Mars may once have offered environments where life could survive, but “habitable” is not the same as “inhabited.” Organic molecules, minerals and rock textures can form through non-biological processes; water, radiation and geologic change can erase or alter traces; and rovers examine only tiny, selected portions of the planet. NASA therefore treats the most interesting recent findings—including the Cheyava Falls (Sapphire Canyon) sample—as potential biosignatures, not discoveries of life.
Confirmation requires several independent measurements that agree on a biological explanation and rule out credible non-living alternatives. That standard is difficult to meet with remote instruments and small samples, but returned material examined in Earth laboratories could provide the detailed evidence needed.
“Could Mars support life?” is a different question from “Did Mars have life?”
Planetary scientists first ask whether an environment was habitable: did it have liquid water or another usable solvent, energy sources and the chemical ingredients life needs? NASA’s Mars science objectives describe ancient environments, including the Jezero basin, that may once have met those conditions. Geological evidence of an ancient lake makes Jezero an important place to search, but it does not demonstrate that organisms ever lived there. A suitable environment can exist without life arising, and any organisms that did exist may have left no surviving trace.

This distinction is fundamental because “evidence of habitability” and “evidence of biology” are different scientific conclusions. A lake deposit, water-altered mineral or carbon-bearing compound can establish that Mars had a potentially favorable setting while leaving the question of biology open. NASA explains the goals and limits of this reasoning in its Mars Science Objectives overview and its discussion, “Was There Life on Mars?”.

Organic molecules are clues, not a verdict
“Organic” in planetary science means a compound containing carbon, often with hydrogen and other elements. It does not mean “made by an organism.” Carbon chemistry can be generated by geological reactions, delivered by meteorites or dust, or produced by biology. The same molecule can therefore have several possible histories.
Curiosity’s instruments have detected a range of carbon-bearing compounds in Martian rocks. Those detections show that Mars preserved complex chemistry, but the instruments generally cannot identify the process that produced every molecule. NASA/JPL explicitly cautions that confirming organics is not confirmation that life existed in Jezero or left biosignatures. The context around a molecule—its mineral host, concentration, distribution and relationship to other compounds—matters as much as its chemical formula. See NASA/JPL’s account of the rover’s findings at NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover Makes Surprising Discoveries.
What scientists mean by “potential biosignature”
NASA uses the term deliberately. A potential biosignature is “a substance or structure that could be evidence of past life but may also have been produced without the presence of life.” The label records an observation and its scientific significance without claiming that the biological interpretation has won. A candidate becomes more persuasive when independent observations point to the same biological explanation and when known abiotic explanations fail to account for the complete pattern.
This is why a striking image, an unusual mineral patch or an organic compound is normally described as a candidate or potential biosignature. The wording is not evasive; it identifies an unresolved inference. NASA gives the formal definition in its report on a Perseverance sample at Rock Sampled by NASA’s Perseverance Embodies Why Rover Came to Mars.
Martian geology can preserve evidence—or destroy it
Any ancient biological trace has had to survive billions of years of radiation, oxidation, impacts, temperature changes and chemical alteration. Water can help in one setting and erase evidence in another. Minerals formed when water moved through rock may trap or protect organic material, while later fluids can dissolve, transform or redistribute it. Sediments can bury and shield compounds, but exposed surfaces can be degraded.

Preservation is therefore part of the interpretation, not a separate afterthought. If an organic molecule occurs inside a mineral environment known to protect carbon and is arranged in a pattern that non-living chemistry struggles to reproduce, scientists can assign it more weight than an isolated surface detection. Even then, preservation supports a hypothesis; it does not by itself prove that the original source was biological.
Why a search can find nothing even if life once existed
A negative result is also ambiguous. A rover may miss the most informative layer, drill material that never contained organisms, or sample a location where traces were destroyed. Ancient life could have been sparse, localized or chemically unlike the targets an instrument was designed to detect. NASA lists degradation, sampling bias and the possibility that a habitable environment never produced life as explanations for an absence of evidence. “No detection” therefore does not mean “life was impossible,” just as one intriguing detection does not mean “life was present.”

Perseverance and Curiosity carry sophisticated laboratories, but rover instruments have finite power, mass, resolution and chemical capability. They must analyze material in place or after a small amount is crushed and delivered to an instrument. A rover cannot bring every promising rock, repeat every laboratory procedure or preserve unlimited material for future tests.
Sampling is selective by necessity. Engineers choose targets that can be reached safely and that fit the mission’s scientific objectives. A single core may represent a particular mineral vein or sediment layer rather than the whole outcrop. The spatial relationship between grains, layers and organic compounds can be difficult to resolve from rover-scale measurements, and an instrument may report a mixture whose components had different origins.
These constraints make context essential. Scientists compare a candidate target with nearby rocks, examine its mineralogy and texture, and ask whether the observed chemistry matches the history inferred from the surrounding geology. A result that looks extraordinary in isolation may become ordinary when the broader rock record is considered.

