Rockstar did work on a plan for GTA IV’s non-player characters to have homes and daily routines, including commuting to work. Former Rockstar technical lead Obbe Vermeij says the idea became problematic and generated many bugs; he also questioned whether that level of realism added enough for players. The account does not establish that console hardware forced the decision.
What Rockstar originally wanted for GTA IV’s NPCs
Producer Leslie Benzies wanted pedestrians to have individual lives: places to live and routines that took them to work in the morning. That vision went beyond making people appear busy on the street. It proposed a more persistent daily pattern for the game’s NPC population, according to Vermeij’s retrospective account as reported by GamesRadar+ and iXBT Games.

Why the schedule system was set aside
It became difficult to make reliable
Vermeij says the team worked on the idea for a while, but it became problematic. His concise description was: “There were so many bugs.” Neither report specifies what those bugs were, how they arose, or when the team stopped pursuing the feature.
The added realism did not seem worth the cost
Vermeij also questioned the player value of giving every pedestrian an individual life and timetable. In his view, players could accept NPCs that felt somewhat fake or shallow. That is his design judgment, not a conclusion established by a player study.

Read together, his comments point to a practical design trade-off: persistent personal routines promised a more convincing city, while the team faced implementation problems and uncertain gameplay benefit. That is an interpretation of his reported remarks, not a measured comparison of two finished systems.

GamesRadar+ published its report on August 16, 2026, and iXBT Games followed on August 17, 2026. Both reports attribute the story to the same Edge Magazine interview with Vermeij, so they are not independent technical confirmation.
