The “Buzzin’ Dozen” is an informal nickname most closely associated with Detroit Diesel’s 12V-71, also written V12-71. “Dozen” refers to its 12 cylinders. “Buzzin’” is commonly understood as a reference to the engine’s distinctive sound or fast-running character.
That explanation is widely repeated, but it is not a documented Detroit Diesel naming statement. No reliable source identifies who first used the phrase or gives a proven first-use date, so the nickname should be treated as enthusiast slang rather than an official model name.
What the nickname means
The phrase combines a number with an impression of how the engine sounds or behaves. In ordinary usage, “dozen” is the straightforward part: the engine has 12 cylinders. “Buzzin’” is the expressive part, used by enthusiasts to evoke the audible character of a running Detroit Diesel V12 or its fast-running nature.
Diesel Pro Power’s March 19, 2025 guide gives this cylinder-count and sound/fast-running explanation while treating “Buzzin’ Dozen” as a slang name, not a factory designation. Its account is useful evidence of current specialist usage, but it is a supplier’s guide rather than a Detroit Diesel historical record: Diesel Pro Power’s guide to official and slang Detroit Diesel names.

“Dozen” is the literal clue
In the common designation 12V-71, the “12” identifies a twelve-cylinder engine. The “V” identifies the V-cylinder layout, and “71” places the model in Detroit Diesel’s 71 Series. The nickname turns the first part of the designation into an ordinary word: twelve becomes a dozen.
“Buzzin’” is an informal description
There is no verified acoustic measurement attached to the nickname. Enthusiasts use “buzzin’” as colorful language for the sound or character they associate with a running 12V-71. A user-contributed Urban Dictionary entry supplies one sound-based anecdote, but that entry is collaborative and anecdotal; it cannot establish a technical acoustic property or prove where the name originated: Urban Dictionary’s “Buzzin Dozen” entry.
For that reason, “buzzin’” should be presented as a commonly repeated interpretation, not as a claim that Detroit Diesel measured the engine and assigned the nickname because of a particular frequency, decibel level, or operating speed.
Which Detroit Diesel engine is the “Buzzin’ Dozen”?
The clearest specific association is the Detroit Diesel 12V-71, often written V12-71. Both forms refer readers to the same model family, while “Buzzin’ Dozen” is the informal label.

| Term | What it identifies | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 12V-71 | Detroit Diesel model designation for a 12-cylinder V engine in the 71 Series | Use this form for parts, service literature, and precise identification |
| V12-71 | Reversed wording of the same model association | Useful when searching specialist discussions and reference material |
| “Buzzin’ Dozen” | Informal enthusiast nickname | Use it conversationally; do not substitute it for the model number on a technical order |
Informal speech can be looser than a data plate. Some enthusiasts may apply the phrase broadly to a Detroit Diesel V12, but the strongest model-specific evidence connects it to the 12V-71. If an engine, listing, or conversation does not identify the 71 Series, confirm the designation before assuming that “Buzzin’ Dozen” means a particular configuration.
Is “Buzzin’ Dozen” an official Detroit Diesel name?
No official Detroit Diesel announcement, naming document, or statement from a company representative has been identified that explains the nickname. The phrase appears in enthusiast and specialist contexts, while Detroit Diesel’s formal identification remains 12V-71 or V12-71.
This distinction matters when you are ordering parts, checking a rebuild specification, or searching a service manual. A supplier may understand “Buzzin’ Dozen,” but a model designation is the dependable identifier for technical work. Put the exact designation from the engine’s plate or documentation on an order, then add the nickname only as a search aid if useful.
What is known about the phrase’s history?
The available references show usage and a recurring interpretation, not a complete etymology. They do not name a first speaker, identify a factory employee who coined the term, or establish a single year when the nickname began.

