Indian IT stocks rise or fall after earnings when investors revise their view of a company’s future performance against expectations already reflected in its share price. A profit increase can still disappoint if growth or guidance is weaker than expected; a profit miss can be followed by a rise if the outlook is better than feared. To interpret a result, compare it with the company’s prior guidance and market expectations, then examine revenue growth, margins, profit, cash generation, bookings and management’s outlook. No single result metric establishes why a share moved, and the disclosures discussed here do not prove a universal pattern or a typical post-results return.
Why can a stock fall after apparently good results?
“Good” can mean several different things: profit is higher than a year earlier, revenue beats the company’s forecast, or the result exceeds what investors expected. Those are not interchangeable. A company can report year-over-year growth while missing a market expectation that was higher still. It can also meet its own guidance range while delivering less than investors had priced in.
A share price reflects expectations about future earnings as well as reported performance. Before results, investors may already anticipate strong growth, margin improvement or a recovery in client spending. If the published numbers merely confirm that optimistic scenario—or point to slower growth ahead—the update may disappoint even though the company remains profitable. Conversely, a weak quarter can be less damaging if investors had expected worse and management’s outlook suggests conditions may improve.
This is a way to frame a possible reaction, not a reliable formula for predicting one. An earnings release alone cannot account for all the information behind a price change. Market expectations, valuation and other market news may matter, too; the company disclosures available for this article do not quantify those effects or establish a usual direction or size for Indian IT shares’ moves after results.

What should you compare before judging a quarter?
Start by aligning the reporting period and the type of number. Compare a quarter with the same quarter a year earlier for year-over-year change, and with the immediately preceding quarter where sequential movement or guidance makes that comparison relevant. Then check the result against management’s earlier forecast and, separately, against market expectations if you have a reliable consensus figure. A company’s own guidance range is not a substitute for analyst consensus.
Use the following measures together rather than treating a headline profit or revenue figure as a complete scorecard:
- Revenue growth: Check what the company actually reports and whether its measure adjusts for currency movements.
- Operating margin: Look at both the margin level and its change. Revenue can rise while profitability per unit of revenue weakens.
- Net income and earnings per share: These show profit and profit attributable per share, but should be read alongside operating performance and cash conversion.
- Operating cash flow: Compare cash generated from operations with reported net income to see whether accounting profit is accompanied by cash generation.
- Bookings and deal indicators: Consider them as signals of potential future work, not as revenue already earned or recognized.
- Management guidance: Assess what the company expects next, including the metric, period and currency basis used in its forecast.
Not every company discloses the same measures in the same form. A fair comparison therefore requires matching periods, metric definitions and currency bases rather than putting superficially similar figures side by side.

How does currency change the revenue picture?
For an Indian IT-services company that earns revenue in multiple currencies, the reported amount can change both because the underlying business changed and because exchange rates changed. Constant-currency growth aims to separate the currency-conversion effect from the underlying comparison. Reported-currency growth shows the amount translated into the reporting currency. Neither figure should be silently substituted for the other.

Wipro’s July 16, 2026 release for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 illustrates the distinction. IT-services revenue was $2,614.5 million, up 1.0% year over year in reported dollars and 0.9% in constant currency. The two growth rates are close in this example; that does not make the distinction unimportant in other quarters. When reviewing another company, check its own definition and stated currency basis rather than assuming every firm calculates or presents the measure identically.
What do margins, profit and cash flow add?
Revenue indicates the scale of sales, but it does not show how much the company retained from those sales or whether reported profit translated into cash. Operating margin expresses operating profit relative to revenue, so its direction can help distinguish growth that is becoming more or less profitable. Net income and EPS give further views of the result, while operating cash flow provides a separate check on cash generated from operations.
In Wipro’s June 2026 quarter, the release reported an IT-services operating margin of 16.0%, down 1.2 percentage points year over year. It also reported net income of ₹33.6 billion and EPS of ₹3.20, each up 0.6% year over year, and operating cash flow equal to 98.0% of net income. Read together, these figures describe a mixed operating picture: slight year-over-year growth in revenue, a lower operating margin, modest growth in net income and EPS, and operating cash flow close to net income. They do not, by themselves, establish how the share should have reacted.
When comparing quarters, preserve the unit and comparison basis. A change in margin stated in percentage points is not the same as a percentage change in the margin. Likewise, a cash-flow-to-net-income ratio is a relationship for the reported period, not a forecast that the same conversion will recur.

