A slow computer can be caused by a full drive, an app using too many resources, too much startup activity, malware on Windows, outdated software, or hardware that has reached its limits. Start by checking what is happening while the slowdown occurs; the right fix depends on the evidence, and cleanup cannot overcome every hardware constraint.
First, work out when the slowdown happens
Notice whether the whole computer is slow all the time, whether it is slow only during startup, or whether one app or task triggers the problem. Close work you do not need and restart once. If the slowdown returns, check resource use while it is happening: Task Manager on Windows and Activity Monitor on Mac can show whether an app or process is using substantial CPU or memory.
If only one app causes trouble, investigate that app before making system-wide changes. Check its system requirements and compatibility with your operating system. Apple specifically recommends checking an app’s requirements and quitting apps that are not compatible with your Mac. Apple’s Mac troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
Check storage separately from memory
A nearly full drive and limited available memory are different problems, even though either can make a computer feel sluggish. Check storage using the tools for your operating system, then inspect CPU and memory use separately. There is no universal free-space percentage established by the cited guidance, so avoid treating a single threshold as a diagnosis.

On Windows
Open Settings and look under System > Storage. Windows also provides Storage Sense, temporary-file cleanup, and Disk Cleanup. Review the selected files before removing them; do not delete personal files just to free space unless you have confirmed they are no longer needed. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance describes these built-in options.
On Mac
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage to review available space and macOS recommendations. Apple says you can move files to another disk or an external storage device and remove unneeded copies from the startup disk. See Apple’s instructions for freeing storage space on a Mac.
Fix common causes on Windows
Microsoft’s recommendations apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Try the steps that match what you found rather than changing every setting at once.

Install Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements; wording and available options may vary by Windows version. Microsoft also suggests considering optional driver updates when relevant.
Scan for malware
Open the Windows Security app and run a malware scan. Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so this is a useful check when resource use is unexplained or other symptoms raise concern. Follow Windows Security’s results rather than installing an unfamiliar cleanup utility.
Reduce startup and background activity
Disable startup apps you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Unused apps can occupy storage and contribute to background activity, while unnecessary startup apps can lengthen boot time. Uninstall apps you no longer use only after confirming you do not need them.

Identify resource-heavy apps in Task Manager
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then inspect Processes and Performance while the computer is slow. Look for unusually high CPU, memory, or disk use. Close only apps you recognize and are not using; avoid ending unfamiliar processes that may be needed by Windows or another app.
Try a restart and reduce open work
Close unused apps and browser tabs, then restart if performance does not improve. This is a simple way to clear a temporary problem, but if the slowdown returns, use the resource and storage checks to find its cause rather than repeatedly restarting.
Use the performance power mode only when its trade-offs make sense
Windows’ Best performance power mode may help when you need maximum performance, but it uses more power, can drain a laptop battery faster, and can make the device warmer. It is not a general fix for a full drive, a resource-heavy app, or aging hardware.

Use Device performance & health as a secondary check
In Windows Security, the Device performance & health report checks areas including storage capacity, battery, apps and software, and Windows Time, and may offer recommendations. It can flag health issues, but it does not replace observing the slowdown in Task Manager. Details are in Microsoft’s Device performance & health guidance.
Fix common causes on Mac
Free startup-disk space if storage is tight
Review the Storage screen in System Settings > General and act on recommendations that fit your needs. Moving large files to another disk or external storage can free startup-disk space; verify that the transferred files are safely accessible before deleting local copies.
Use Activity Monitor to find a troublesome process
Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, then inspect CPU and memory use while the Mac is sluggish. It can help identify an app or process associated with the problem. Quit an app you recognize and no longer need; do not terminate an unfamiliar system process without understanding its role. Apple’s Activity Monitor User Guide explains how to monitor CPU and memory and close processes.

Interpret memory pressure instead of chasing “free RAM”
Activity Monitor’s Memory view includes a memory-pressure indicator. Apple says memory pressure reflects how efficiently memory is being used; unused memory by itself does not necessarily improve performance. Whether memory can be added or replaced depends on the exact Mac model, so check model-specific serviceability before considering an upgrade. See Apple’s guidance on checking whether a Mac needs more RAM.
Check app requirements and compatibility
An app may need more memory than is readily available, or it may not be compatible with the Mac. Check the app maker’s system requirements and close incompatible apps before treating the issue as a computer-wide fault.

| What you notice | What to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Startup is slow, but work feels normal afterward | Windows startup apps; login or background items on Mac | Disable only unneeded startup or background apps, then check again after restarting. Microsoft specifically documents startup-app management for Windows. |
| One app makes the whole computer sluggish | Task Manager or Activity Monitor CPU and memory use; app requirements | Close or update the app, check compatibility, and investigate it before broad cleanup. |
| The drive is nearly full | Windows Storage tools or Mac Storage settings | Review and remove unneeded or temporary files; on Mac, consider moving large files to another disk or external storage. |
| Malware or unexplained resource use is suspected | Windows Security scan and the relevant resource monitor | Run a Windows Security scan on Windows and investigate any identified high-use process. The cited guidance does not establish an equivalent Mac malware-removal procedure. |
| Basic fixes do not help and the computer is old | Exact model, supported operating system, and upgrade or serviceability information | Check model-specific repair or replacement options. Do not assume a RAM or storage upgrade is compatible. |
Know when software fixes have reached their limit
If updates, storage management, and reducing unnecessary activity do not resolve the slowdown, the computer may be constrained by its age or hardware. Microsoft warns that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from its recommended steps and says upgrading the device may be the best long-term option. That does not establish which part, if any, can be upgraded in a particular computer; compatibility depends on the exact model.
