A personal AI should not try to know everything about everyone. I want mine to remember the few things that help it work with me—my preferences, ongoing projects, and decisions—while letting me see, correct, and remove that context. The hard part is not collecting more data. It is deciding what deserves to carry forward, whether the system can retrieve it accurately, and who else can access it.

What makes an AI personal?

“Personal” can mean several different things. An assistant might adapt to preferences stated in a conversation, refer to earlier chats, or use information from files and connected services. Those sources do not make it a person or prove that it understands me. They give it context it can use when responding.

Google described Gemini past-chat personalization in an August 13, 2025 feature announcement: the app could reference earlier chats to learn preferences and tailor responses. That is a vendor’s description of a feature at that time, not independent evidence about its performance or a guarantee of present availability. Google also described an experimental feature in March 2025 that could use Search history with permission and could be disconnected. That announcement, too, describes a historical product state.

Those examples point to a useful distinction: an assistant can be more personal because it has access to more context, but access alone does not make the context appropriate, accurate, or under my control.

What I want mine to remember

I’m building around a narrow question: what would save me from re-explaining myself without turning every interaction into a permanent record? The answer should be a deliberate working context, not an indiscriminate archive.

Useful context

  • Stable preferences: choices that repeatedly shape a good answer, such as preferred level of detail or constraints I have explicitly stated.
  • Active projects: goals, decisions, and next steps that remain relevant across conversations.
  • Corrections: updates when an earlier assumption is wrong or has changed.

Context that needs a reason

Personal files, browsing activity, search history, and connected-app data can reveal far more than a stated preference. I would treat each as a separate permission decision, not as a default ingredient in personalization. If a detail is temporary, sensitive, or irrelevant to future help, remembering it may create more risk than value.

This is a design boundary, not a claim that I have implemented a particular memory system or connected it to those data sources. The cited product announcements establish what providers described at specific dates; they do not establish what my own system can access.

How I would keep memory under my control

A useful personal memory needs more than a switch labeled “on.” It needs understandable controls over what goes in, what is used, and what can be removed.

  • Compact, Connected Design: Includes a 2TB M.2 SSD, 10GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C connectivity, and HDMI 2.1b.
  • Inspect: I should be able to see the remembered information that may shape an answer.
  • Correct: If a preference or project detail is wrong or outdated, I should be able to change it.
  • Disconnect: A connected service should not remain available just because I once granted permission.
  • Delete: I should be able to remove remembered context rather than merely stop new information from being added.
  • Choose scope: A detail useful for one task should not automatically become context for every task or tool.

These controls are provider- and feature-specific. Google’s March 2025 announcement, for example, described permission and disconnection for its experimental Search-history feature; that does not establish equivalent controls for every connected service or current product state.

There is also a broader research direction: Stanford’s Portable Memory initiative describes persistent context that can move across tools and be shared selectively. A January 2025 Microsoft Research position paper argues for user-owned, granular, revocable context through a proposed Human Context Protocol. These are proposals and research directions, not proof of a widely adopted standard or a feature available across assistants.

Why portability matters—and why it is not solved

If all useful context lives inside one provider’s assistant, switching tools may mean starting over. A portable layer could let a person choose which context to share with which tool, rather than making each assistant independently accumulate a profile.

Portability only helps if the person retains meaningful control. A memory that travels everywhere without clear permissions would expand exposure, not autonomy. The goal is selective sharing by purpose: enough context for a task, with the ability to revoke it. Stanford’s project frames portable memory in those terms; the Microsoft Research paper advocates granular, revocable user control. Neither source establishes that this model is already standard practice.

Can an AI reliably remember what matters?

Not necessarily. A system can have the right information somewhere in its records and still retrieve the wrong detail, miss a relevant one, or answer confidently from incomplete context.

PersonaBench, a 2025 paper by Tan and colleagues in Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics, evaluates personalized question answering using synthetic profiles and documents. It reports that the tested retrieval-augmented generation pipelines struggled with personalized questions even when given the full set of synthetic user documents. This is evidence about those evaluated systems and benchmark conditions; it does not show that every commercial assistant performs poorly.

For my purposes, that means memory should be treated as fallible. A personal assistant should distinguish a stored fact from an inference, surface uncertainty when it matters, and make it possible to correct an answer. More stored context is not a substitute for reliable retrieval.

What “private” needs to mean

Privacy is a question about data flows, not just a reassuring label. Before trusting an assistant with personal context, I would want to know what information it collects, where it is processed, whether it is shared, and which controls apply to the specific feature I use.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, says information processed while signed in may include prompts, shared files, connected-app information, device information, and generated content. The notice is Google’s documentation for its service; its coverage can differ for signed-out use and individual features, and it should not be generalized to other providers.

Browser assistants deserve particular care because they may interact with pages and forms. A USENIX Security 25 audit by Vekaria and colleagues examined nine GenAI browser assistants and reported collection and sharing practices that included page content and, in some cases, form inputs. Nine is the study’s sample size, not a measure of how common those practices are across the industry. The findings apply to the assistants and behaviors studied, not every personal AI product.

The design test I’m using

My standard is not whether an assistant can build the richest possible profile. It is whether a piece of context earns its place and remains governable.

  1. Identify the purpose. What future task would this information improve?
  2. Choose the source deliberately. A preference I state is different from a file, browser page, or connected service being made available.
  3. Limit the scope. Share only the context needed for the task, rather than treating every memory as universally relevant.
  4. Check the answer. Personal details can be retrieved or interpreted incorrectly; important decisions should not rest on an unverified memory.
  5. Review and revoke. Keep a way to inspect, correct, disconnect, and delete context as needs change.

That approach is less grand than an AI that claims to know its user completely. It is also more useful: the assistant should remember what helps, show its limits, and leave the person in charge of what follows them.
