There is no evidence in the latest company disclosures that Games Workshop’s core operation is contracting. For the 52 weeks ended 31 May 2026, core revenue, operating profit, group revenue, profit before tax and earnings per share all increased, with group revenue and profit before tax reaching reported records. The company’s 16 September 2026 update said trading to 30 August was in line with board expectations.
Those results do not, by themselves, explain a particular share-price decline. To answer “Why is Games Workshop’s share price falling?”, you must identify the exact dates, compare the move with earnings expectations and valuation, and separate the miniature business from more volatile licensing income. The framework below shows how to do that and how to assess the company’s longer-term prospects without treating management’s outlook as a guarantee.
Why is Games Workshop’s share price falling?
The immediate cause of a fall cannot be established from the available company announcements because no specific price period, percentage decline, valuation multiple or contemporaneous market comparison is identified. A share can decline while a company reports higher sales and profits when investors had expected even faster growth, when the valuation multiple contracts, or when money rotates away from the sector. Those are analytical possibilities, not proven explanations for a particular Games Workshop move.

For this company, the most important distinction is between the underlying Warhammer miniature operation and licensing. The core business grew strongly in the latest full year, while licensing revenue fell from an unusually high comparison. A market reaction could therefore reflect changing expectations about future growth or the value investors place on each profit stream rather than a collapse in customer demand. Establishing causation requires a dated price series and dated information about expectations.

What is confirmed and what remains unproven
- Confirmed: Games Workshop reported record group revenue and profit before tax for the 52 weeks ended 31 May 2026, announced on 28 July 2026.
- Confirmed: Core revenue and core operating profit increased, while licensing revenue and licensing operating profit decreased.
- Confirmed: On 16 September 2026, the company said trading to 30 August was in line with board expectations and announced a 70p-per-share dividend.
- Not established: Whether a particular fall was caused by licensing, valuation, market conditions, investor profit-taking, or a change in earnings expectations.
Chief executive Kevin Rountree described the business in the 28 July 2026 results announcement as being in “great shape” and said record group revenue and profit before tax reflected “another good performance from the core business.” These are management statements, not independent forecasts.
What the latest full-year numbers show
The latest complete period is the 52 weeks ended 31 May 2026. The figures below come from Games Workshop Group PLC’s results announcement and annual report, both dated 28 July 2026. All amounts are in pounds sterling unless stated otherwise.
| Measure | FY2025/26 | FY2024/25 | Change or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group revenue | £659.7 million | Not stated in the cited results summary | Reported by the company as a record level; includes licensing |
| Core revenue | £626.8 million | £565.0 million | Increase of £61.8 million, about 10.9% |
| Licensing revenue | £32.9 million | £52.5 million | Decline of £19.6 million after an unusually strong prior-year release |
| Profit before tax | £275.7 million | £262.8 million | Reported by the company as a record level |
| Earnings per share | 624.0p | 594.9p | Higher statutory earnings per share |
| Core operating profit | £245.1 million | £211.8 million | Increase of £33.3 million |
| Net increase in cash before dividends paid | £210.3 million | £197.5 million | Cash generation before dividends was higher |
| Dividends declared and paid per share | 485p | 520p | Lower than the preceding year; the policy is variable rather than progressive |
The headline is therefore mixed only in composition: the core miniature operation expanded, while licensing normalised from a very high base. Group revenue still reached £659.7 million because core sales more than offset the licensing reduction. A falling share price alongside these numbers would be a valuation or expectations question until dated market evidence shows otherwise.
How a stock can fall when earnings rise
Expectations can matter more than the reported year
Share prices incorporate what investors expect before results arrive. If the market had priced in exceptional growth, a result that is objectively strong can still disappoint relative to that expectation. The relevant comparison is not simply “profit up or down”; it is actual revenue, profit, cash and guidance versus the consensus or assumptions embedded in the price at the start of the period.
The valuation multiple can contract
Price-to-earnings is a useful starting point, provided you specify whether earnings are statutory, trailing or forecast and use the same accounting basis at both dates. If the multiple falls faster than earnings rise, the share price can decline. Higher interest rates, a weaker appetite for consumer-discretionary shares or a general de-rating of growth companies can all affect the multiple without changing the latest annual profit.
A high licensing comparison can reset growth assumptions
Licensing revenue fell to £32.9 million from £52.5 million. The annual report says the prior year included a “surprise but very positive product release.” Licensing outcomes also depend on partners developing and delivering projects. Investors who had treated that earlier licensing contribution as a recurring run rate may reduce their growth assumptions when the comparison normalises.

Dividend timing can distort short-term price charts
A share price typically adjusts when a stock trades without entitlement to a dividend. Games Workshop’s distributions are not a fixed progressive schedule, so the date and size of each payment can affect a short-term price move. A price-only chart should not be confused with total shareholder return, which includes dividends.

