An international transfer can be paused while the provider verifies payer and payee details, your identity, the purpose and expected nature of the payment, the source of funds, or a higher-risk pattern. A hold is not proof that you did anything wrong, and there is no universal release time. Contact the sending provider through an independently verified official channel, ask exactly what is outstanding and how to submit it securely, then respond with accurate, relevant information.

Why is my international transfer being held for compliance checks?

Providers that handle cross-border payments have legal and risk-management duties to identify customers, keep transfer information traceable and investigate transactions that need more information. The precise trigger depends on the provider, the countries and currencies involved, the payment method, the customer relationship and the rules that apply to that route. Only the provider handling your payment can explain the basis of your particular hold.

Possible review focus Information the provider may check What the hold does not establish
Complete, traceable transfer data Payer and payee names, addresses, account numbers or other traceable identifiers That the payment is fraudulent or unlawful
Customer due diligence Identity, account activity, the purpose or expected nature of the relationship, and the origin of funds The reason your individual payment was selected
Enhanced due diligence Additional identity evidence, transaction history, ownership, financial situation and consistency with the stated purpose when risk is assessed as higher That you are suspected of a crime
Operational or data issue Conflicting names, an incorrect account identifier, missing fields or a payment that needs correction or return That sending a second payment will solve the first one

Incomplete or untraceable payer and payee information

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) guidance titled “Information you must send with a transfer of funds to prevent money laundering” describes information that must accompany covered UK transfers. It names the payer’s name, full postal address and account number or another traceable identifier, along with the payee’s name and account number or identifier. A provider may stop processing when a required field is missing, inconsistent or cannot be checked.

That HMRC page, published on 25 February 2014 and last updated on 14 September 2017, gives examples of when independent verification can be required under the UK rules described there. Examples include a transfer of €1,000 or more, cash or anonymous electronic-money funding, linked transactions that reach the relevant threshold, and regular transfers or an established business relationship. These are UK regulatory examples for the scope of that guidance, not a worldwide consumer threshold. A different country, provider or payment channel may apply a different rule.

Identity and customer due diligence

HMRC’s “Your responsibilities under money laundering supervision” explains customer due diligence for businesses covered by the UK Money Laundering Regulations. Depending on the business and relationship, checks can cover who the customer is, what activity is expected, the purpose or expected nature of the relationship and the source or origin of funds. A transfer can therefore remain pending while the provider confirms information that was not needed for an earlier payment or that has changed since the account was opened.

The same UK guidance discusses occasional-transaction thresholds of €15,000 for most covered businesses and €10,000 for high-value dealers or art-market participants, including rules about linked transactions. Those figures describe regulated-business obligations in that jurisdiction; they are not a universal amount at which every international transfer is automatically held.

Higher-risk or unusual activity

When a provider assesses greater risk, enhanced due diligence can require closer examination. HMRC’s “AMLG11600 – Enhanced due diligence (EDD),” published 8 July 2026 and updated 16 July 2026, describes measures for relevant UK regulated businesses. They can include additional identity checks and scrutiny of transaction history, ownership, financial circumstances, the stated purpose and whether the payment is consistent with the relationship and previous activity.

Risk indicators can be routine rather than accusatory. A new beneficiary, a sudden change in amount or destination, an unusual funding method, inconsistent personal details or a payment involving several linked transactions may simply require clarification. The cited guidance does not identify the reason for any one customer’s hold, provide a standard document list or set a fixed review period.

What to do now: a safe step-by-step response

  1. Verify the contact channel. Open the provider’s official app or type its web address yourself, or use a telephone number from an account statement or other official material. Do not rely on an unsolicited email, text message or social-media message that asks for documents.
  2. Confirm the current status. Ask whether the payment is waiting for information, undergoing a compliance review, returned, rejected or subject to a technical correction. Ask for the transfer or case reference.
  3. Ask what is actually missing. Request the exact information or documents required, the secure upload or in-app submission method, any deadline and the date of the next update. If staff cannot disclose sensitive review details, ask what procedural information they can provide.
  4. Check every field before replying. Compare the payer and payee names, addresses, account or wallet identifiers, amount, currency and stated purpose with your records. Correct discrepancies through the provider rather than improvising a new explanation.
  5. Submit only genuine, relevant evidence. If the provider asks about the source of funds, provide records that accurately support the answer, such as the document type the provider specifies. Do not alter, crop misleadingly or combine documents to make them appear to prove something they do not.
  6. Keep an audit trail. Save the receipt, case reference, messages, upload confirmations, dates and copies of what you sent. Record the name or identification of a support representative when available.
  7. Stop and reassess before sending another payment. A duplicate transfer can create a second pending transaction and make reconciliation harder. Ask whether the original can be corrected, cancelled or returned and wait for a clear status.

What documents might clear an international-transfer hold?

