Indian IT shares climbed broadly in morning trading on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Livemint reported that the Nifty IT index was up about 3%, with major IT stocks gaining as much as 5%. Contemporaneous coverage pointed to HCLTech’s quarterly results and AI-related deal news, alongside a stronger dollar against the rupee. Those are reported explanations, not proof that any one factor caused the rally. The available figures are morning or intraday snapshots, not confirmed closing returns.
What happened to Indian IT shares on October 13?
The rise extended beyond HCLTech and TCS: Livemint described gains across most IT stocks in morning trade and put the Nifty IT index roughly 3% higher. That breadth suggests a sector-wide move during the session’s early trading, rather than a rally limited to two companies.
The headline figures of HCLTech up 6% and TCS up more than 5% should be treated cautiously. The available contemporaneous reporting does not establish when those exact readings were recorded or whether they were closing gains. Share prices can move substantially between the morning, later intraday trading and the close.

What factors did coverage cite?
HCLTech’s results and AI partnership
HCLTech’s investor-relations materials list its Q2 FY27 investor release and financial results, as well as an announcement of a global partnership with Anthropic, both dated October 12, 2026. Moneycontrol’s report the following day cited strong HCLTech earnings and AI deal wins among the catalysts for the wider IT-sector rise.
#1 Best Overall
The timing gives investors a plausible company-specific reason to focus on HCLTech: results and partnership news arrived immediately before the rally. But the available reporting does not establish how much either announcement contributed to the share move, nor does it provide enough comparable company fundamentals to rank HCLTech against other IT shares.
Quarterly results and the dollar-rupee move
Angel One also pointed to stronger Q2 performance and a higher dollar against the rupee as factors associated with the sector’s rise. That is an explanation offered by the outlet; the available information does not quantify a currency effect or show that it was the decisive driver. A market-wide rally can reflect several influences at once, and a same-day correlation does not establish causation.

How TCS’s results fit the timeline
TCS’s official corporate-actions listing shows financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, on October 8—five calendar days before the October 13 rally. That date is useful context, but it does not establish that TCS’s results triggered its share gain on Tuesday. Moneycontrol’s cited explanation focused on HCLTech’s results and AI deal wins; the available coverage does not isolate a TCS-specific catalyst for the move.
| Company or indicator | Evidence available for October 13 | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| HCLTech | Q2 FY27 results and an Anthropic partnership announcement were dated October 12; contemporaneous coverage cited earnings and AI deal news. | The precise contribution of either announcement to the share-price rise, or a verified closing return. |
| TCS | Results for the quarter ended September 30 were listed on October 8. | That the results caused the October 13 gain or what the final return was. |
| Nifty IT | Livemint reported it about 3% higher in morning trading; Angel One reported an intraday range. | The index’s closing level or closing percentage change. |
What the intraday figures say—and what they do not
Angel One reported that the Nifty IT opened at 28,655.40 on October 13, reached an intraday low of 28,618.45 and an intraday high of 29,349.10. These are the outlet’s reported session figures, not a closing value. They show the range through the period covered by that update, but without a closing figure they cannot confirm the index’s full-day return.
Likewise, Livemint’s roughly 3% index gain and “as much as 5%” description refer to a morning-trading report. They should not be converted into end-of-day performance. The precise final gains for HCLTech, TCS and the Nifty IT index are not established by the figures available here.

No. Moneycontrol reported that brokerages remained divided over HCLTech’s valuation and whether a broader demand recovery would endure. A sharp one-day rise reflects trading during one session; by itself it cannot show that customer demand has strengthened across the sector or that higher valuations are justified.

For a more grounded read, separate near-term catalysts from evidence of a durable trend: follow subsequent company disclosures and results for signs of sustained demand, and compare share performance with later full-session index data rather than relying on an early trading snapshot. The reported rally is a market event, not a buy signal.
