping. A soldered switch cannot be removed like a socketed switch; it requires desoldering equipment and technique. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and warranty policy before opening the keyboard.
What information should I send to keyboard support?
Provide the exact model and revision, firmware version, operating system, affected keys, applications and computers tested, cable or port checks, cleaning steps, and the result of any switch swap. A short video of one press producing two characters can clarify the symptom.
The Bottom Line
Start with confirmation, cleaning, cable and port checks, and the exact model’s firmware guidance. On a hot-swappable board, let the swap test decide whether the switch or the keyboard position is at fault. Replace a compatible switch only when the fault follows it; otherwise, stop filtering symptoms and use the manufacturer’s support or warranty route.
