A USB flash drive can be the easiest choice when the job is simply to carry a few files between devices with compatible USB ports. That convenience does not make it faster, more reliable, or a better value than an SSD, HDD, or SD card for every task. The right choice depends first on what the receiving device supports and what you need to do.
Why is a small flash drive often the first thing I grab?
It is a removable file carrier that can travel in a pocket and connect directly to a compatible USB port. For a quick handoff—documents, a presentation, or a modest batch of photos—that can mean fewer steps than finding a card reader or connecting another storage device. The SD Association describes USB flash drives as versatile, inexpensive options for file transfer and characterizes their strength as “flexible usage.” Its comparison of SSDs, USB drives, and SD cards is dated November 1, 2017, so it is useful for broad use cases, not current prices or model rankings.
Plug-and-go is not guaranteed: the host needs a compatible port, and the operating system and drive must work together. If the destination device has no suitable USB port, the apparent convenience disappears.

Which storage device fits the job?
Choose by the destination and workload, not by a blanket claim that one kind of storage is best. The SD Association’s comparison distinguishes devices used to record media from removable storage used to transfer files, and associates SSDs with performance- and capacity-led needs.

| Storage type | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| USB flash drive | Carrying and transferring files between compatible USB hosts | Port compatibility, capacity, and whether the workload involves sustained writing |
| SD or microSD card | Recording or storing media in a camera or another device designed for that card format | That the host supports the exact card format; a computer may need a reader or adapter |
| SSD | Tasks where performance or larger capacity is the priority | Connection compatibility and the capacity and performance needs of the task |
| HDD | Not established by the cited comparison | The available source does not provide a current HDD comparison, so choose using the needs and specifications of the particular device and workload |
This is a use-case guide, not a speed or price ranking: the cited sources do not establish an apples-to-apples comparison of current models.
When should I use an SD card instead?
Use an SD or microSD card when the device is built to accept that format—for example, a supported camera recording media to a card. A card slot can make the card the simplest option in that device, even if a USB drive is handier for moving the resulting files elsewhere. If your computer lacks a compatible slot, the SD Association’s FAQ discusses using a reader or adapter to access cards.

- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
Card format and speed matter. The SD Association explains that memory-card access speeds vary by brand and manufacturer and describes its speed classes in its Speed Class overview. Check the card requirements of the recording device and the card’s markings rather than assuming every SD card will perform alike.
Does a USB flash drive always transfer files quickly?
No. “USB flash drive” identifies a category, not a guaranteed transfer rate. The SanDisk Ultra Luxe USB 3.2 Gen 1 product page advertises “up to 400MB/s” for that named model; that is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a typical result or an independent test of flash drives generally. The manufacturer’s product-category page does not establish a category-wide speed comparison.

Actual transfer experience depends on the specific drive, host, connection, files, and workload. For a task with sustained writing or demanding performance needs, do not infer suitability from a connector label or a single advertised maximum. The SD Association says USB drives are not ideal for write-intensive applications; its broad comparison associates SSDs with higher performance and larger capacities than USB drives and SD cards, without establishing a benchmark for every model.
How should I choose for a particular transfer?
- Check the receiving device. Use a card if the device is designed for that card format; use a flash drive if the host has a compatible USB port. For a computer without a card slot, consider a compatible reader or adapter.
- Match capacity to the files. Confirm that the chosen medium can hold the files, with room for any additional data the task requires.
- Consider the workload. A quick file handoff is different from repeatedly recording large amounts of data. For sustained writing or a performance-led job, check model-specific specifications and suitability rather than assuming a small removable drive is the right tool.
- Keep another copy of important files. A removable drive is a way to carry data, not a backup strategy by itself. Maintain a separate copy when losing the files would matter.
What does the “$5” in the title mean?
It describes the appeal of a low-cost, handy drive, not a verified current price. The cited material does not establish today’s prices for flash drives, cards, SSDs, or HDDs, and it does not compare their value. Before buying, check the drive’s current price, capacity, port compatibility, and workload fit; do not assume a particular model is available for $5.
