Handheld gaming PCs can cost more than consoles because they combine a complete battery-powered computer, high-refresh display, controls, cooling system and portable enclosure in one compact product. A console maker can also make money after the sale through games and platform services, while many handheld-PC makers rely more heavily on the hardware purchase itself.

That explains the pricing incentive, but it does not mean every console is subsidized or every handheld PC is more expensive. Prices vary by model, region, generation and sale date, so the meaningful comparison is between specific products with similar performance and features.

What you are paying for in a handheld gaming PC

A handheld gaming PC is not simply a laptop processor with a gamepad attached. It is a tightly integrated portable computer that must fit its computing hardware, memory, storage, screen, controls, speakers, wireless radios, cooling and battery into a small enclosure that you can hold for hours.

The ROG Xbox Ally X illustrates the specification level behind a premium model. ASUS lists a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and an 80Wh battery, alongside its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor (ASUS announcement, June 8, 2025). Each of those parts contributes to the bill of materials, engineering work and quality-control burden. A larger battery costs more and adds weight; a faster display needs more graphics power; and a more capable chip needs cooling that can remove heat without making the device uncomfortable or excessively loud.

On a living-room console, the manufacturer can spread the cost of a larger chassis, power supply and cooling path over a stationary box. A handheld has to solve the same thermal and electrical problems in a much smaller volume, while also including a screen and input hardware that a television console does not provide.

Component integration raises design and manufacturing costs

  • Compute: The processor and graphics engine must deliver playable frame rates at a restricted power level rather than drawing unlimited power from a wall outlet.
  • Memory: System memory is shared between the operating system and games, so capacity and bandwidth affect both responsiveness and graphics performance.
  • Storage: An internal SSD adds cost but is important when modern PC games occupy tens or hundreds of gigabytes.
  • Display: A 1080p, 120Hz panel such as the one ASUS specifies for the Ally X is a higher-value part than a basic low-refresh screen, and it can increase power consumption.
  • Controls: Sticks, triggers, buttons, haptics and their surrounding structure must survive repeated movement in a device that is also being carried in bags and cases.
  • Battery and charging: A larger battery improves endurance but increases material cost, weight and shipping complexity. Charging circuitry must safely support high power in a small enclosure.
  • Thermals: Fans, heat pipes, vents and custom motherboard layouts are needed to keep sustained performance within safe temperatures.

Compact performance is a set of trade-offs

There is no single specification that determines whether a handheld is good value. Increasing one capability often places pressure on another. A faster processor can improve frame rates, but it may shorten battery life or require louder cooling. A larger battery can extend play time, but it adds mass. A sharper or faster display improves image quality and motion clarity, but it consumes more energy and can make the graphics processor work harder.

Valve describes the Steam Deck OLED as using a more efficient APU and a larger battery than the LCD version, and advertises 30–50% more battery life. That percentage is Valve’s product claim, not an independent benchmark, so actual endurance depends on the game, brightness, frame-rate target, operating mode and wireless use.

Two configurations show how the specification mix changes price

Model Processor Memory Internal storage Battery Source and date
ROG Xbox Ally X Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme 24GB 1TB SSD 80Wh ASUS official announcement, June 8, 2025
ROG Xbox Ally Ryzen Z2 A 16GB 512GB 60Wh ASUS official announcement, June 8, 2025

The Ally X configuration costs more to build because it combines a higher-tier processor, more memory, twice the listed storage and a substantially larger battery. The table does not by itself establish retail prices or real-world performance; it shows why two devices in the same family can target different price brackets.

Platform economics make the sticker price behave differently

The most important difference from a conventional PC purchase is what happens after the hardware sale. Omdia analyst James McWhirter wrote in 2024 that Valve earns the majority of its post-sale revenue through software sold on Steam, while other handheld makers depend more heavily on revenue earned when the hardware is purchased. That is a difference in business model, not proof that every console or handheld is sold below cost.

A company that controls a game storefront, online service or subscription can view the device as the entry point to future transactions. It may choose a lower hardware margin when it expects users to buy games and services over several years. A manufacturer selling a Windows-based handheld without the same control over a single store has less certainty about those future receipts, so the initial hardware price has to carry more of the product’s costs and desired margin.

Omdia estimated that 19.3 million dedicated handheld gaming hardware units were sold through to consumers worldwide in 2023. The figure is an estimate. Its 2024 analysis forecast 29.3 million units by 2028; that is a forecast, not a measured result. A larger market can improve manufacturing scale, but the existence of a forecast does not guarantee that a particular model will be cheaper.

Why a console can look cheaper at checkout

A console is usually sold as a fixed platform with a small number of standardized configurations. Developers target the same hardware for years, and the platform owner can coordinate the operating system, storefront, controller support and certification process. That narrow design target simplifies the buying decision and can help the platform holder plan production and software revenue.

A handheld gaming PC is expected to behave more like a general-purpose computer. Buyers may install games from several storefronts, use desktop applications, connect peripherals, adjust power limits and troubleshoot compatibility issues. Supporting that flexibility requires more software layers and more combinations to test. It is valuable to buyers who want PC freedom, but it is part of what the price buys.

