A smart plug is useful when you want to switch a suitable appliance remotely, put it on a schedule, or include it in a smart-home routine. It can make a simple on/off device—such as a lamp—easier to control, but it is not automatically an energy saver, and its features and safe load limits depend on the exact model.
What can a smart plug do?
A smart plug sits between a wall outlet and an appliance, allowing a compatible app, controller, or automation to switch power on or off. Depending on the model and platform, it may also support schedules, timers, voice control, and energy readings. Those functions are not universal: check the product specifications for the exact plug and the controller you intend to use.
Remote switching
Remote control is handy when an appliance’s normal operation is a straightforward on/off action. A lamp is a common example: you can switch it without walking to the outlet, or turn it off when you are away. Australian government guidance notes that some conventional appliances can be made remotely controllable this way. The appliance still needs to be suitable for being switched by cutting its power.

A schedule or timer can switch a compatible load at a chosen time. Some systems also use occupancy or time-of-use pricing as part of broader automation. This can help manage when equipment runs, but it does not prove that a particular household will use less energy or pay a lower bill.

Energy readings
Some plugs report power or energy use for the connected load. For example, TP-Link lists real-time and historical energy monitoring for its US-market Kasa EP25P2 model. That is a model-specific capability, not a feature to assume across all smart plugs. An energy reading describes measured use; it does not itself reduce consumption.
When is a smart plug worth having?
- You want convenient control of a simple load: a lamp or another appliance designed to operate when power is supplied may be a good fit.
- You want a device to run only at certain times: a schedule can avoid leaving a suitable appliance powered unnecessarily, provided that switching it this way is safe.
- You want to include a device in a routine: check that the specific plug, app, assistant, and controller support the automation you have in mind.
- You want usage information: choose a model that explicitly reports energy or power, and confirm that the feature is available in the app or controller you will use.
ENERGY STAR’s Smart Home Energy Management Systems criteria treat plug-load monitoring and control as one part of a broader system that can include schedules and other services. That context matters: buying a single plug is not the same as installing a complete energy-management system.

Will a smart plug lower your electricity bill?
Not necessarily. A schedule may reduce unnecessary run time for a compatible appliance, and a larger home energy-management setup may help shift consumption to a different time. Whether that changes your bill depends on the appliance, its operating pattern, your electricity tariff, and the plug’s own standby consumption. The cited official material does not establish a typical saving, payback period, or guaranteed bill reduction from buying one plug.

Automation equipment adds standby power. Australian government guidance recommends considering the system’s consumption, and also notes that a home network may have device-capacity or configuration limits. ENERGY STAR’s current US Smart Home Energy Management Systems criteria specify a maximum standby power of 1.0 watts for the plug-load monitor/control device category in that program. This is a program criterion, not a measurement of typical smart plugs or an estimate of savings.

What should you check before using one?
Appliance safety and load rating
Compare the plug’s rated load with the appliance’s electrical requirements, and follow the plug maker’s instructions. Cutting power is not a substitute for an appliance’s intended controls or a safe shutdown sequence. Take particular care with heaters, motors, compressors, medical or safety-critical equipment, and appliances that require an orderly shutdown; whether a plug is appropriate depends on the product’s rating and the appliance’s requirements.
Restrictions can be model-specific. Bosch warns that its cited smart plug should not be used for unsupervised switching of devices such as irons, with power strips or extension cables, or with certain electronic loads that have high inrush current. Bosch notes that switching such loads can cause premature wear or unreliable operation. Do not assume those exact instructions apply to every brand or model—read the manual for the plug you own.

App, controller, and connectivity
Check that the plug works with your intended app, voice assistant, controller, and network setup. Compatibility may depend on the region and configuration, and the number of devices a network can support may be limited. Also check where advanced features are exposed. D-Link’s support information for its referenced Matter plug says basic on/off control is available through Matter, while advanced monitoring and threshold features require its own app. A Matter logo or general platform compatibility does not guarantee that every feature is available through every controller.

Verify the exact model number, plug type, voltage, electrical rating, and local approval for your country. Product names and capabilities can differ by market. TP-Link’s EP25P2 listing, for example, is for a US-market model and identifies UL certification for that product; those details should not be generalized to other regional versions.

How to decide whether you need one
- Name the task: decide whether you need remote switching, a schedule, an automation, or energy reporting.
- Check the appliance: confirm that power can be safely cut and restored in the way you plan to use it.
- Match the feature to the platform: verify that the exact plug supports the feature in your chosen app or controller, not only in a manufacturer’s app.
- Check electrical and regional details: confirm load rating, voltage, plug type, certification or local approval, and the model number.
- Consider the whole system: account for connectivity and standby power, especially if you plan to add several smart-home devices.
A smart plug makes sense when the convenience or control solves a specific problem and the connected appliance is suitable. If you do not need remote switching, schedules, automation, or usage readings, a conventional plug may be all you need.
