As of 17 October 2026, no storm had been named in the official UK 2026/27 storm list. That does not mean the UK has had no bad weather. Storm naming is reserved for forecast weather likely to cause disruption serious enough to justify an amber or red warning, so ordinary autumn rain, showers or strong local gusts may remain unnamed.
Mid-October is also early in the shared storm season, which runs from early September to late August. There is no calendar deadline for the first name, and the available evidence does not support predicting when it will arrive.
Why hasn’t the UK had any named storms yet?
The immediate reason is that, by 17 October 2026, the Met Office had not judged any forecast system to meet the UK’s impact-based naming threshold. The 2026/27 list contains 21 names—Austen, Boelo, Chloe, Dano, Evelyn, Finn, Gwendolyn, Heather, Ivy, Jade, Kilian, Laoise, Miriam, Nicola, Olaf, Phelim, Ruban, Shaun, Theo, Vesna and Wende—but no date-named or date-of-impact fields had been filled.
A name is not assigned simply because a low-pressure system exists or winds feel strong in one place. The Met Office, Met Éireann and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) name a storm when forecast disruption or damage could warrant an amber or red warning. Strong winds are the most common trigger, but exceptional rain with a flood risk or heavy snow can also qualify.

Is the UK storm season late?
No. The UK, Ireland and Netherlands use a storm season that starts in early September and ends in late August. The 2026/27 list was launched on 1 September 2026, so a quiet start in mid-October is within normal seasonal timing rather than evidence that the naming system is running late.
Names do not arrive on a fixed timetable. In the previous UK season, seven storms were named between October and April:
| Storm | Date named |
|---|---|
| Amy | 1 October 2025 |
| Benjamin | 22 October 2025 |
| Claudia | 10 November 2025 |
| Bram | 8 December 2025 |
| Goretti | 6 January 2026 |
| Chandra | 26 January 2026 |
| Dave | 2 April 2026 |
That spread shows why the first name cannot be inferred from the calendar. A season can begin with no named storm and still become active later in autumn, winter or spring.

What wind speed gets a storm a name?
There is no single UK wind-speed number that automatically produces a storm name. The decision combines the expected severity, the likelihood of impacts and the warning level that may be needed. A system with very strong winds over sparsely populated areas might not meet the same threshold as a somewhat weaker system expected to cause widespread damage, travel disruption or danger to life.
The same impact-based approach applies to rain and snow. A slow-moving depression bringing significant rainfall and flooding, or a snow event likely to cause major disruption, can be named even when wind is not the dominant hazard. Conversely, unsettled weather, frequent showers or isolated damaging gusts can occur without a name if the overall forecast does not justify an amber or red warning.
How the UK, Ireland and Netherlands decide who names a storm
The three national weather services form a western European naming group and share an alphabetical list. When the criteria are met, the service expecting the greatest or earliest impact normally names the system. The partner services then keep that name when the storm affects their countries.

This means a system can be named outside the UK and still arrive here under its original name. It also means that “no UK-list name yet” is not the same as “no severe weather anywhere in Europe”; another European naming group may use a separate list for the same weather system.

A recognisable name lets broadcasters, emergency agencies, local authorities, businesses and households follow one set of warnings and safety advice. Eoin Sherlock, Head of Forecasting Division at Met Éireann, said on 1 September 2026: “Naming storms helps Met Éireann in our mission to protect life and property through the provision of world-class weather, climate, and flood services.” He also said: “We know that naming storms makes it easier for people to track important and up to date forecast and safety-related information as we can see from the levels of traffic and activity through our website and across social media platforms during storm events.”
How unusual is a season with few names?
Storm counts vary substantially from one season to another. Met Éireann’s overview recorded five named storms affecting its area in 2025/26. Across the 11 seasons since the naming initiative began, the record is “87 storms across 11 seasons — Met Éireann, 2026”. The low point was “four storms in 2022/23 — Met Éireann, 2026”, while the high was “fourteen storms in 2023/24 — Met Éireann, 2026”.

The Met Office says there is no evidence of a positive or negative recent trend in the number or intensity of windstorms. Therefore, the absence of a name by 17 October neither demonstrates a climate trend nor guarantees a quiet winter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When will the first UK storm be named?
No reliable date can be given from the current information. Naming depends on a specific forecast system reaching the impact threshold, and forecasts become more certain only as the event approaches. The first name could arrive later in autumn, during winter or in spring, or the season could remain relatively quiet.
For the live position, check the Met Office UK Storm Centre and its current 2026/27 list before relying on any earlier status. A later update may add a name after this 17 October snapshot.

Does no named storm mean the weather is unusually calm?
No. The naming list measures whether forecast impacts justify a coordinated severe-weather message; it is not a daily gauge of how windy or unsettled the whole country feels. Local gales, heavy showers, flooding or snow can occur without a name when the expected national or regional impact remains below the warning threshold.
It is also possible for severe weather elsewhere in Europe to have a name from a different naming group while the UK list remains empty. Season-to-season comparisons should therefore consider the number of names, first and last dates, which service named each system, the dominant hazard and the warning level or observed impacts—not raw counts alone.