Console and handheld prices also reflect different product tiers. A current premium handheld with a large battery, high-refresh display and generous storage should not be compared with an entry-level console, an older console generation or a temporary clearance price. The fair question is whether the handheld’s extra portability and PC capability are worth its price relative to the console experience you would otherwise buy.

Price examples need dates and markets attached

Published prices show why a universal “handheld premium” is misleading. ASUS announced US prices of $699 for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme ROG Ally and $599 for the Ryzen Z1 configuration in May 2023. Valve’s official Steam Deck OLED page displayed a US starting price of $789 at the time of the cited review of that page. These products come from different generations and have different specifications, so the figures are context rather than a controlled comparison. Prices, discounts and availability can change.

No same-date, same-market console price is established by these figures, so they cannot support a precise universal premium. For a real buying decision, record the prices of the exact handheld and console you can purchase in your region on the same day.

Compare the experiences, not just the processors

Performance matters, but a handheld’s value depends on how that performance is delivered. Compare the following factors at realistic handheld power settings rather than relying only on a chip’s desktop specification.

Frame rates and image quality

Check the games you actually intend to play, the resolution you expect and whether you are comfortable using an upscaler or a 30-frame-per-second target. A 120Hz panel does not make every game run at 120 frames per second; it gives the display more refresh headroom when the hardware can supply it.

Battery endurance

Look for results measured in the games and settings you use. Manufacturer claims, including Valve’s 30–50% OLED-versus-LCD figure, should be treated as claims rather than guarantees. Brightness, wireless networking, frame-rate limits and power profiles can change runtime substantially.

  • Wi-Fi 6E

Weight and comfort

Battery capacity and cooling hardware affect mass and balance. A device that is comfortable for a short session may feel tiring during a long one. Check the location of the controls, grip shape, fan noise and whether the charging cable can be used without blocking your hands.

Operating system and game access

A handheld PC can provide access to PC storefronts, mods, desktop utilities and a wide range of settings. That flexibility can also mean launchers, compatibility layers, driver updates and occasional troubleshooting. A console generally offers a more controlled interface and predictable certification path. Decide whether you value broad access or a simpler appliance-like experience.

Storage and expansion

Internal SSD capacity determines how many large games you can keep installed. Expansion options can reduce the initial cost, but loading behavior, card performance and model compatibility should be checked before assuming an inexpensive card will perform like the internal drive.

Budget for the ownership costs around the device

The purchase price is only one part of the decision. A handheld PC may require a case, dock, charger with suitable output, larger storage or a replacement SSD depending on how you use it. Confirm compatibility with the exact model: ports, physical clearances, charger requirements and disassembly procedures differ between generations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game and service costs also differ by platform. A console purchase may be followed by an online subscription for multiplayer, while a PC buyer may choose among several stores and sales. Do not assume that a lower hardware price remains lower after games, subscriptions, accessories and storage are included. List the purchases you expect over the first year and compare the totals in your currency.

A practical way to decide whether the premium is justified

  1. Set a same-day, same-region price baseline. Write down the current prices of the exact handheld configuration and the console model you are considering. Include sales tax and any required accessories.
  2. List your priority games. Check storefront availability, controller support, anti-cheat restrictions and whether each title runs acceptably at handheld power limits.
  3. Choose a performance target. Decide whether you want a stable 30fps, a 60fps target, high settings, a high-refresh display or simply the ability to play away from a television.
  4. Estimate portable sessions. Consider how often you will play away from an outlet and whether the device’s battery, weight and charging time fit those sessions.
  5. Price the complete setup. Add storage, protection, charging and any dock or external display connection you will actually buy.
  6. Value the operating system. If installing software, changing settings and managing several launchers sounds useful, the PC premium may buy meaningful freedom. If you want a controlled interface with minimal maintenance, a console may provide better value even when its specifications look less flexible.

Common misconceptions about the price gap

“Every console is sold at a loss”

That is too broad. The evidence supports different hardware-and-software revenue strategies, not a blanket claim about every console maker’s hardware margin.

“The processor explains the entire price”

It does not. The display, memory, SSD, battery, cooling system, controls, motherboard design, operating-system support and manufacturing all contribute.

“A higher refresh rate guarantees better performance”

Refresh rate describes what the panel can display, not what the processor can render. Game settings and power limits determine actual frame rates.

“A launch price is today’s price”

It is not. The 2023 ROG Ally figures and the Steam Deck OLED page price cited above belong to specific dates and markets. Check the current listing before treating either as a buying benchmark.

The bottom line for buyers

Handheld gaming PCs cost more than some consoles because they package a capable computer, battery, display, controls and cooling into a portable device, while often relying more on the upfront hardware sale than on a single controlled software ecosystem. The premium is worthwhile when you will use PC storefront access, settings flexibility and portability enough to justify the extra hardware and ownership costs. If your priority is the simplest path to a fixed library on a television, a console may deliver better value. Compare matching models, dates, regions and total ownership costs rather than assuming either category is always cheaper.