| Reference | Date or status | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel Pro Power specialist guide | March 19, 2025 | Current specialist explanation linking “Buzzin’ Dozen” to the V12-71, its 12 cylinders, and its sound or fast-running character | It does not document an official Detroit Diesel coinage or identify the first user |
| Steam Community discussion about a DD 12V-71 | November 8, 2019 | Shows the expression was in enthusiast use by that date and points readers toward a 12V71 brochure | A forum post cannot establish when the nickname started |
| Urban Dictionary entry | Undated user contribution | Illustrates a sound-based anecdotal explanation used by enthusiasts | It is not reliable evidence of engineering acoustics or historical origin |
| Published 2026 overview | October 7, 2026 | Records the same uncertainty: a common interpretation without a documented originator or first-use date | It does not turn the interpretation into an official company etymology |
The 2019 discussion is useful because it places the expression in public enthusiast conversation before the 2025 specialist guide. It still cannot answer the historical question of who said it first. The discussion also links to a 12V71 brochure, which is useful for model-specific technical literature but does not explain the slang: Steam Community discussion mentioning the DD 12V-71.
Why the sound explanation should be stated cautiously
Nicknames often preserve an owner’s impression rather than a laboratory definition. A person hearing a running V12-71 may describe it as “buzzing,” and that description can spread through truck, marine, industrial, or restoration communities. Over time, the phrase can become familiar without leaving a written record of its first use.
That is different from proving that every 12V-71 produces the same sound. Installation, exhaust arrangement, accessories, load, maintenance condition, and recording position can change what an observer hears. The references supplied for this question contain no controlled sound comparison, frequency analysis, or universal acoustic specification. The safe wording is therefore “commonly explained as a reference to its sound or fast-running character.”

- Read the identification plate or stamped designation. Record every character, including hyphens, suffixes, and naturally aspirated or other configuration marks if shown.
- Check that the designation contains 12V-71 or V12-71. The nickname’s strongest documented association is with this model family, not with every Detroit Diesel engine that happens to have twelve cylinders.
- Match the designation to model-specific literature. The 12V71 brochure linked in the 2019 discussion is an example of the kind of technical document to consult, but verify that its coverage matches your exact engine: Detroit Diesel 12V71 brochure.
- Use the formal model in parts and service searches. Search for “Detroit Diesel 12V-71” or “V12-71” first. Add “Buzzin’ Dozen” only when looking for owner discussions, stories, or informal terminology.
- Keep configuration details with the model number. Two engines carrying the 12V-71 family designation can require different documentation if their application or configuration differs. Do not assume that a rating or component from one document applies to another engine without checking coverage.
What the nickname does not tell you about specifications
“Buzzin’ Dozen” communicates cylinder count and an enthusiast impression; it does not provide a horsepower, torque, displacement, governed-speed, emissions, or application specification. Those values can vary by configuration, and the material available for this question does not establish one authoritative rating set for every 12V-71.
| Information | What can safely be said from the nickname evidence | What requires configuration-specific documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder count | Twelve cylinders | Nothing additional is implied by the nickname |
| Engine family | Most closely associated with Detroit Diesel’s V12-71 in the 71 Series | Exact suffix, application, and build configuration |
| Sound or operating character | “Buzzin’” is a commonly repeated informal description | Measured sound levels, frequencies, or a universal operating-speed claim |
| Performance ratings | Not established by the nickname | Horsepower, torque, displacement, governed speed, and other ratings from an applicable primary document |
Do not copy a horsepower or RPM figure from a generic 12V-71 reference and present it as universal. A brochure or service document may describe one particular configuration, and its scope has to be checked before the number is applied to another engine.

“Detroit Diesel named it the Buzzin’ Dozen.”
There is no documented manufacturer statement in the available references supporting that claim. The evidence supports an informal nickname used by specialists and enthusiasts.
“The phrase identifies every Detroit Diesel V12.”
The clearest specific association is the 12V-71. Broader informal use may occur, but it should not replace checking the actual model designation.

“Buzzin’ proves a fixed technical sound.”
The sound explanation is an interpretation and anecdote, not a published acoustic specification. Engine installation and operating conditions can affect what people hear.
“The nickname tells me which parts or ratings to buy.”
It does not. Parts compatibility and ratings depend on the formal designation and configuration. Use the identification plate and model-specific literature.
How to discuss the name without overstating it
For a concise, accurate explanation, say: “The Detroit Diesel 12V-71 is often called the ‘Buzzin’ Dozen’ because it has twelve cylinders and enthusiasts associate its running character with a buzz. It is an informal nickname, and its first use has not been documented.”
That wording preserves what the phrase communicates while separating established identification from interpretation. It avoids attributing the name to Detroit Diesel, inventing a coinage date, or turning an anecdote into an engineering claim.
Bottom line
“Buzzin’ Dozen” is best understood as enthusiast slang for the Detroit Diesel 12V-71/V12-71: “dozen” points to its 12 cylinders, while “buzzin’” evokes its sound or fast-running character. Use 12V-71 or V12-71 when the identification must be precise, and treat any story about who coined the nickname or exactly when it began as unverified.
