I built a client-side PDF workspace so the document can be processed in the browser instead of being uploaded to a server for that work. The distinction matters: PDF.js can render a PDF from raw binary data, but choosing that library alone does not prove that an application never sends a document over the network. A “zero server uploads” claim is meaningful only when it describes a verified document-processing and storage path.

What “client-side” means in this workspace

Mozilla’s PDF.js is a JavaScript library for rendering PDFs in web applications. Its API can receive a PDF as raw binary data, allowing a browser-based app to work with a file selected on the device. In that arrangement, the document bytes can be handled by the browser rather than sent to a server for PDF processing.

That is an architectural choice, not a security certification. PDF.js runs with the permissions of ordinary JavaScript, and the application around it determines what else happens. A site may still make network requests for its scripts, analytics, or optional services. To substantiate “zero server uploads,” an app’s owner needs to verify the document’s actual processing and storage path and explain what was checked; the library name is not enough.

Why keep PDF processing in the browser?

For a workspace designed around local document handling, the most direct reason is to avoid requiring a server upload for the PDF operation itself. That changes where the document is processed and stored compared with a cloud workflow. It does not, on its own, establish that every part of the site is offline, that no other network connection occurs, or that every PDF feature is available.

There is also a practical implementation consideration: browser memory. PDF.js recommends passing raw data as a typed array rather than converting it to base64, because base64 conversion uses more memory. That matters particularly when handling larger files in a browser, where available memory and behavior can differ across devices.

What local processing does—and does not—guarantee

  • It can mean: the selected PDF is processed in the browser and is not uploaded to a server for that processing, if that is what the application’s verified data path does.
  • It does not automatically mean: the website makes no network requests, has no analytics or third-party scripts, or never offers a networked feature.
  • It does not automatically establish: that every browser, device, or PDF feature is supported, or that processing will always be fast.

For comparison, Adobe distinguishes its client-side PDF Embed API from server-side PDF Services API components processed in Adobe Document Cloud. The relevant product and application configuration determine where work happens; the word “PDF API” alone does not settle the question. Adobe also notes that document controls and storage depend on the site or browser access controls. See Adobe PDF Embed API documentation and Adobe PDF Services API documentation.

Local files and remote PDFs are different cases

A file selected from a user’s device is not the same as a PDF fetched from another website. PDF.js operates under ordinary JavaScript permissions and is subject to cross-origin restrictions. Loading a remote PDF can require that the remote host allow the request through CORS, or that a server proxy retrieve it. That network path is separate from processing a locally selected file. The PDF.js FAQ explains these constraints and notes that supported PDF features vary by browser and version.

How I would verify a “zero server uploads” claim

The claim should be limited to what the application has actually verified. A useful check is to observe network activity while opening and processing a local PDF, then determine whether the document bytes are sent to any server or third-party endpoint. The check should cover the relevant workflow and optional features, not merely confirm that the PDF.js library is present.

That observation still needs careful wording: seeing no document upload during a particular test does not prove that every browser, feature, or future version behaves identically. If the app has not verified network behavior or tested specific environments, it should not assert those details as established facts.

Support depends on the browser and the file

PDF.js documentation cautions that supported features vary with browser and version. A client-side workspace therefore should state its supported browsers and tested document types only when the application has actually been tested against them. No single implementation choice justifies a promise that every PDF will work, every file will process quickly, or every browser will behave the same way.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

For implementation details, PDF.js recommends raw typed-array input rather than base64 conversion because conversion uses more memory. This is a useful efficiency measure, but it is not a guarantee of a particular processing time or a substitute for testing with the app’s intended files and devices.

Does pdfjs-dist process PDFs entirely on the client side?

It can render a PDF on the client when an application supplies the document data to PDF.js in the browser. But pdfjs-dist does not, by itself, guarantee that a whole application keeps documents off servers: the application’s code and configuration determine whether data is transmitted, and remote PDFs may involve cross-origin requests or a proxy. The maintainer discussion that raises this question is not a blanket security certification: PDF.js maintainer discussion.