There is no universal checklist. The provider should tell you which evidence is relevant to its question and route. The categories below are examples of information a provider may request, not a promise that every item will be accepted or needed.

Question being checked Examples of information that may be requested How to prepare
Who is sending and receiving? Government-issued identity details, legal name, address and account or other traceable identifier Make spelling and address formatting consistent with the account and transfer record.
Where did the money come from? Evidence relevant to the stated source or origin of funds, as specified by the provider Send authentic records covering the amount and period in question; redact unrelated data only when the provider permits it.
Why is the payment being made? A description of the purpose, expected relationship or commercial activity Use a precise, truthful explanation that matches invoices, contracts or other supporting records when requested.
Who controls an account or business? Ownership, control or financial-situation information for a business or higher-risk relationship Ask which persons or entities must be identified before sending anything.
Does the activity fit the account? Transaction history, prior relationship details or an explanation of an unusual amount, destination or frequency Explain a genuine change instead of trying to make the payment resemble an earlier one.

Uploading a passport, bank statement or source-of-funds record does not automatically release a payment. A provider may need to review the material, request clarification or decide that the payment must be returned under its procedures or the applicable law.

How long can a compliance hold last?

No source establishes a universal number of hours or days. Timing can vary with the provider’s queue, the completeness of your response, the payment method, intermediary institutions, the countries involved, sanctions or other legal controls, weekends and holidays, and whether another institution must answer a request. Ask for the next update date rather than relying on a promised release time.

Use the provider’s status language carefully. “Waiting for information” usually calls for a response from you; “under review” may mean the provider is assessing information already supplied; “returned” or “rejected” means the original payment is not proceeding and may require a separate refund or correction process. If the status is unclear, ask what action, if any, is currently required from you.

What if the transfer details are wrong?

Tell the sending provider immediately if a name, address, account number, beneficiary identifier, amount or purpose was entered incorrectly. Ask whether it can amend the instruction, cancel it or arrange a return. Do not assume a typo will be fixed automatically, and do not send a replacement transfer until the provider confirms what happened to the first instruction.

Do not split a payment to avoid a review. HMRC guidance discusses linked transactions, so dividing one payment can still be considered as a connected pattern and may create additional reconciliation problems.

What if the provider will not explain or resolve the hold?

  1. Ask for the provider’s formal complaint process, including the required channel, reference number and response timetable.
  2. State the practical outcome you need: confirmation of missing information, correction of beneficiary details, cancellation, return of funds or an explanation of the next procedural step.
  3. Identify the regulator or consumer-protection route that applies to the country, product and provider. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so an avenue available for a bank transfer may not apply to a money-transfer app, card-funded payment or digital-wallet transaction.

For US remittance transfers, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s “Remittance transfers” resource hub, last modified 1 July 2025, points to Regulation E materials covering cancellation, refunds and error resolution. That resource does not decide whether Regulation E applies to your particular payment. Check the transaction’s provider, amount, destination and funding method before relying on those protections.

How to protect your documents and account

  • Use only the official app, website or a telephone number independently obtained from the provider’s own materials.
  • Check the domain and app publisher before signing in; never disclose a one-time passcode to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
  • Ask whether files should be uploaded in-app, through a secure portal or by another verified method. Ordinary email may not be appropriate for identity or financial records.
  • Keep copies in a protected location and note what you submitted. Do not send more personal information than the provider’s question requires.
  • If a message pressures you to pay an extra “release fee,” move funds to a new account or bypass the provider’s support team, stop and verify it independently.

Questions to ask before using a provider for a future transfer

A different service cannot unlock a payment already under review. For a future transfer, compare route-specific information before sending money:

Comparison point What to confirm for the exact route
Total cost Transfer fee plus the exchange rate and any receiving or intermediary charge.
Delivery and payout Estimated timing, destination availability and whether the recipient receives a bank deposit, cash pickup or another payout type.
Support access How to reach a human or secure support channel and how case references are handled.
Cancellation and refunds When cancellation is possible, how a return is issued and which deductions may apply.
Regulatory status Which entity is providing the service and what authorization or consumer-protection regime covers the transaction in each relevant country.

Keep the confirmation and recipient details until the payment is completed. Accurate information at the start reduces avoidable requests, but no provider can guarantee that a transaction will not be reviewed.

Key points to remember

  • A compliance hold can involve traceable payer and payee information, identity, source of funds, purpose, transaction history or higher-risk indicators.
  • UK HMRC thresholds and enhanced-due-diligence guidance apply to the regulated businesses and circumstances described in those materials, not automatically to every international transfer worldwide.
  • Contact the sending provider through a verified official channel, ask for the exact outstanding item and submit accurate information securely.
  • There is no universal release deadline, and a hold does not by itself show criminal suspicion.
  • Do not duplicate, split or reroute the payment until the provider confirms the original transaction’s status.
