GTA VI’s ESRB rating tells buyers that the game includes content such as nudity; it does not guarantee that every storefront or payment provider will permit its sale. The rating and a platform’s distribution rules answer different questions. The available evidence confirms GTA VI’s rating, but does not establish why any particular indie game was delisted—or prove that the same nudity standard was applied differently.
What GTA VI’s rating actually says
The ESRB lists Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+ for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Its descriptors include Nudity and Strong Sexual Content, along with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Strong Language, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases.

Those labels disclose the kinds of content associated with the rating; they do not provide a scene-by-scene account. The ESRB says descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a rating or may interest or concern consumers, and are not intended as a complete listing. Its definitions distinguish “Nudity” (“Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity”) from “Partial Nudity” (“Brief and/or mild depictions of nudity”). “Strong Sexual Content” means “Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity.” These are category definitions, not descriptions of particular scenes in GTA VI. How the rating is decided
For physical games, the ESRB’s process starts with publisher disclosures: a completed questionnaire and video covering typical gameplay, missions, cutscenes, and the most extreme content. Publishers must also disclose pertinent locked content. At least three trained raters review the material and recommend a rating category, descriptors, and interactive elements; the ESRB evaluates and confirms the recommendation and finalizes a rating summary. This process explains what the rating is for: communicating content and age guidance. It does not establish that an ESRB rating overrides a storefront’s own rules for what may be listed or sold.
Why an age rating does not settle storefront access
There are three separate decisions that can affect a game’s availability:

- Rating: A rating authority classifies content and communicates age guidance. GTA VI’s ESRB listing establishes its M rating and descriptors.
- Storefront distribution: A shop can set rules about which content it lists, sells, hides, or makes unavailable. The evidence available here does not establish current Steam or itch.io policy or show that an ESRB rating grants an exception to a storefront rule.
- Payment processing: A payment provider may impose conditions on transactions. That is distinct from both a game’s rating and a storefront’s decision, even if a platform’s decision is attributed to payment concerns.
So a mature rating is not a universal permission slip. A game can be accurately rated and still encounter a separate distribution or payment restriction.
What is—and is not—established about indie-game delistings
An August 2025 statement from the advocacy group AFEE reported restrictions or loss of access affecting mature-rated games on Steam and itch.io, and attributed the changes to payment-provider pressure. AFEE’s statement on game delistings and content restrictions is a dated account of the controversy, not an official statement from either storefront.

That account does not, by itself, verify the reason for each affected title or show that nudity alone caused a removal. The available evidence also does not establish that GTA VI is exempt from a rule applied to indie games, or that the specific storefront and payment policies involved are identical across cases. Without a platform notice or other case-specific primary evidence, “delisted” should not be treated as a single, fully explained outcome: a title might be removed from sale, hidden from discovery, or restricted in a particular territory.

To determine whether two games were treated differently, compare the records for the actual titles—not just their broad labels. A useful comparison needs:
- The rating authority, territory, age category, and descriptors for each game.
- The particular content identified by the publisher or in a platform notice.
- The exact storefront rule cited, including its version or date.
- Whether a payment provider was cited, and by whom: the platform, processor, or an outside group.
- The actual outcome—such as removal from sale, reduced discoverability, or a territorial restriction.
The available sources do not identify two specific indie titles with enough case-level evidence for that comparison. The defensible answer is therefore limited: GTA VI has an ESRB M rating with a Nudity descriptor, while an age rating does not itself determine whether a storefront or payment provider will allow a game to be sold.
