If Wi-Fi is faster than Ethernet, the wired connection may be limited by a cable, router LAN port, Ethernet adapter, or computer setting. It can also be a misleading comparison if the two speed tests used different conditions. Check the connection in order—first make the tests comparable, then isolate the cable, port, network equipment, and computer.
First, make sure the speed comparison is fair
Test Ethernet and Wi-Fi on the same computer, using the same speed-test service and server if possible. Pause large downloads and cloud backups, and repeat each test more than once. A single result can reflect temporary network or test conditions rather than a problem with the Ethernet connection.
Wi-Fi performance can vary with the computer’s distance from the router, walls or other obstructions, nearby devices, and the computer’s available resources. Busy websites and other conditions outside your home network can also affect a speed test or a particular app. Ethernet avoids some wireless variables, but that does not guarantee every wired link is working properly.

Check the cable and router connection
- Reseat the cable. Unplug and reconnect the Ethernet cable at both ends, making sure it is firmly inserted.
- Check the router port. Connect the cable to a LAN Ethernet port on the router, not the Internet or WAN port, which is used to connect the router to the modem.
- Try another cable. If you have a known-good Ethernet cable, use it for a repeat test. Microsoft Support recommends trying a second cable when the first one does not work. If performance changes, the original cable or one of its terminations is a plausible cause; if it does not, continue checking other parts of the path.
- Try another LAN port. If the router has more than one LAN port, move the cable to another one and test again. A change in results is useful evidence, but changing ports by itself does not prove the router is faulty.
Replacing a cable is best treated as a diagnostic swap, not an automatic speed upgrade. If you do not have another cable, buying one is only useful if you can use it to test the connection; it is not a guaranteed fix.

Test another device and restart the network equipment
Connect another computer to the same router by Ethernet, if one is available. If it also has trouble, the issue may be with the router, ISP, or an Ethernet adapter involved in the connection. If Ethernet works normally on the second computer, focus on the original computer and its adapter or software.
Restarting the modem and router can establish a new connection to the ISP. It will temporarily disconnect people and devices using the network, so do it when that interruption is acceptable. If several wired devices still have problems after checking cables and ports and restarting the equipment, consult the ISP’s outage information or contact its support.

Check the computer’s Ethernet adapter
On Windows, start with the Network and Internet troubleshooter recommended in Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance. Check the Ethernet connection’s status in Settings, and consult the computer or adapter manufacturer’s instructions for driver details and how to view the reported link speed.
A reported link rate can help narrow down the problem, but it is a clue, not a diagnosis. The Microsoft guidance does not provide a complete low-link-speed diagnostic table. Avoid forcing a duplex setting as a general fix; the reviewed guidance does not recommend that as a standard troubleshooting step.

If the computer has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may provide a wired connection. Check that it matches an available USB or USB-C port and is supported by the computer’s operating system. Its supported speed, along with the computer and router capabilities, must be sufficient for the connection you want; an adapter can also be a point to investigate if it is already part of the wired path.
When the slowdown is limited to one app or website
If general speed tests are normal but one app or website feels slow, the problem may not be the Ethernet link. A busy site or another external network condition can affect one service without slowing every connection. Compare more than one service before treating a single slow page or app as proof of a wired-network fault.

What a useful diagnosis depends on
The title alone cannot identify the cause, and there is no established figure here for how often Ethernet is slower than Wi-Fi or by how much. A specific diagnosis depends on the operating system, computer and adapter model, router model, reported Ethernet link speed, test method, and whether the issue repeats with another device, cable, or port. Microsoft’s Ethernet guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; it also states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