Contamination controls are necessary for a credible result
Earth is rich in organic material. Skin oils, cleaning agents, laboratory solvents, packaging compounds and microorganisms could all create a false Martian signal if they reached a sample. Perseverance’s sample tubes were therefore cleaned and monitored under strict planetary-protection procedures before launch and during mission operations. The goal is not to make the tubes chemically empty—an impossible standard—but to keep Earth-derived material below levels that would confuse interpretation.
NASA/JPL’s sample-tube account gives two important limits for the tube set: less than 150 nanograms of total Earth-based organic compounds per tube, and less than 15 nanograms for a selected group considered especially indicative of life. These are contamination-control thresholds reported in the account’s original circa-2020 context; they are not estimates of the probability that Mars had life. The procedures and rationale are described at A Martian Roundtrip: NASA’s Perseverance Rover Sample Tubes.
| Contamination-control figure | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 150 nanograms per tube | Upper limit for total Earth-based organic compounds in a sample tube | Not a measure of how likely life is on Mars |
| Less than 15 nanograms per tube | Stricter limit for a selected set of compounds regarded as especially indicative of life | Not proof that any Martian compound is biological |
Clean handling also has to continue after collection. If samples are eventually opened on Earth, laboratories must distinguish compounds native to Mars from introduced material and document every handling step. A suspected contaminant can complicate a result even when it is present in only a trace amount.
The leading current case: Cheyava Falls, nicknamed Sapphire Canyon
In a September 2025 update, NASA described peer-reviewed results from a Perseverance sample collected at Cheyava Falls—nicknamed Sapphire Canyon—as containing potential biosignatures. The sample’s chemistry and mineral features are scientifically important because they may be consistent with past biological activity, yet NASA says additional data and study are required before concluding whether life was present or absent.
That status matters. The finding is not reported as “life discovered on Mars.” It is a high-priority hypothesis that must be tested against non-biological explanations, the geological setting and the results of other instruments. NASA’s wording and the current description of the sample appear in The Mars Report: September 2025 — Special Edition.

Scientists can strengthen or weaken the case by determining how the relevant minerals formed, whether the features occur in a coherent spatial pattern, and whether independent measurements reproduce the same signal. A returned piece of the rock could also be divided among laboratories for tests that cannot be performed with the rover’s limited hardware.
Curiosity’s Mary Anning sample shows why complex chemistry remains ambiguous
NASA/JPL reported on April 21, 2026, that Curiosity’s Mary Anning sample contained the greatest diversity of organic molecules then found on Mars: 21 carbon-containing molecules, including seven reported there for the first time. The count demonstrates that Martian rocks can preserve a broad inventory of organic chemistry. It does not identify the source of those molecules.
| Finding reported by NASA/JPL | Scientific implication | Interpretive limit |
|---|---|---|
| 21 carbon-containing molecules in the Mary Anning sample | Evidence of unusually diverse organic chemistry in that sample | The molecules could have biological or geological origins |
| Seven molecules reported for the first time on Mars | Expands the known inventory of Martian organics | “First seen on Mars” does not mean “made by life” |
The report says scientists could not determine whether the molecules were produced biologically or geologically. The findings and their date are documented in NASA’s Curiosity Finds Organic Molecules Never Seen Before on Mars. This is a useful example of the difference between detecting a compound and establishing its origin.

No single observation carries the entire argument. A practical assessment asks five linked questions:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- What was directly measured? Separate an instrument’s observation—such as a spectrum, mineral identification or molecular signal—from an interpretation inferred from it.
- What non-biological processes could make it? Carbon compounds, textures and mineral patterns can arise through geology or from material delivered to Mars. Each plausible alternative must be described and tested rather than dismissed because a feature looks unusual.
- Was the setting potentially habitable? Evidence for ancient water, chemical energy and suitable ingredients makes a biological explanation more plausible, but it remains a condition for life rather than evidence that life occurred.
- Could the environment preserve the signal? Mineral hosts, burial, water alteration and exposure history determine whether an apparent trace could survive and whether later chemistry might have changed it.
- Do independent measurements converge? Agreement among chemical, mineralogical, textural and geological observations is stronger than a single instrument reading. Repeated analyses that produce the same result while accounting for contamination provide an additional check.
These questions reflect NASA’s emphasis on organic origins, environmental context and preservation. They also explain why scientists may spend years evaluating one sample: each alternative explanation has to be tested against the complete set of observations.

What returned samples could add
Earth laboratories can use larger, more sensitive and more varied instruments than a rover can carry. Researchers could examine a sample’s chemistry at finer scales, map organic compounds against individual minerals, test isotopic and molecular patterns, and distribute portions to independent teams. Such work could reveal whether a candidate feature is widespread through a layer or confined to an artifact of sampling.
Laboratory access would not automatically turn an ambiguous signal into proof. The same standards would still apply: contamination must be tracked, abiotic mechanisms must be tested and results must fit the rock’s geological history. NASA explains why detailed analysis of Perseverance material could investigate organic molecules and chemical or textural signs of life in Mars 2020: Perseverance Rover. Protection from Earth-derived compounds remains essential because a contaminant could resemble the trace chemistry under investigation.
What would make a conclusion stronger?
A convincing claim about ancient Martian life would need more than “an organic molecule was found.” The evidence would need to show that the feature is genuinely Martian, occurs in a geological setting compatible with its proposed history, survives detailed chemical and mineralogical testing, and cannot be explained by known non-living processes. Independent measurements would need to agree, ideally across multiple samples or locations, while contamination and sampling bias were demonstrably controlled.

This is a demanding standard because ancient traces may be altered and because Mars offers no modern ecosystem that can be observed directly. The aim is not absolute philosophical certainty; it is a reproducible, testable explanation that is substantially better supported than its alternatives. Until that point, terms such as “potential biosignature,” “candidate” and “consistent with” accurately communicate both the importance of a finding and the remaining uncertainty.
Why the question remains open
Mars has supplied several ingredients of a compelling investigation: evidence of ancient watery environments, preserved organic chemistry and rock features that merit biosignature analysis. It has not yet supplied a result that independently demonstrates biology. Cheyava Falls/Sapphire Canyon remains a potential-biosignature case requiring further study, and Curiosity’s Mary Anning molecules remain chemically intriguing without a determined origin.
The difficulty is therefore cumulative. Scientists must distinguish habitability from habitation, biology from abiotic chemistry, preserved traces from later alteration, a representative sample from a biased one, and Martian material from Earth contamination. Each additional, independent line of evidence can narrow the possibilities; none should be promoted to a discovery of life before those tests are complete.
