A computer that suddenly feels slow does not have one automatic diagnosis. Limited storage, background apps, outdated software, malware, too many open apps or tabs, or aging hardware can all contribute. First work out whether the whole computer or one task is affected, then check the evidence before changing settings or buying anything.
Start by narrowing down what changed
Note whether the slowdown affects the whole system or just one app, whether it happens only during startup or continues afterward, and whether it began after an app installation, a connected device, or an operating-system update. These clues help you choose what to inspect; none proves a cause by itself.
Microsoft Support describes limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current demands as possible reasons a Windows device may run slowly. Other factors, including malware or having many apps and browser tabs open, can also contribute. A slow computer is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
What to check first on Windows
- Inspect resource use and startup activity. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. Review Processes and Performance for apps or resources under unusually heavy load, and open Startup apps to review what launches automatically. Menu labels may vary by Windows version. Close apps or browser tabs you do not need; disable a startup item only if you recognize it and do not need it to launch automatically. - Restart the computer. Save your work, then restart. This can clear a temporary issue; if the slowdown returns, continue investigating rather than treating the restart as a diagnosis.
- Check storage. Open Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft notes that low disk space can reduce performance. Review the categories and use Storage Sense or temporary-file cleanup where appropriate. Check what will be removed before confirming, and keep a safe copy of important files before deleting anything.
- Scan for malware. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. Malware is one possible cause because it can consume CPU and disk resources; a slowdown alone does not mean the computer is infected.
- Install available updates. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Select optional driver updates only when relevant to a problem or device you recognize, rather than installing them indiscriminately.
Change one relevant thing at a time and observe whether performance changes. That makes it easier to tell which step helped.

What to check first on a Mac
- Look for resource-heavy processes. Open Activity Monitor and inspect CPU and memory use. If the Mac is sluggish or unresponsive, an app or process may be responsible; look for persistent high use before quitting anything. Force-quitting a process you do not recognize can disrupt work or system activity.
- Check available startup-disk space. Review the storage information for your macOS version. Apple recommends making room by moving files to another disk or external storage. Confirm that important files are copied safely before deleting or moving originals. An external drive can provide space when needed, but it will not address unrelated causes such as a resource-heavy app.
- Test login items if the slowdown is tied to startup. Record the current login items, remove them temporarily, and restart. If startup improves, add the items back one at a time, restarting or checking performance between changes, to identify a possible culprit. Apple notes that a login item can occasionally cause startup problems.
Apple’s Activity Monitor and login-item guidance is for Mac; exact controls and menu names can differ across macOS versions.
When the computer still feels slow
If the same severe slowdown persists after you have checked resource use, storage, startup activity, malware, and updates, seek help from the device manufacturer or a qualified technician. Crashes or drive errors alongside poor performance are additional reasons to get the device assessed rather than repeatedly deleting files or changing settings.

On an older computer, software cleanup may not produce a significant improvement if the hardware no longer meets the demands of the apps and operating system you use. Microsoft cautions that outdated hardware may limit the benefit of its performance steps. Whether an upgrade is possible or worthwhile depends on the exact computer model and compatible parts; do not buy a component based on the slowdown alone.
Windows 10 support is a separate consideration
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. This support change does not, by itself, explain a sudden slowdown. Check whether your device can move to Windows 11 and review Microsoft’s current guidance for your situation.
