Linux is valuable not because it has one established dollar price, but because it underpins a huge range of computing, draws on shared engineering, and can be adapted to many kinds of hardware and workloads. “Free” here means free to use; building, securing, supporting, and maintaining a Linux system can still cost money.
1. Linux reaches across an enormous computing footprint
Linux is a kernel used in systems ranging from mobile devices and servers to supercomputers. The Linux Foundation’s 2026 35 Years of Linux page reports 4 billion Android devices, more than 200 million servers, and Linux on all 500 systems in the world’s TOP500 supercomputer ranking. These are the Foundation’s reported impact figures, not an independently verified device census in this article.
That reach matters because foundational software can create value well beyond the machines on which people directly notice it. The same kernel project supports products and infrastructure used at very different scales.

When organizations build on open-source software, they can share and reuse work rather than each starting from scratch. A Linux Foundation survey announcement published in 2023 reported that more than 430 companies were surveyed and almost two-thirds said open-source benefits clearly exceeded costs. Respondents identified cost savings and faster development among the benefits.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
Those findings concern open-source software generally, not Linux alone. They report company perceptions; they do not prove that adopting Linux causes a particular saving or that every organization will spend less. Jim Zemlin, the Linux Foundation’s executive director, said the findings showed open source had substantial economic value to companies and that its value would increase for most organizations the longer and more they used it. The statement reflects the survey’s broad open-source context, not a Linux-specific valuation. Read the Foundation’s survey announcement.
3. Linux is the product of sustained collaborative engineering
The Linux kernel is not a finished, static download: developers continue to maintain and change it. Its upstream introduction describes a project with more than 8 million lines of code and well over 1,000 contributors to each release. Those are figures from the Linux kernel documentation’s introduction, and should be understood as documentation claims that may change over time.

- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2

- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
The Foundation’s October 6, 2026 report announcement characterizes kernel development as nearly ten changes per hour, with a new release every eight to nine weeks. That cadence is a snapshot of active development, not a guarantee that every release arrives on an exact schedule. See the Foundation’s 2026 report announcement.
This collaborative model is one reason Linux can be economically significant without being sold as a single product at a single price. The engineering effort is real; its cost is shared across a broad ecosystem rather than disappearing because users may access the software without a license fee.

4. One kernel can serve very different hardware and workloads
The kernel documentation describes Linux’s reach from pocket-sized music players to desktop computers and supercomputers. That range illustrates adaptability: a common kernel project can be configured and incorporated into systems with very different roles, hardware constraints, and performance needs.
Adaptability does not mean every Linux installation is interchangeable or effortless to maintain. Products and deployments still need suitable hardware support, configuration, and ongoing operations. But the ability to build across many categories helps explain why kernel development can matter to organizations that make or run very different kinds of systems.

5. Open standards and interoperability have strategic value
The Linux Foundation’s 2023 survey also identified open standards and interoperability as perceived benefits of open-source software. In practical terms, organizations may value the ability to work across systems and adapt software to their needs. These are strategic benefits, not proof that every deployment avoids dependence on vendors or that Linux is automatically less expensive than proprietary alternatives.
