In-flight Wi‑Fi fails for two fundamentally different reasons: your device has not completed the airline’s connection process, or the aircraft’s shared service is limited or temporarily unavailable. Start with airplane mode on, turn Wi‑Fi back on, join the aircraft network, and finish the captive-portal sign-in. If the portal will not load, open the airline’s published address manually and temporarily disable a VPN or network filter. If the service remains slow or absent after those steps, the cause may be shared capacity, satellite coverage, weather, regulatory restrictions, or an onboard fault that passengers cannot repair.

First determine whether the problem is yours or the aircraft’s

A phone can show that it is connected to an aircraft network without having internet access. Association with the Wi‑Fi radio is only the first stage; the airline’s portal must still identify you, sell or validate access, and authorize internet traffic. A wrong network, an unopened portal, an incomplete purchase or login, or a VPN that intercepts the portal can all stop that process.

Other failures occur after you have done everything correctly. Everyone in the cabin shares the available connection, and the aircraft may move between satellite beams, fly through a region where the service is not authorized, encounter adverse weather, or suffer a technical problem. Those conditions can cause slow speeds, pauses, or a complete outage regardless of your phone or laptop settings.

Check that your flight actually offers usable Wi‑Fi

Airlines publish different coverage maps, aircraft lists, access rules, and portal instructions. Verify the current information for the flight rather than relying on a previous trip or a generic “Wi‑Fi available” label.

These pages are carrier-specific. A portal address or policy from one airline should not be entered on another airline’s flight, and an aircraft may have different equipment from another aircraft in the same fleet.

Check access terms before you board

Some airlines offer complimentary access, while others may require a pass, account, payment, or a particular service tier. Eligibility, price, duration, and permitted use can vary by flight and can change over time. Confirm the current terms on the operating airline’s own page; there is no universal in-flight Wi‑Fi price or pass that applies across carriers.

Use the airline’s connection sequence

The following order avoids the most common passenger-side mistakes. Follow any announcement or printed instruction from the operating airline if it differs.

  1. Wait until the onboard service is permitted. Airlines may instruct you to remain in airplane mode after the boarding door closes or until the crew permits use of Wi‑Fi.
  2. Turn airplane mode on. This disables the cellular radio while leaving you in control of Wi‑Fi.
  3. Turn Wi‑Fi back on while airplane mode remains enabled. Airplane mode does not mean that every radio must remain off; both Delta and Air India describe airplane mode with Wi‑Fi enabled for onboard use.
  4. Select the aircraft’s network. Choose the network name specified by the airline, not a similarly named airport, lounge, or personal hotspot. Wait for the device to show that it has joined.
  5. Open a normal web browser. A captive portal may open automatically. If it does not, type the airline’s published portal address directly, such as DeltaWiFi.com or wifi.airindia.com on the corresponding services.
  6. Complete every portal step. Accept terms, enter the requested details, sign in, redeem a pass, or complete payment. A network icon alone does not prove that authorization has finished.
  7. Test an ordinary web page. Use a simple page to confirm actual internet access before launching a work VPN, video call, or other bandwidth-heavy task.

If a portal page appears partially loaded, close extra portal tabs and reload the same address once. Do not repeatedly purchase access while the first transaction is still processing; check the portal’s account or receipt status first. If a payment appears unsuccessful, note whether your bank shows a pending charge before trying again, and use the airline’s support process for duplicate or unresolved transactions.

When the sign-in page will not appear

A captive portal normally intercepts the first browser request. The interception can fail when a browser restores an old tab, the device has stale network information, or a security tool prevents the redirect.

  1. Confirm that the Wi‑Fi settings show the aircraft network as joined, not merely visible.
  2. Open a fresh browser tab and enter the exact portal address published by the airline. Do not substitute an address from another carrier.
  3. Temporarily pause a VPN, private relay, DNS filter, corporate security agent, or similar network filter, then reload the portal.
  4. Finish the airline login or purchase before restoring the VPN or filter. Lufthansa specifically instructs passengers to disable active VPN connections while loading its portal; Delta likewise advises completing connection and login or purchase before enabling a VPN.
  5. If the page still does not load, disconnect from the network, wait a few seconds, reselect it, and repeat the browser step.