Compare the same dates with a broad UK equity index and a relevant consumer-discretionary benchmark. If both fell similarly, market or sector exposure may explain part of the move. If Games Workshop underperformed materially, company-specific news or valuation may deserve closer attention. Without those dated comparisons, attributing the decline to one cause is speculation.
How to investigate a specific Games Workshop share-price decline
Use this process before writing that the shares fell “because” of a particular event.
- Define the interval. Record the exact start and end dates, whether the measurement uses closing prices, and the percentage change. Note any ex-dividend dates inside the interval.
- Build an event timeline. Place results, trading updates, dividend declarations, licensing announcements, production news and major market events on the same calendar. The 28 July 2026 full-year results and 16 September 2026 trading update are separate information points.
- Separate reported segments. Compare core revenue and core operating profit with licensing revenue and licensing operating profit. A decline in total revenue expectations can arise from licensing even while the core business grows.
- Compare actuals with expectations. Obtain a dated consensus or documented market forecast for sales, profit, earnings per share and dividends. Do not use a later estimate to explain an earlier price move.
- Measure valuation at both dates. Calculate a clearly defined price-to-earnings ratio, and if useful compare enterprise value with operating profit. State the share price, earnings period and whether the earnings figure is statutory or forecast.
- Check total return. Adjust for dividends when judging investor return. Games Workshop’s annual-report shareholder-value chart uses year-end share price plus dividend per share declared during the year; that is not the same as price-only performance.
- Benchmark the market. Compare the stock with broad UK equities and consumer-discretionary shares over identical dates. Document whether the relative move is company-specific or part of a wider sell-off.
- Write the conclusion with evidence levels. Label a documented announcement as a fact, a result-versus-consensus gap as an observed explanation, and any unverified motive as a possibility rather than a finding.
Core demand: the main long-term growth question
Games Workshop says it designed, made and sold record quantities of miniatures in FY2025/26. It reported constant-currency sales growth through its three sales channels and in established countries, and said its export team grew sales to 46 countries. These are company-reported measures, but they point to the central long-term indicator: whether customers continue to buy and engage with the Warhammer hobby.
What to monitor in future reports
- Reported core sales growth in sterling and constant currency, with the accounting definition clearly identified.
- Miniature volumes, customer acquisition and repeat engagement where the company provides those measures.
- Performance by channel and geography, rather than relying only on group totals.
- Store productivity and profitability. The annual report says not all stores met management’s satisfaction, although all but a few were profitable.
- Export growth and whether expansion into additional countries produces sustainable demand rather than one-off openings.
Core growth is more informative than a single strong licensing release because it reflects the recurring physical-product and hobby ecosystem. It is still not risk-free: demand can vary by release schedule, household budgets, exchange rates and the company’s ability to keep popular products available.
Capacity, availability and execution
Factory 4
The company says it is building Factory 4 in the United Kingdom to increase production capacity. Additional capacity could allow Games Workshop to manufacture more miniatures and reduce constraints on product availability. The announcement is a plan, not proof of the eventual return on investment, timing certainty or margin outcome.

Sawley logistics facility
Games Workshop expects a new Sawley logistics facility to be operational in summer 2027. A larger or more efficient logistics operation may support channel expansion, but construction, commissioning, staffing and throughput remain execution tasks. Investors should track capital spending, opening dates, warehouse performance and any changes to inventory or delivery commentary.
Operational bottlenecks
The annual report discusses stock forecasting, manufacturing and warehouse throughput, staffing and the need to improve certain store results. Capacity investment only creates value if products are forecast accurately, made economically, shipped reliably and sold at profitable prices. A delay can defer revenue; excess inventory can tie up cash; shortages can frustrate customers and push demand into later periods.
Margins, costs and reinvestment
Core operating profit increased from £211.8 million to £245.1 million. At the same time, core operating expenses rose to 29.2% of core sales from 28.4%. Operating expenses grew 13.8%, faster than core sales growth of 10.9%, as the company invested in facilities, information technology, jobs and expansion.
Recommended Free Tools
This combination is not automatically negative. Spending ahead of growth can strengthen production, systems and distribution. The test is whether future sales growth converts into profit after those investments. Track core operating profit, expense growth, capital expenditure, inventory and cash generation together. A business that grows revenue but continually loses operating leverage may deserve a lower valuation than one that converts growth efficiently.
Licensing: useful upside, unreliable baseline
Licensing operating profit fell to £29.9 million from £49.5 million in FY2025/26. The annual report describes the licensing industry backdrop as challenging and says outcomes depend broadly on licensees’ ability to develop and deliver projects. That makes licensing less predictable than the core miniature business.
The £52.5 million licensing revenue recorded in FY2024/25 included a surprise, very positive product release. Treating that number as a normal annual run rate would overstate sustainable earnings. A sound model should use explicit scenarios for project timing and partner execution, rather than extrapolating the strongest year indefinitely. Licensing can provide material upside when a project succeeds, but a delayed or unsuccessful partner release can create a sharp year-on-year comparison.

