Handoff usually fails because one of its required conditions is missing: both devices are not using the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is off, Handoff is disabled, the app does not support Handoff, or the source device is locked or too far away. Check those conditions in that order before changing hardware or buying an accessory.
Also identify the symptom correctly. Handoff moves an open task in a supported app from one Apple device to another. Copying text, images, or other content between devices is Universal Clipboard, a related Continuity feature with overlapping prerequisites but separate compatibility requirements.
What Handoff is supposed to do
Handoff lets you begin an activity on one Apple device and continue it on another nearby device. Apple describes it this way: “With Handoff, you can start work on one Apple device, then switch to another nearby device and pick up where you left off.” — Apple Support, published June 10, 2026.
It transfers an active task, not a general mirror of your iPhone screen. For example, you might open a Safari page, compose a Mail message, edit a Pages document, or work in Maps on your iPhone and then continue that task on your Mac. The app must support Handoff, and the same app must be installed on the receiving device.

If your problem is that copied text or a photo does not paste on the other device, troubleshoot Universal Clipboard instead of assuming the missing Handoff icon is the cause. The two features can stop working for the same account, connectivity, or software reason, but they are not the same operation.
Run this prerequisite check first
Before looking for a deeper cause, verify every item in this table on both devices.

Apple documents these prerequisites in its Handoff instructions. A failure in any one row can make Handoff appear to be missing even when the devices otherwise work normally.

Turn Handoff on using the correct settings path
Apple has changed the names and locations of these controls across iOS and macOS releases. Use the path that matches the labels on your device.
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Open AirPlay & Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff; the wording depends on the iOS version and regional guide.
- Turn on Handoff.
The iPhone User Guide shows both label variants: AirPlay & Continuity or AirPlay & Handoff.

On a newer Mac
- Choose the Apple menu and open System Settings.
- Select General.
- Open AirDrop & Continuity or AirDrop & Handoff.
- Enable the Handoff option.
Apple’s instructions for macOS Ventura 13 and later use System Settings. Some releases display AirDrop & Handoff rather than AirDrop & Continuity.
On an older Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
- Click General.
- Enable the Handoff option in the General pane.
If you cannot find the exact wording, search the General settings for “Handoff.” Do not treat a different label as proof that the feature is unavailable.

Make the task visible to Handoff
Handoff only advertises a live activity. Open the supported app on the source device, start or resume the task, and leave that app open in front. Locking the iPhone, switching to another app, or closing the document can remove the activity that Handoff needs to offer.
Apps Apple lists as examples
Apple names Calendar, Contacts, FaceTime, Keynote, Mail, Maps, Pages, Numbers, Reminders, and Safari as examples of Handoff-enabled apps. Some third-party apps also implement Handoff, but support is app-specific rather than guaranteed for every app.
Confirm that the same app is installed on the receiving device. Handoff cannot open an app that is absent from the Mac or iPhone, even if the source app itself supports the feature.

Where to look on the Mac
With the iPhone unlocked and the task active, look for the Handoff app icon in the Mac’s Dock. You can also press Command-Tab to open the App Switcher and look for the Handoff app icon there. Select it to continue the task.

If no icon appears, return to the prerequisite table rather than repeatedly opening and closing the app. If the icon appears but selecting it fails, note that as a different symptom: discovery is working, while task continuation is failing.
Follow the complete troubleshooting sequence
Use these steps in order. They begin with the explicit Handoff requirements, then test the task itself, and only afterward move to compatibility and general software troubleshooting.
- Check the Apple Account. On each device, open the Apple Account section in Settings or System Settings and verify that the account identifier is the same. An account used only for some services is not enough if the devices are signed in to different Apple Accounts.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Check the controls on both devices. Handoff needs both radios enabled; turning on only one does not satisfy the requirement.
- Enable Handoff. Use the iPhone and Mac paths above. Recheck after a software update because settings labels and organization can change.
- Test a known supported app. Use an Apple-listed app such as Safari or Mail. Make sure it is installed on both devices, open it on the source device, and start a clearly active task.
- Keep the source device unlocked and nearby. Leave the iPhone awake and unlocked while testing. Keep it close to the Mac. Apple’s core Handoff checklist says “nearby”; related Mac and Universal Clipboard instructions quantify proximity as within 10 metres (30 feet).
- Check the Mac’s Handoff entry point. Look in the Dock and then press Command-Tab. If the icon appears, select it once and wait for the receiving app to open.
- Check compatibility, update, and restart. Review Apple’s Handoff requirements for the specific models and operating-system versions. Install available Apple software updates, then restart both devices. If a VPN is active, inspect its configuration because Apple says VPN settings that prevent local networking can interfere with some Continuity features.
These actions are supported checks, not a guaranteed repair for every failure. Apple does not publish a single diagnostic decision tree that explains every Handoff failure mode.
Use the symptom to narrow the problem

These comparisons help isolate the failing condition; they are practical observations, not Apple-confirmed causes for a particular direction or app.

Do not confuse Handoff with Universal Clipboard
Universal Clipboard carries copied content between nearby Apple devices. It relies on overlapping Continuity prerequisites, so the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, proximity, updates, and local-network access can matter. However, it has its own compatibility list and does not display a Handoff task icon.
Apple’s published Universal Clipboard requirements include an iPhone 5 or later with iOS 10 or later, and a Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later or another Mac model introduced in 2012 or later with macOS Sierra 10.12 or later. Those figures come from Apple’s Continuity features and requirements page and apply to Universal Clipboard; they are not a complete Handoff compatibility list.
If copy and paste is the symptom, first copy a small item, keep both devices nearby and unlocked, and paste promptly. Then follow Apple’s Universal Clipboard support guidance, including software updates and a restart. A VPN that blocks local networking can interfere with this related feature as well.

Handoff compatibility depends on the particular Apple device and operating-system combination. Apple’s current Handoff article points owners of older devices to the system-requirements information, but the requirements page that specifies the model and version figures above is for Continuity features such as Universal Clipboard. Do not copy those Universal Clipboard minimums into a claim that every listed model supports Handoff.

If the device is below the required version, toggling settings or changing the network cannot add support that the hardware or software does not provide.

VPN and local-network checks
Apple specifically warns that VPN settings preventing local networking can interfere with some Continuity features. If you use a VPN, temporarily disconnect it for a controlled test or review its setting for local-network access. Do not assume that every VPN causes a problem; the relevant issue is whether its configuration blocks the devices from communicating locally.
After changing a VPN setting, repeat the same test with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, the source device unlocked, and one supported app in the foreground. This controlled approach distinguishes a local-network restriction from an app or account problem.
When the checks do not restore Handoff
Record the exact pattern before seeking further Apple support: the device models and operating systems, whether the same Apple Account is confirmed, which direction fails, which supported apps were tested, whether the icon is absent or present, and whether Universal Clipboard is also affected. This information is more useful than simply reporting that “Continuity is broken.”
