Canon’s claim to being the most popular camera brand has a specific scope: Canon says its digital interchangeable-lens cameras—DSLR and mirrorless models—held the largest global share for 23 consecutive years, from 2003 through 2025. That is a company-reported market-share claim, not a poll showing that Canon is everyone’s favorite brand.

What does “most popular” mean in Canon’s claim?

In a February 24, 2026 announcement, Canon Inc. said its digital interchangeable-lens cameras had the number-one global share in every year from 2003 through 2025. Canon defines the category as digital SLR and mirrorless cameras. The company says the result is based on a Canon survey; the announcement does not disclose a share percentage, a competitor-by-competitor breakdown, or the size of Canon’s lead. Canon’s announcement

That distinction matters: the claim is about a defined camera category and reported market share. It does not establish that Canon leads every camera category, every country, or every measure of consumer preference.

Why Canon has stayed competitive

A camera system buyers can build on

Canon presents EOS as a system that combines camera bodies, proprietary CMOS sensors, DIGIC image processors, and interchangeable lenses. Its stated design concept is “Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality.” A system spanning different kinds of bodies and lenses gives buyers more than a single model to choose from, and can offer a path from an initial camera to later equipment. That is a plausible explanation for the system’s staying power, not a measured finding about why individual buyers chose Canon.

  • ENHANCED SUBJECT ACQUISITION: In addition to people, small animals, cars and motorcycles, the R6 Mark II also easily detects horses, trains, and aircraft, with the option to automatically select the subject type without manually switching.
  • ADVANCED HEAD, FACE, EYE DETECTION: Automatically detects and focuses on a person's head, face, or eye—even the left or right eye—plus, effectively tracks the whole body, face, or eye of animals for fast, accurate image or video capture.

The lens ecosystem has developed over decades. Canon dates its EF lens system to 1987 and its RF system to 2018. In an October 2025 release, Canon U.S.A. reported cumulative production of 170 million RF and EF lenses. That is a production total, not a count of lenses sold to end users. Canon U.S.A.’s lens-production announcement

Canon’s lens counts also depend on date and counting method. Its February 2026 announcement cited 113 RF and EF lens types announced as of February 24, including four extenders, and noted that counts vary by market. The separate October 2025 release described 108 models. These are dated figures with different stated bases, not interchangeable measures of the number of lenses currently available to every buyer.

An early push into more accessible DSLRs

Canon says it released the Digital Rebel in September 2003; the same camera was called the EOS 300D or Kiss Digital in other regions. The company describes it as competitively priced and compact and lightweight, and says it “spurred growth in the digital SLR market.” This is Canon’s account of the camera’s impact, rather than an independently quantified explanation of its market position. The model nonetheless illustrates Canon’s early effort to make an interchangeable-lens DSLR available in a smaller, more accessible package.

Continuing investment in mirrorless cameras

Canon launched its EOS R mirrorless system in October 2018. Its February 2026 announcement points to a range of releases: the professional EOS R1, released in November 2024; the APS-C EOS R50 V, oriented toward video and released in May 2025; and the full-frame EOS R6 Mark III, released in November 2025. Canon also says it released seven RF lens models in 2025. These launches show continued development of the system, though product releases alone do not prove customer preference.

What a separate U.S. sales result tells you

Canon U.S.A. reported that the EOS R6 Mark II ranked as the top-selling full-frame camera in the United States for the 12 months ending December 2024, citing Circana LLC Retail Tracking Service. The announcement also included other U.S. category claims. This is a U.S.-specific retail-tracking result for a defined period; it is separate from Canon Inc.’s global, multi-year survey claim and should not be treated as independent confirmation of it. What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • It shows: Canon reports the leading global share in digital interchangeable-lens cameras for 2003–2025, using its own survey, and has a long-running DSLR and mirrorless system with a broad body and lens lineup.
  • It does not show: an independently verified global market-share percentage, Canon’s lead over the next-largest brand, or a measured cause for its market position.
  • For a buying decision: compare the specific camera bodies and lenses that fit your needs, including lens-mount compatibility, price, still-photo and video features, and local service options. A brand-level market-share claim cannot tell you which camera is right for you.