Cash, dividends and capital allocation
Cash position and policy
The company reported a £210.3 million net increase in cash before dividends paid in FY2025/26, compared with £197.5 million in the preceding year. The annual report describes Games Workshop as debt-free. Before treating cash as surplus, management says it reserves a three-month working-capital buffer of £120 million, planned investment and certain staff payments.
That framework means cash on the balance sheet is not all immediately distributable. Factory 4, the Sawley facility, technology, staffing and inventory requirements may absorb cash before a distribution is declared.
Why the dividend is variable
Dividends declared and paid were 485p per share in FY2025/26, down from 520p in FY2024/25. On 16 September 2026, the company declared a 70p-per-share dividend, taking dividends announced so far in FY2026/27 to £3.00 per share. The company’s stated policy is to return cash it judges to be surplus after working capital and planned needs; it does not promise a progressive dividend.
Income investors should therefore model distributions as variable. A lower annual dividend does not necessarily signal a weakening core business, just as a high distribution in one year does not guarantee the next one. Check cash generation, investment commitments and the board’s surplus-cash assessment each period.
Risks disclosed by the company
The annual report identifies several exposures. They should be treated as risks to monitor, not as proof that any one caused a recent share-price fall.
- Foreign exchange: sales and costs in different currencies can change reported results when translated into sterling.
- Raw-material prices: fluctuations can pressure manufacturing costs. The company says it does not hedge raw-material price risk under its long-standing treasury policy.
- Staffing and capacity: recruiting, retaining and deploying people can constrain factories, stores, technology projects and logistics.
- Inventory and logistics: inaccurate forecasts, warehouse bottlenecks or transport disruption can create shortages, delays or excess stock.
- Tariffs: changes in trade costs can affect imported materials, products and margins depending on the route and jurisdiction.
- Licensing partners: receipts depend on external partners developing and delivering projects on time and to commercial standards.
- Store execution: uneven store performance can dilute returns from the retail estate even when the group remains profitable overall.
Assessing the long-term prospects with three scenarios
The following are analytical frameworks, not company forecasts. The deciding variables are core demand, profit conversion, licensing outcomes, capacity delivery, cash after investment and the valuation investors assign to realistic earnings growth.

| Scenario | Operating assumptions to test | Likely valuation question |
|---|---|---|
| Bull | Core sales remain healthy; Factory 4 and Sawley open effectively; operating costs grow more slowly than sales; licensing adds successful projects; cash remains abundant after investment. | Would sustained growth and dependable cash justify a premium multiple, and is that growth already priced in? |
| Base | Core demand grows but moderates; investment keeps expenses elevated; licensing fluctuates around a lower, less predictable level; capacity projects arrive broadly as planned. | Does the current multiple allow for normalisation and execution risk rather than assuming exceptional growth? |
| Bear | Core growth slows materially; stores or channels underperform; factory or logistics projects are delayed; input, tariff or currency pressure reduces margins; licensing partners deliver fewer projects. | How far could earnings estimates and the valuation multiple fall together? |
Use explicit assumptions for each case. For example, model core sales separately from licensing, apply a margin range to core operating profit, include facility spending and working-capital needs, and set a dividend based on surplus cash rather than a fixed payout-growth rate. Present the resulting valuation as sensitivity to assumptions, not as a precise target price.
A practical checklist for the next results
- Is core revenue still growing, and is growth broad across channels and established countries?
- Are miniatures available when customers want them, or do stock and warehouse comments indicate constraints?
- Did core operating profit rise faster or slower than core sales after investment spending?
- What changed in operating expenses, capital expenditure, inventory and cash?
- Are Factory 4 and the Sawley logistics facility on schedule, and what capacity or cost benefits are quantified?
- Has management changed its description of store performance, export markets or customer engagement?
- What licensing projects are actually delivered, and how much revenue is being assumed from projects not yet released?
- How much cash remains after the £120 million working-capital buffer, planned investment and staff payments?
- What dividend has been declared, and is it supported by surplus cash rather than debt or a temporary release of working capital?
- How does the share’s valuation compare with the earnings growth that can reasonably be defended?
What would make the share-price explanation more reliable?
A credible post-move explanation should show the price chart, the relevant announcement date, the change in earnings expectations and the valuation at both ends of the period. It should also state whether the calculation is price-only or total return and show how comparable UK consumer shares performed.
If those data demonstrate that estimates fell after a licensing delay, that is stronger evidence than simply pointing to the licensing decline in the annual report. If estimates held up but the price-to-earnings ratio fell alongside the wider market, a valuation or macro explanation is more plausible. If neither occurred, the correct conclusion may be that the cause remains uncertain.

Bottom line for long-term investors
The latest evidence describes a growing core Games Workshop business, record group revenue and profit before tax, higher earnings per share and strong cash generation. It also shows a meaningful licensing decline, rising operating expenses during investment, variable dividends and execution risks around factories, logistics, stores, currencies, materials, tariffs and partners.
That mix can support a constructive long-term case, but it does not guarantee the shares will rise. The investment decision turns on whether future core growth, licensing income and cash returns justify the valuation after accounting for execution risk. A dated price-and-expectations analysis is essential before claiming why any particular fall occurred.
