Blockchain technology may make some financial assets easier to issue, service, transfer and use as collateral. Those possibilities—not a promise of investment returns—are the strongest case for paying attention to it. Adoption is still early, benefits are not assured, and legal, liquidity and operational risks can outweigh efficiency gains.
What does investing in blockchain technology mean?
Blockchain is often discussed as if it were one investment, but the term covers technology and different ways of using it. One important use is tokenization: recording or transferring a digital representation of an asset on a shared, programmable ledger. The asset might exist on that ledger, or it might be held off-ledger by an intermediary. The rights and risks depend on the specific arrangement.
That distinction matters. A token representing a financial security is not automatically the same as direct ownership of the underlying asset, and interest in blockchain technology does not establish that any particular token, company or security is a sound investment. The reasons below describe possible changes to financial markets, not a recommendation to buy a specific asset.

Issuing, servicing and redeeming a financial asset can involve multiple parties, records and handoffs. A shared ledger with programmable rules could streamline some of those processes and reduce the need for certain intermediaries. The IMF has also identified the potential for lower trading costs through reduced search frictions and, in some cases, less counterparty risk.

- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
These are possible efficiencies, not proof that a particular system will be cheaper or that its users will pass any savings on to investors. A ledger still needs reliable governance, operating procedures and connections to the legal and financial systems around it.
2. Could settlement and collateral use become faster?
Tokenization may allow assets to settle more quickly and become available for use as collateral sooner. The IMF’s 2024 financial stability report described potential benefits including near-immediate settlement, lower ownership costs, fractional use of safe and liquid collateral, and more timely receipt of yields or coupons.
Those are expected benefits, not universal results already achieved across markets. Faster settlement may also leave less time to resolve a problem or meet a payment obligation. Whether speed helps depends on the asset, settlement arrangements and safeguards in place.

3. Could tokenization create new ways to represent and transfer financial assets?
A token can represent a financial instrument on or through a crypto network, potentially giving market participants new ways to issue, transfer or use that instrument. SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce has identified possible benefits for capital formation and the use of assets as collateral.
But the token’s legal structure determines what its holder actually owns or can claim. In a July 2025 statement, Peirce emphasized that a tokenized security remains a security under U.S. securities-law analysis. Where an unaffiliated third party holds the underlying asset, the token holder may face that party’s performance and custody risks; the token may not provide the same legal or beneficial ownership as holding the security directly.
4. Could fractional ownership broaden access?
Tokenization may make it possible to divide an asset or a claim on it into smaller units. In principle, smaller units could lower the amount needed to obtain exposure to an asset and widen participation. The Bank for International Settlements has described broader investor access through fractionalization as a potential benefit.

- EAL5+ CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT + FINGERPRINT PROTECTION — Your private keys stay encrypted offline on a certified EAL5+ chip, the same security tier used in EMV bank cards. Built by DCENT, securing crypto since 2018. Fingerprint authentication adds a second layer no PIN-only wallet can match.
- 10,000+ ASSETS NATIVE ON 100+ BLOCKCHAINS — Hold Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, Cardano, popular stablecoins (USDT, USDC), and NFTs in one wallet. No third-party apps, no fragmented setup — every supported asset works straight out of the box.
- TAP-TO-SIGN MOBILE EXPERIENCE — Pair your wallet with the DCENT mobile app over Bluetooth. Manage tokens, review transactions, and access in-app swap features directly from your phone — no cables, no desktop required.
- WEB3 & dAPP ACCESS VIA METAMASK — Connect to MetaMask and other browser extension wallets to manage NFTs, claim airdrops, and access dApps. A large screen and intuitive 4-button interface keep every transaction clearly visible before you sign.
- SEAMLESS FIRMWARE UPDATES & 30-DAY MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE — Apply security updates without resetting your wallet or migrating funds. Backed by Amazon's 30-day money-back guarantee — your purchase is risk-free.
Dividing an asset into smaller units does not by itself ensure that those units can be sold readily, that investors receive the same protections, or that the asset becomes available in every jurisdiction. Fractionalization is a possible change in access, not a guarantee of liquidity or suitability.

5. Is a new financial infrastructure emerging?
Tokenization is moving toward commercial deployment, but it remains nascent, according to the IMF’s 2026 overview of digital finance. That makes the area worth watching for investors interested in how financial infrastructure could change, while also making adoption and implementation uncertain.
The scale is still limited in at least one clearly measured segment. In a July 2025 bulletin, the BIS described tokenized government bonds as early-stage and reported $8 billion in issuance to date. That figure is a dated snapshot of tokenized bonds, not a current total or a measure of the whole blockchain sector. The same bulletin reported lower bid-ask spreads than for conventional bonds and comparable issuance costs, while noting that regulation and infrastructure remain challenges.

What risks could offset these potential benefits?
Efficiency gains do not remove market risk; some features of tokenized markets may create or amplify it. The BIS and IMF have highlighted several concerns:
- Unproven benefits and trade-offs: The BIS has cautioned that many anticipated gains remain unproven. A change that reduces one friction may create another.
- Liquidity and stability: Liquidity mismatches, lower liquidity buffers and greater leverage could make stress harder to manage. Faster settlement may reduce time buffers and allow problems to spread quickly through interconnected institutions.
- Code and contract failures: Smart-contract programs and linked contingent contracts may contain vulnerabilities or fail to behave as intended.
- Concentrated infrastructure and fragmented markets: Network effects could concentrate critical market infrastructure even as competition among brokers grows. Incompatible ledgers could also split activity into separate systems that do not work smoothly together.
- Legal and counterparty exposure: A holder’s rights can depend on the token’s structure and on whether an issuer or intermediary controls the underlying asset.
These are risks identified in discussions of tokenization; they are not a claim that every project has all of them. They do show why a technology’s potential efficiency should not be treated as evidence of an investor’s likely return.

How should you assess a blockchain-related investment?
Start with the rights and arrangements behind the investment rather than its blockchain label. For a tokenized asset, useful questions include:
- What does the token entitle its holder to? Establish whether it represents direct ownership, a beneficial claim, a contractual right or something else.
- Who holds or controls the underlying asset? Identify whether that party is the issuer or an unaffiliated intermediary, and what happens if it fails to perform.
- Which laws and rules apply? Consider the asset, issuer, intermediary and investor’s jurisdiction; a digital format does not by itself determine legal treatment.
- How do settlement and liquidity work? Look at the settlement asset, redemption process and arrangements for buying or selling, rather than assuming faster transfer means a deep market.
- Who governs the system and its code? Consider how software changes are controlled, what safeguards exist and how errors or outages are handled.
- Does the system connect to other markets? Interoperability can affect whether assets and activity can move beyond one ledger.
- Are claimed improvements demonstrated? Look for evidence that costs, settlement times or other outcomes have improved in the relevant market, not just a description of what the technology could do.
These checks can help clarify what an investment actually represents and which assumptions its case depends on. They cannot establish that it is appropriate for a particular person or predict its future performance.
