In the first week home with a newborn, a simple question can be hard to answer at 3 a.m.: “Did you feed her?” Or, “When was the last diaper?” One new-dad app builder says he and his wife kept asking those questions while sleep-deprived, so he made a guide to help them remember. His account points to a practical product lesson: when a parent is holding a baby, a fast record of the essentials may be more useful than a long list of features.
The problem was remembering, not finding more features
In a first-person Reddit post, the builder says he and his wife repeatedly tried to recall whether their baby had been fed and when the last diaper change happened during their first week at home. He describes the need as a consequence of sleep deprivation. That is one family’s experience, not evidence that every new parent needs the same app.
He initially considered adding ounce tracking, growth percentiles, and vaccine schedules. He says he later removed features after finding the app too complicated to use while holding the baby. The design shifted toward one-tap logging for feeds, diapers, and sleep, plus context-oriented “is this normal?” insights rather than charts. His story suggests that reducing the steps to capture a routine event was a more useful design choice for his situation than maximizing feature count; it is not a measured usability result.

What the app builder says made the product usable
Three quick records
Feed, diaper, and sleep logs were the core. A parent returning to the app could check the recent record rather than rely on tired recall. The builder describes this as one-tap logging, but there is no independent test of how quickly or reliably it worked.

Shared and glanceable access
The builder also lists partner sync through CloudKit, night mode, home-screen widgets, and Live Activities. Those are features he reports, not independently verified implementation details. In any newborn tracker, it is worth checking whether sharing actually keeps caregivers’ records in sync, whether the important information is easy to read in low light, and whether the app exposes private details on a lock screen or widget.
Fewer screens can be a safety feature
When a caregiver is occupied, extra entry fields can create friction. For a tracker, the key questions are practical: Can you record an event with one hand? Can you quickly find the last feed or diaper? Can a partner understand the same record? The builder’s account offers a design rationale for prioritizing those tasks, not a ranking of newborn apps.

Keep “is this normal?” guidance within its limits
The builder says the app included context-oriented insights intended to help with “is this normal?” questions. Such guidance should be tied to clear, reputable sources and should not be presented as a diagnosis or personalized medical judgment. An app cannot assess a baby’s individual condition from a log alone; caregivers should contact their baby’s healthcare provider with personal concerns.
The App Store listing for SIDS Info describes educational material for infants from birth to 12 months, links to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe-sleep policy and technical-report resources, and includes a Q&A. It encourages families to discuss the information with a healthcare provider. The listing also says Apple has not verified the developer’s privacy disclosures. That makes source quality, the limits of advice, and privacy statements worth checking separately when evaluating any care-related app.

Safe-sleep advice must come from established guidance
CDC says it supports the 2022 AAP safe-sleep recommendations. Its parent guidance says: “Place your baby on his or her back for all sleep times—naps and at night.” It also recommends a firm, flat sleep surface, room-sharing ideally through at least six months, and keeping soft bedding out of the sleep space. An app or monitor cannot make an unsafe sleep arrangement safe.
The CDC reported about 3,700 sleep-related deaths among U.S. babies in 2022 in a page published September 25, 2024. That figure is national context for why safe-sleep guidance matters; it is not evidence that a tracking app changes risk.

The AAP cautions against infant products that are inconsistent with safe-sleep recommendations and says consumer wellness monitors have not been shown to decrease SIDS risk. A log, alert, or monitor should not be treated as a substitute for recommended sleep practices or medical care. The AAP states: “The information contained on this Web site should not be used as a substitute for the medical care and advice of your pediatrician.”

- Capture: Try entering a feed or diaper change one-handed, then see whether the action is genuinely quick.
- Recall: Check whether the most recent event and its time are easy to find without navigating through charts or menus.
- Sharing: Confirm how partner access works and whether each caregiver sees the same record.
- Guidance: Look for named, credible sources and a clear distinction between general education and medical advice.
- Privacy: Read the app’s privacy disclosures, including what may appear in widgets or lock-screen activities.
- Access: Check readability, night-use settings, and language options that matter to your household.
These checks help compare an app’s fit for a family’s routine; the available information does not establish which app is best.

Use authoritative resources alongside any app
CDC’s infant-parent resource index covers breastfeeding, cleaning and storing infant feeding items, newborn screening, and safe diapering. For a book-format companion, the AAP catalog lists Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality, fourth edition, by Laura A. Jana, MD, FAAP, and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP. A book can be an optional source of broader newborn-care information, but its listing is not evidence that the app builder used or endorsed it.
The builder says he developed the app with SwiftUI, Core Data, CloudKit, WidgetKit, and ActivityKit. Those reported implementation choices may interest other developers, but the central product insight is simpler: build around the moment a tired caregiver needs to record or retrieve information, then treat medical guidance and privacy as separate responsibilities that require care.
