I switched from 1Password to KeePass Password Safe after spending about $300 over five years and, in 2025, paying roughly $60 a year for a family plan whose extra features I rarely used. KeePass costs nothing and keeps an encrypted password database under your control. The saving is real, but so is the work: you must arrange synchronization, backups, compatible apps and recovery yourself.
What KeePass changes compared with a subscription manager
KeePass is free, open-source password-management software. Instead of placing your vault inside a vendor-managed account, it creates a KDBX database file that you unlock with a master key. The official project describes it as a “free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager” and says you can keep all passwords in one database locked with a master key.
That file-based design gives you direct ownership and a clear offline copy. It does not make every part of the system automatically safer: the computer, phone, sync folder and any third-party apps still need to be secured.
Why the switch was worthwhile
Recurring cost
The reported author spent approximately $300 on 1Password over five years and was paying about $60 per year for a family plan in 2025. Those are personal figures, not a universal price comparison; current 1Password pricing is not established here. KeePass itself is free, and the project states that it is open source under an OSI-certified license.

Control over the vault
With KeePass, the encrypted KDBX file can live on your own storage or a synchronization service you choose. You can retain an offline backup, move providers, or inspect the file without waiting for a service export. The trade-off is that there is no vendor responsible for recovering a lost database or repairing a bad synchronization.
1Password versus KeePass
| Decision point | 1Password | KeePass |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | The author reported about $60 per year for a family plan in 2025; current pricing is not stated here. | Free software; storage and optional companion services may still cost money. |
| Vault ownership | Managed through the service account and its applications. | You control the encrypted KDBX file. |
| Synchronization | Built into the service. | You select and configure synchronization, such as a shared Dropbox folder. |
| Family sharing | Service-level sharing features. | Requires your own database and sharing arrangement; no equivalent hosted family workflow is guaranteed. |
| Breach monitoring | Account features depend on the service plan and current offering. | No hosted monitoring service is inherent to KeePass. |
| Setup | Usually quicker because hosting and device linking are integrated. | More initial configuration and app-selection work. |
| Backup responsibility | The service supplies its own infrastructure, subject to its policies. | You must make and test backups. |
| Recovery risk | Account recovery follows the provider’s process. | Loss of the master key and usable backups can make the vault unrecoverable. |
How the migration worked
The reported move used a CSV export from 1Password, an import into KeePass, organization of the entries, and Dropbox synchronization for Windows and Android.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Export from 1Password. Create the CSV export using its export tool and keep the file only for the migration.
- Create a KeePass database. Install KeePass Password Safe, choose a strong, unique master password, and create a new KDBX file.
- Import the CSV. In KeePass, use the import function, select the CSV format that matches the export, and map columns such as title, username, password, URL and notes.
- Inspect and organize. Open several records, check URLs and usernames, remove duplicate or malformed entries, and place records into useful groups.
- Securely remove the export. A CSV is plaintext while it exists. Treat deletion as a precaution: remove it from the computer, downloads folder, recycle bin and any sync location, and do not leave copies in email or cloud history.
- Configure synchronization. Place the KDBX file in a Dropbox folder (or another storage service you trust), then open that file from compatible Windows and Android KeePass clients.
- Avoid conflicting edits. Do not edit the same database simultaneously on two devices. Close KeePass and wait for synchronization to finish before opening and changing the file on another device.
- Make independent backups. Keep dated copies in a separate location and periodically verify that a backup opens with your master password.
Is KeePass secure enough?
KeePass’s security documentation says its database files are encrypted, including usernames, URLs, notes and passwords. KeePass 2.x supports AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption, and its configurable key-derivation options include Argon2. Encryption protects the stored KDBX data; it cannot protect a device that is already compromised or a vault that is unlocked.
- Master password: Use a long, unique passphrase. Anyone who obtains it can open the database.
- Endpoint security: Malware, keyloggers or an unattended unlocked computer can expose entries.
- Plugins and clients: Install only software you trust and keep desktop and mobile clients current.
- Sync provider: A provider can suffer an account or availability problem even though the KDBX contents are encrypted. Use a strong account password and multifactor authentication where available.
- Exports: Plaintext CSV files are a temporary exposure and should not become permanent backups.
A YubiKey security key is an optional physical multifactor-authentication upgrade for accounts such as your storage provider. It is not required to run KeePass and does not replace a strong master password or tested backups.

Who should make the switch?
KeePass is a good fit when you:
- Want to eliminate a recurring password-manager subscription.
- Prefer owning one encrypted file and choosing where it is stored.
- Are comfortable selecting clients for each operating system.
- Will maintain backups and follow a no-conflicting-edits routine.
Keep a hosted manager when you:
- Need effortless synchronization across many devices.
- Rely on polished family sharing or built-in monitoring.
- Do not want to be responsible for backup, recovery and sync troubleshooting.
- May lose access to a vault if a self-managed file or master key is mishandled.
The practical verdict
KeePass can replace a paid password manager when the priority is lower recurring cost and direct control of an encrypted vault. It is not a free version of the same hosted service: synchronization, backup, recovery and cross-device convenience become your job. The switch makes sense for users willing to manage those responsibilities deliberately.