Managed work devices can impose firewall or certificate rules that you cannot change. Air India notes that VPN connectivity depends on company configuration, so an employer’s IT team may be required for a corporate device. Do not assume that a VPN will work on every onboard network even after the portal login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a phone, also check that the browser is not set to use a permanently encrypted DNS or private-relay service that blocks local portal interception. If your employer controls that setting, do not bypass company policy; use a personal device or ask IT for an approved procedure. The goal is to reach the airline portal first, not to weaken security settings permanently.

Connected to Wi‑Fi but still offline

This state usually means the radio connection succeeded but authorization did not. Look for a portal tab, notification, or an account status that says access is active. If you closed the portal before the final confirmation, reopen the airline address and complete the remaining step.

When the network is stuck, use the device’s option to forget the aircraft network and join it again. Delta documents “Forget This Network” as a way to restart a connection. The wording and menu location vary by operating system, but the action removes the saved association so that the portal negotiation starts over.

After reconnecting, repeat the sequence with airplane mode still on and Wi‑Fi on. Keep the VPN disabled until a basic web page loads, then re-enable it only if the airline’s rules and your organization’s policy permit it. If the portal shows an active session but ordinary pages still fail, sign out and back in only once; repeated sign-ins can create confusing duplicate sessions.

Why in-flight Wi‑Fi can be slow even when it works

The cabin shares one service

The aircraft’s connection is a shared resource. Every passenger competes for the available link. Jetstar explicitly says that sharing can significantly slow speeds and affect activities such as gaming. A slow page during a busy period does not necessarily indicate a fault in your device.

You can reduce your own demand by pausing cloud backups, app updates, large downloads, and video autoplay. Switching a video service to a lower quality may make your session more usable, but it cannot create additional aircraft capacity or guarantee a particular speed. Do not treat a faster phone, travel router, adapter, or power bank as a cure for a congested aircraft link.

Satellite beam changes can interrupt traffic

Aircraft using satellite connectivity may move from one beam to another. Air India identifies beam transitions as a reason service can be interrupted. A brief pause followed by recovery can therefore be a normal handoff rather than a failed login. Avoid repeatedly changing settings during a short interruption; wait and try a simple page again.

Route and regulatory limits matter

Some countries or airspaces do not authorize the service. Air India notes that overflying a country without authorization can make Wi‑Fi unavailable. The same aircraft may therefore have service on one segment of a journey and no service on another. A route-related gap cannot be fixed by purchasing a different pass or changing browsers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weather can affect availability

Adverse weather is another condition Air India lists for interruption or unavailability. Waiting and trying again after the aircraft moves beyond the affected area may be the only passenger action. If the crew announces an interruption, rely on that update rather than repeatedly reconnecting.

Onboard equipment can fail

Antenna, modem, network, or ground-service faults can affect everyone. A crew member may know whether the system is expected to return, but changing a phone setting cannot repair an aircraft-side outage. Ask whether Wi‑Fi is operating before spending time on device troubleshooting.

Because these variables differ by flight, there is no reliable universal speed, uptime, or latency figure to use for every airline or route. Airline pages may describe a service as available while still warning that coverage and experience vary.

What you can fix and what you cannot

Situation Passenger actions Likely limit
Wrong network or cellular mode Use airplane mode, re-enable Wi‑Fi, and select the named aircraft network. None if the correct service is operating.
Portal not opened Browse to the carrier’s exact portal address and finish authorization. Portal may be unavailable during a wider service fault.
VPN or managed security blocks redirect Pause it for sign-in; consult IT for company-managed settings. Some corporate policies cannot be changed onboard.
High cabin demand Reduce nonessential activity and retry later. Shared capacity is outside your control.
Satellite transition, weather, or unauthorized airspace Wait and retry after conditions change. No device setting can restore unavailable coverage.
Persistent aircraft fault Ask the crew and use the airline’s support process after landing if needed. The service may remain unavailable for the flight.

A practical decision tree for the rest of the flight

  1. No aircraft network is visible: confirm that Wi‑Fi is enabled while airplane mode is on, then check the airline’s flight-specific availability information. If the crew says the service is not operating, stop troubleshooting the device.
  2. The network is visible but you cannot join: select the exact network name, retry once, and use “Forget This Network” before joining again if the device has a stale saved entry.
  3. You joined but no portal appears: open the published carrier address manually and pause VPN or filtering software.
  4. The portal opens but access is not active: complete all terms, login, pass, or payment steps, then test a simple web page.
  5. Access works but is slow: allow for shared demand and route conditions. Pause unnecessary background traffic, but do not assume a faster device or accessory will increase the aircraft’s capacity.
  6. Everyone appears offline or the connection repeatedly drops: ask a crew member whether Wi‑Fi is expected to work. Satellite transitions, weather, regulatory restrictions, and technical faults may require waiting or accepting that service will not return.

