Intel did not remove cores across its processor lineup. Starting with 12th Gen Core, Intel introduced a hybrid design in some models that combines larger Performance-cores (P-cores) with smaller Efficient-cores (E-cores). The exact mix depends on the processor model, and some 12th Gen and newer models use P-cores only.
Why did Intel remove cores?
The premise is misleading: Intel has not made a universal switch to fewer cores. The apparent change is a shift in the design of some processors, not a blanket reduction. Intel’s hybrid approach began with 12th Gen Core, but whether a processor has P-cores, E-cores, or both depends on its exact SKU.
Intel’s aim is to match different kinds of work to different core designs. P-cores target demanding, lightly threaded or burst workloads; E-cores target efficiency and scalable work that can run across more threads. This is an architectural goal, not a promise that every program will run faster or use less power.

What are Intel P-cores and E-cores?
P-cores: demanding, lightly threaded work
Intel describes Performance-cores as designed for raw speed and workloads that benefit from strong performance on a smaller number of threads. A game or an application with a time-sensitive main thread may benefit from this kind of core, although actual results depend on the software and processor.

- Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity
E-cores: efficiency and scalable work
Intel describes Efficient-cores as targeting performance-per-watt, background tasks, and workloads that can scale across multiple threads. Intel Support calls them “Designed to maximize CPU efficiency, measured as performance-per-watt.” That is Intel’s stated design goal, not an independent measurement of a particular processor’s power use or speed. Intel Support: What Is Performance Hybrid Architecture?
Intel’s architectural rationale is that multiple E-cores can fit in the physical space of one P-core, allowing a processor to handle background or highly threaded work alongside demanding tasks assigned to P-cores. This describes Intel’s design rationale; it is not a standalone die-area measurement. Intel Developer Zone: Hybrid Architecture

How does the processor decide which core handles a task?
Hybrid processors rely on both hardware and software. Intel Thread Director provides hardware guidance about workloads, but the operating system must support and enable the scheduling features for that guidance to be used. Intel’s developer guidance also advises software developers to enumerate logical processors on hybrid systems rather than assume every processor is alike.
That makes the operating system, application, and workload relevant to the result. The architecture does not guarantee that every operating system, game, or application will schedule tasks equally well. Intel discusses hybrid scheduling and developer considerations in its 12th Gen game developer guide.

How many cores do Intel processors have?
There is no single core layout for Intel Core processors. Check the specifications for the complete model number, including its suffix, rather than inferring the layout from the generation or the “Core” name. Intel’s 12th Gen documentation notes that some models have only P-cores, while others use a hybrid arrangement.
For scale, Intel’s 14th Gen desktop product brief lists configurations of up to 24 cores: 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores. “Up to” matters: this is the maximum configuration in that product brief, not the core count of every 14th Gen desktop processor. How to compare processors with different core layouts
Total core count alone is not enough to predict which processor will suit a task. Compare the exact models across these factors:
- P-core and E-core counts: Note each type separately. A total that combines unlike core designs does not describe how a particular workload will perform.
- Your workload: Consider whether it depends on a few fast threads, scales across many threads, or runs mostly in the background.
- Power and efficiency priorities: E-cores are intended to improve performance-per-watt and handle scalable or background work, but the design goal does not establish a particular system’s measured power use.
- Operating system and application support: Scheduling support affects how hybrid resources are used; software behavior can vary.
- Exact model and platform: Verify the full SKU specifications and compatibility with the system or motherboard you plan to use.
Intel’s product documentation explains the intended roles of the core types and lists model configurations, but it does not establish a universal performance winner. The right comparison depends on the specific processors, workload, and platform.
