On an iPhone, blue bubbles mean the message was sent with iMessage. Green bubbles mean it was sent with RCS or SMS/MMS. Green does not automatically mean SMS, nor does it prove the recipient uses Android: the color identifies the messaging service used for that message.
What blue and green bubbles mean
| Bubble color | Service | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | iMessage | Apple’s messaging service sends messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data to another Apple device. Apple lists features such as high-resolution photos and videos, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. Apple says iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted. Apple Support |
| Green | RCS | Apple Messages uses green for RCS as well as SMS/MMS. RCS can support text, high-resolution media and links, along with delivery and read receipts and typing indicators. On iPhone, it requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan from a provider that supports RCS on iPhone; availability varies by carrier and region. Apple Support |
| Green | SMS/MMS | Messages uses SMS/MMS when iMessage or RCS is not being used. These carrier services require an appropriate text-messaging plan. Apple Support |
So the useful distinction is among iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS—not simply blue versus green. Two green conversations can use different services and have different features.

Why an iPhone message might turn green
A green bubble means that particular message went through RCS or SMS/MMS rather than iMessage. Apple lists several possible reasons an expected iMessage appears green:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The recipient does not have an Apple device.
- iMessage is turned off on your device or the recipient’s.
- iMessage is temporarily unavailable on either device.
- Messages settings need an update after a new device was set up.
The bubble alone cannot tell you which reason applies. It also does not, by itself, confirm that the recipient switched phones or that anything is wrong with the conversation. Apple Support: If your iPhone messages are green

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How to check iMessage settings
- On your iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Check that iMessage is turned on.
- If the issue began after setting up a new device, open Send & Receive and check that the phone number or email address you want to use to start conversations is selected.
If the recipient has iMessage disabled or the service is temporarily unavailable, changing your own setting may not make that message blue.
What RCS adds to green conversations
RCS is a richer messaging standard than SMS/MMS, but the exact features available vary by device, carrier, region, and setup. For Android–iPhone RCS chats, Google lists typing indicators, read receipts in one-to-one chats, group-chat management, and high-resolution photo and video sharing. Google: Get The Message

On iPhone, RCS support depends on iOS 18 or later and a provider that supports RCS on iPhone. Availability is not universal, so a green bubble does not guarantee that every RCS feature is available in a given conversation. Apple Support and Google Messages Help
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes bubble color tell you whether messages are encrypted?
No. Blue identifies iMessage, which Apple says is end-to-end encrypted. Green may identify RCS or SMS/MMS, and those services do not all have the same encryption status. Google’s RCS FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users in the implementation it describes do not have end-to-end encryption. Apple says end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in Messages is in beta starting with iOS 26.5 for supported providers, with rollout over time. Apple also says protection depends on all participants’ providers supporting it; when protected, the conversation displays an “Encrypted” label with a lock. Google Messages Help and Apple Support

- Confirm that your iPhone is running iOS 18 or later for iPhone RCS support.
- Check whether your carrier and region support RCS on iPhone and whether your text-messaging plan qualifies.
- For a specific feature or encryption question, check the conversation’s current status and the support information for the devices and providers involved.