How to compare airline Wi‑Fi without misleading yourself

Compare a particular airline’s service on flight-specific availability, aircraft and route coverage, access or pass terms, permitted use, portal instructions, and support options. Do not rank airlines by a universal speed claim: the available guidance does not establish a cross-airline speed comparison, and performance can vary between aircraft in the same fleet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the operating carrier’s current page even when a codeshare appears in your booking. The company selling the ticket may not be the company operating the aircraft or providing the portal. Save the operating carrier’s instructions and network name separately so you do not accidentally join an airport network or use the wrong portal.

How to avoid losing time on your next flight

  • Check the operating airline’s current Wi‑Fi page for the aircraft and route before departure.
  • Save the carrier’s official portal address in a note, but use it only for that carrier.
  • Know how to pause and restore your VPN or corporate network filter before boarding.
  • Download essential documents, messages, maps, and entertainment before takeoff; onboard Wi‑Fi is not guaranteed.
  • Keep payment or pass details available if the carrier requires them, and verify whether access is valid for the whole flight or only a defined session.
  • Do not buy a generic travel router, adapter, or power bank expecting it to repair an aircraft service outage. Those accessories cannot fix missing coverage, a regulatory restriction, or a failed onboard system.

The useful boundary is simple: complete the airline’s portal process first, then diagnose performance. If the device is correctly joined and authorized but the cabin service is slow or absent, the responsible next step is to wait, check with the crew, or use the airline’s support channel—not to keep changing phone settings indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my phone say connected to airplane Wi‑Fi but have no internet?

Joining the aircraft network is not the same as completing the captive-portal login. Open the airline’s published portal address, finish any terms, account, pass, or payment steps, and test a simple web page. Temporarily disable a VPN or network filter if the portal will not load.

Should airplane mode be on when using in-flight Wi‑Fi?

Yes, when the airline instructs it. Turn airplane mode on, then turn Wi‑Fi back on separately. Delta and Air India both describe this pattern; airplane mode does not require Wi‑Fi to remain disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the Wi‑Fi login page never appears?

Confirm that you joined the aircraft network, open a fresh browser tab, and enter the carrier’s exact portal address. Pause an active VPN, private relay, DNS filter, or corporate security tool during sign-in, then restore it only after access works if permitted.

Can a VPN stop airplane Wi‑Fi from connecting?

It can prevent a captive portal from loading on some services. Lufthansa and Delta instruct passengers to complete portal access before enabling a VPN. Corporate device settings may require help from your employer, and VPN behavior is not guaranteed on every airline network.

Why does airplane Wi‑Fi slow down during the flight?

The connection is shared by passengers, so demand can reduce performance. Satellite beam transitions, route restrictions, weather, or technical faults can also cause pauses or outages. There is no universal speed figure that applies to every airline or flight.

What does “Forget This Network” do?

It removes the saved Wi‑Fi association so the device can join again and restart the portal negotiation. Delta lists forgetting the network as a reconnection step. You must then select the aircraft network and complete authorization again if requested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can buying a different pass fix an aircraft-wide outage?

No. A pass cannot restore service that is unavailable because of coverage, unauthorized airspace, weather, satellite handoff, or an onboard technical fault. Check the carrier’s current terms and ask the crew before making another purchase.

Who should I contact when Wi‑Fi never returns?

Ask a crew member whether the service is operating or expected to recover. For unresolved billing or access issues, use the airline’s official support process. If the aircraft system is down, passengers may have to accept that it will remain unavailable for the flight.

The Bottom Line

Join the correct aircraft network with airplane mode on and Wi‑Fi re-enabled, complete the carrier’s portal, and pause VPN or filtering tools until authorization succeeds. If reconnecting once does not help and the service is slow or absent for everyone, shared capacity, coverage, weather, regulatory limits, or an aircraft fault is the more likely explanation. Wait, ask the crew, and use the airline’s support channel rather than buying accessories or repeatedly changing device settings.