Do bookings and large deals mean revenue is about to rise?
Bookings and large-deal announcements can offer clues about demand and potential future work. They are not equivalent to revenue recognized in the quarter. Contract timing, delivery schedules and other factors separate a deal being booked from the work being performed and recorded as revenue. A large booking figure may support a more constructive view of the pipeline, but it does not guarantee that revenue will appear immediately or at a particular margin.
Wipro reported total bookings and large-deal bookings for Q1 FY27. Those measures belong beside current revenue and guidance as forward-looking indicators, not in place of them. If a company reports such figures, check the period covered and its definition, then look for subsequent evidence in revenue, management commentary and later disclosures. Do not infer a specific future growth rate from a booking number unless the company provides a basis for that conclusion.
Why can guidance matter more than the reported quarter?
Results explain what happened in the period just ended; guidance can alter expectations about the period ahead. A mixed quarter may be received more favorably if the forecast implies improving demand or stabilizing margins. Strong past results may fail to reassure investors if management projects slower growth or warns of pressure on profitability. The importance investors assign to guidance depends on what they expected beforehand, so it is not automatically more important than earnings in every case.
Wipro’s July 16, 2026 release gave September-quarter IT-services revenue guidance of $2,574 million to $2,627 million, corresponding to sequential constant-currency guidance of negative 1.5% to positive 0.5%. This range is a forecast for that next quarter, not an actual result. The range also communicates uncertainty: its lower and upper bounds describe a span, rather than a single promised outcome.

Management connected its outlook to client investment. In the same release, CEO and Managing Director Srini Pallia said: “Clients are moving beyond technology modernization to AI-enabled operating models that improve quality, resilience, and productivity.” CFO Aparna Iyer said: “While these investments may create some near-term margin volatility, it sets a strong foundation for future growth.” These are management statements about the company’s interpretation and outlook, not independent proof that a particular growth or margin outcome will follow.
How can you tell whether a company met its own guidance?
Compare the actual result with the company’s stated range on a like-for-like basis, including currency treatment. This tells you whether performance landed inside, below or above that forecast; it does not tell you whether the result beat market consensus or was already reflected in the share price.
Wipro’s historical guidance-versus-actual tracker lists Q1 FY27 guided-currency revenue of $2,619.1 million against a guidance range of $2,597 million to $2,651 million. The tracker also lists reported-currency revenue of $2,614.5 million. The guided-currency actual falls within the range. Because the tracker’s guided-currency figure and release’s reported-currency figure use different bases, they should not be treated as identical measures. This comparison is useful for checking forecast delivery, but it cannot answer how the market judged the result relative to its own expectations.

How to read an earnings release step by step
- Confirm the period. Note the quarter-end date, fiscal-year label and release date. A fiscal-year quarter should not be mistaken for a calendar-year quarter.
- Find the comparable revenue figures. Record reported growth and constant-currency growth where both are given. Keep the metric, currency and year-over-year or sequential basis attached to each figure.
- Check profitability and cash. Review operating margin and its direction, net income, EPS and operating cash flow. Note whether the measures are up or down against the stated comparison period.
- Look for forward indicators. Read bookings or large-deal measures with their definitions and timing caveat; then locate management’s next-period guidance.
- Test the forecast against actuals. Where the company publishes a guidance tracker, compare its actual with the original range using the same currency basis.
- Separate business performance from price interpretation. Ask what the release changed about the outlook, but do not claim the release alone caused a market move or infer a typical return from operating metrics.
What the current Wipro example can—and cannot—show
The Wipro Q1 FY27 figures show why a single headline is incomplete. The company reported low positive year-over-year IT-services revenue growth, both in reported dollars and constant currency; margin was lower year over year; net income and EPS rose slightly; operating cash flow was 98.0% of net income; and the next-quarter constant-currency guidance included both a modest decline and modest growth at its endpoints. Its tracker placed guided-currency revenue within the company’s own range. An investor could weigh those signals differently depending on expectations and valuation.

That example is specific to Wipro’s quarter ended June 30, 2026, and its release dated July 16, 2026. It is not a sector-wide template, a cross-company ranking or evidence that any one metric predicts next-day returns. Official investor-relations materials provide the appropriate starting point for checking each company’s disclosures: Infosys’s FY26 Q4 results page organizes its press releases, statements, fact sheet, investor sheet and earnings-call transcript, while HCLTech’s quarter-results index organizes releases and financials by quarter and fiscal year. Those disclosure routes do not provide a comparable event-window study for the sector.
Why there is no simple rule for the share-price move
To establish a typical post-results reaction, one would need comparable price data around results dates across companies and periods, alongside a way to account for expectations, valuation and other market information. The evidence described here does not include a systematic event study, a complete set of current comparable results across major Indian IT firms, or a comparable analyst-consensus and valuation dataset. It therefore cannot support claims such as “IT stocks usually fall when margins contract” or a sector-wide percentage reaction.
The practical interpretation is narrower and more reliable: earnings releases let you assess business performance and management’s stated outlook. They can help explain plausible reasons an investor might reassess a company, but they do not alone prove why the share price rose or fell. Keep operating facts distinct from the market’s expectations and from any explanation of a particular trading session.
