If Gboard has stopped capitalizing the first letter of a sentence, check Auto-capitalization first. On Android, open Gboard Settings, go to Text correction, enable Auto-capitalization, and test in a second app. If the setting is already enabled, restart the phone and update Gboard before you clear its cache, reset its data, or reinstall it. Those later steps are progressively more disruptive.
iPhone and iPad troubleshooting is different. Google’s iOS instructions explain how to switch back to Gboard and how to remove and re-add it in the iOS keyboard list, but they do not document the Android Text correction > Auto-capitalization route as an iPhone-specific fix. Use the platform-specific steps below rather than assuming an Android menu exists on iOS.
What the symptom can mean
“Gboard stopped capitalizing” can describe several different behaviors:
- The first letter after a period or at the beginning of a new sentence remains lowercase.
- The keyboard no longer changes a lowercase
ito an uppercaseIwhere you expect it to. - Capitalization works in one app but not another.
- Normal tapping behaves correctly, but swipe typing produces unexpected capitalization or fails to capitalize.
- Gboard is not actually active; another keyboard has appeared without you noticing.
There is no single, officially established cause for every capitalization failure. Google’s Android troubleshooting page provides a recovery sequence rather than one universal diagnosis. Start with the setting, then move from low-disruption checks to app recovery. If the behavior occurs only in one text field, compare it with another ordinary text-entry app before blaming Gboard itself; the available Google guidance does not establish a universal compatibility rule for every app.

Quick decision guide
| Situation | First action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Android never capitalizes new sentences | Check Gboard Settings > Text correction > Auto-capitalization | Re-enables Gboard’s automatic capitalization behavior if it was switched off. |
| The setting is enabled, but the problem began recently | Restart the phone and update Gboard in Google Play | Refreshes the system and installs available app fixes without deleting preferences. |
| Gboard appears frozen or behaves incorrectly everywhere | Force stop Gboard, reopen it, then clear its cache | Restarts the app process and removes temporary cached files. |
| Cache clearing did not help | Clear Gboard storage/data | Resets Gboard to its default state; preferences may need to be configured again. |
| The problem started after an update or the app is damaged | Reinstall Gboard, or uninstall updates where Android offers that option | Replaces the installed app version. A secondary keyboard is needed first if Gboard is the only keyboard. |
| iPhone or iPad has switched away from Gboard | Use the keyboard’s globe menu and select Gboard | Returns typing to Gboard without changing Android-style settings. |
| Gboard is missing, shown as “null,” or will not load on iOS | Remove Gboard from the iOS keyboard list and add it again | Rebuilds Gboard’s registration with iOS. |
Fix missing capitalization on Android
1. Check Auto-capitalization before changing anything else
Open any app with a text field so that Gboard appears. Google describes opening Gboard Settings by touching and holding the comma key and moving to the Settings icon. Depending on your phone and Gboard layout, you may instead reach the same settings from the toolbar’s three-dot menu or the keyboard’s Settings icon.
- Bring up Gboard in a text field.
- Touch and hold the comma key, or open the toolbar menu, and select Settings.
- Tap Text correction.
- Find Auto-capitalization.
- If it is off, turn it on.
- Type a short test containing a period followed by a space, then a new word. Test in a second app as well.
Google’s troubleshooting instructions also mention turning Auto-capitalization off when it causes unwanted text changes. That advice addresses the opposite symptom. If your problem is missing capitals, first verify whether the switch is off; do not disable it as a supposed fix for lowercase sentences.
Menu labels and locations can vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, language, and Gboard release. If you cannot find the switch, confirm that the keyboard shown on screen is Gboard and look for Text correction rather than searching the phone’s general Settings app for an identically named option.

When Auto-capitalization is enabled, use Google’s two least-disruptive checks: restart the device and check for a Gboard update in Google Play. The Android help page recommends these before app-recovery actions. A restart reloads the keyboard process and related input services; an update can replace a faulty installed build. Neither step is guaranteed to correct capitalization, and neither should be presented as proof that the setting was the cause.

- Save unfinished work in your open apps.
- Use the phone’s power menu to restart it.
- After the phone returns to the home screen, open Google Play.
- Search for Gboard and install an available update, if one is offered.
- Test capitalization in at least two ordinary text fields.
If the Play Store shows no update, continue with the existing version rather than repeatedly reinstalling it. Record whether the failure occurs in every app or only one; that distinction determines the next branch.
3. Force-stop Gboard and clear its cache
Force-stopping is useful when the keyboard process is stuck. Clearing the cache removes temporary files without intentionally resetting your configured dictionary and preferences.
- Open the Android system Settings app.
- Tap Apps, App management, or the equivalent app-list entry.
- Select Gboard. If it is not visible, use the app-list search.
- Tap Force stop and confirm.
- Open a text field again so Android starts Gboard.
- If capitalization is still wrong, open Storage or Storage & cache and choose Clear cache.
- Reopen a text field and repeat the period-and-space test.
Android’s exact labels differ by manufacturer and version. Look for the app’s storage screen, not a similarly named keyboard preference. Clearing cache should not be confused with clearing storage or data: the latter is a reset.
4. Clear Gboard data only after the reversible checks
Google states that clearing Gboard data or storage resets the app to its default state. Use this only after checking Auto-capitalization, restarting, updating, force-stopping, and clearing the cache. The reset can remove customized preferences and learned behavior, so expect to restore options such as layout, theme, languages, or other personal settings afterward.

- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear storage, Clear data, or the equivalent label.
- Read the confirmation dialog; do not select it if you want to preserve Gboard’s current configuration.
- After confirming, open Gboard and set your preferred languages and options again.
- Verify Text correction > Auto-capitalization and test typing.
The names and warnings can vary, but the consequence is the same: this is not merely a temporary-file cleanup. If you rely on a customized keyboard setup, note your important preferences before resetting.
5. Reinstall Gboard, or remove an update when appropriate
Reinstallation is a later option for an installation that remains faulty after a reset. Google’s Android instructions specifically warn that if Gboard is the device’s only keyboard, you should install a secondary keyboard first. Otherwise, removing Gboard could leave you without an on-screen keyboard for entering passwords, searches, or setup information.
- Install or enable a secondary keyboard before removing Gboard if no other keyboard is available.
- Open Google Play, find Gboard, and uninstall it or use the device’s available uninstall action.
- Restart the phone if Android requests it.
- Install Gboard again from Google Play and enable it in the system keyboard settings if prompted.
- Open Gboard Settings, confirm Auto-capitalization, and run the same multi-app test.
If the capitalization failure began immediately after a Gboard update, Google’s troubleshooting page also lists uninstalling updates as an option on Android devices that expose that control. The option is not present on every phone or installation. It reverts the app to the version supplied by the device or system image, so use it only when the timing strongly points to the update and you can update again later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Google’s iPhone and iPad help covers keyboard selection and re-registration rather than an Android-style Auto-capitalization switch. Do not assume that the Android path Gboard Settings > Text correction > Auto-capitalization is a verified iOS solution.

Select Gboard when another keyboard is active
- Tap a text field to open the iOS keyboard.
- Touch and hold the globe key, or tap it repeatedly if that is how your keyboard presents the selector.
- Select Gboard from the keyboard list.
- Type in the same field and then in another app to see whether the behavior follows Gboard.
If Gboard is not listed, continue with the keyboard-list repair below. Google’s iOS setup instructions also place keyboard options in the Gboard app under its keyboard settings; those options are separate from Android’s Text correction screen.
Remove and re-add Gboard in iOS Settings
Google directs users whose keyboard appears as “null,” is missing, or needs to be restored to rebuild it through iOS:
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Edit if necessary, remove Gboard, and confirm.
- Choose Add New Keyboard.
- Select Gboard from the available keyboards.
- Return to a text field and choose Gboard with the globe key.
This process addresses a keyboard that is not being selected or registered correctly. It does not establish that iOS has the same capitalization toggle documented for Android. If capitalization is wrong only in one iOS app, compare another text field before removing and re-adding the keyboard.

Capitalization fails everywhere
When every ordinary text field shows lowercase sentence starts, check Auto-capitalization, restart, update, and then follow the Android recovery sequence. On iOS, first verify that Gboard is selected and present in the keyboard list. A system-wide symptom makes a keyboard setting or keyboard registration more plausible than an isolated app field, but it still does not identify one confirmed root cause.

Only one app or field is affected
Type the same sentence in a notes app, a browser search box, and a messaging field. If two apps capitalize correctly and one does not, keep the keyboard intact while you inspect that app’s own editor, language, or formatting behavior. The available Google guidance does not define a universal Gboard incompatibility rule, so describe this as an app-specific observation rather than a confirmed Gboard bug.
Only swipe typing behaves incorrectly
Test by tapping letters instead of swiping. If tapping capitalizes normally but swipe typing does not, document the input method, language, device model, Android or iOS version, and the apps in which it occurs. A Google Android Community post uses the wording “Gboard incorrectly capitalizing first letter when I tell it not to (swipe typing)”. That is one user’s description of unwanted capitalization, not evidence of how common the symptom is or proof of a current universal cause. Treat your result as a specific swipe-typing symptom and use tapping as a temporary workaround while you troubleshoot.
It capitalizes when you do not want it to
The remedy is different from missing capitalization. On Android, open Gboard Settings, choose Text correction, and review Auto-capitalization. Google’s instructions mention turning that option off when it causes unwanted changes. Test after changing it, and remember that disabling the option also removes the automatic capitalization you may want at sentence starts.

| Fix | Disruption | Reversibility | What you risk losing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check or change Auto-capitalization | Minimal | Fully reversible | Nothing beyond the selected setting. |
| Restart and update | Low | Reversible in normal use | No intended Gboard preferences reset. |
| Force stop | Low | Reversible when Gboard is reopened | No intended settings reset. |
| Clear cache | Low to moderate | Temporary files are rebuilt | No intended preference reset. |
| Clear data/storage | High | Not a one-tap undo | Gboard returns to defaults; preferences may need to be restored. |
| Reinstall or uninstall updates | Highest | Requires reinstalling or updating again | App version and local configuration can change; a secondary keyboard may be required first. |
This order follows the practical principle of changing the smallest amount first. Do not jump directly to clearing data when the Auto-capitalization switch is simply off, and do not reinstall while you have not yet checked whether another keyboard is active.
What to record if none of the steps works
Before seeking device-specific support, record enough detail for someone else to reproduce the behavior:
- Phone or tablet model and Android or iOS version.
- Gboard version and whether the issue began after an update.
- Whether Auto-capitalization is enabled on Android.
- Whether tapping, swipe typing, or both are affected.
- At least two apps in which you tested, plus the exact text field that fails.
- Whether restarting, updating, force-stopping, clearing cache, clearing data, or reinstalling changed anything.
- Whether another keyboard produces the same result.
This record separates a Gboard-wide symptom from an app-specific editor problem and prevents repeating disruptive resets without new information. If another keyboard capitalizes correctly everywhere, the comparison is useful evidence that the remaining investigation should focus on Gboard’s configuration or installation. If every keyboard behaves the same way in one app, the app or its text field deserves attention instead.
