Games often look blocky or soft when they render below a display’s native resolution and then get enlarged to fill the screen. But visible pixels may also be the intended look of a pixel-art game, and scaling, upscaling, or sharpening settings can change how an image appears. Start by checking the game’s render resolution before considering hardware changes.

First, decide whether the pixels are intentional

Pixel-art and retro games use visible blocks as part of their design. On a high-resolution display, ordinary scaling can make those blocks look soft. Integer scaling instead enlarges each source pixel by a whole-number amount, keeping edges crisp while preserving the deliberately pixelated style. NVIDIA explains why scaling can blur pixel art, and AMD describes integer scaling.

If a game that used to look clear has changed, or several unrelated games look worse, treat that as a possible settings change rather than assuming the look is intentional. “Pixelated” can mean blocky low-resolution detail or jagged edges; “blurry” can describe softened edges. Those symptoms can overlap, so note what you actually see.

Check the game’s render resolution

Look in the game’s Graphics or Display settings for Resolution or Render resolution. Compare it with the display’s native resolution. A game rendered at a lower resolution and enlarged to fit the screen has less source detail, even if the display itself is high-resolution.

Microsoft says most games with Fullscreen or Exclusive fullscreen modes let players change render resolution in the game settings. Borderless-windowed games may not expose an effective in-game output resolution control, so check the Windows display resolution as well. Menu names and available controls vary by game and platform. See Microsoft’s guidance on game resolution and Auto SR.

Inspect render scale and upscaling

Some games have a Render scale, Resolution scale, or super-resolution option separate from the display resolution. A reduced render scale can improve performance, but it also starts with a lower-resolution image. If quality is the priority, compare the current setting with native rendering or a higher-quality option.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Upscaling tools reconstruct or enlarge an image that was rendered at lower resolution; they do not guarantee the same detail as native rendering. Microsoft notes that its Auto SR feature is limited to supported devices and resolutions and can affect fine text or user-interface elements. If text or UI looks worse, turn Auto SR off for that game or choose another supported resolution. NVIDIA describes Image Scaling as spatial and non-temporal, unlike DLSS, which can use temporal data and AI; those are vendor descriptions, not a guarantee that one option will look better in every game. Details are in NVIDIA’s Image Scaling overview.

Choose how the image fits the display

When the game’s aspect ratio or resolution does not match the display, the scaling mode affects the result:

Dell 27 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2726HG - 27-inch FHD (1920x1080) Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
  • Preserve aspect ratio: keeps the image’s proportions and may leave bars at the sides.
  • Full panel: stretches the image to fill the display, which can distort proportions if the source shape differs.
  • Integer scaling: enlarges pixels in whole-number steps for crisp pixel art, where supported.

These modes change fit and appearance; they do not add detail absent from a low-resolution source. AMD explains the differences between preserve-aspect-ratio and full-panel scaling in its display scaling documentation.

Use sharpening and supersampling selectively

Sharpening can make softened edges appear clearer, but it is not the same as recovering all detail lost when a game starts with a low-resolution image. AMD’s Radeon Image Sharpening is intended to restore clarity softened by other effects. Availability depends on compatible hardware and software; see AMD’s Radeon Image Sharpening information.

Virtual Super Resolution takes the opposite approach to low-resolution rendering: on compatible systems, a game can render above the display’s native resolution and the image is then downscaled. This may improve the appearance of edges, but it uses additional graphics resources and is not a universal fix. AMD documents the feature and its compatibility considerations here.

A practical troubleshooting order

  1. Identify the symptom. Decide whether the game is intentionally pixel art, newly blocky, soft, or distorted by stretching.
  2. Compare resolutions. In the game’s Graphics or Display menu, check resolution and render resolution against the display’s native resolution. For borderless-windowed games, check Windows display resolution too.
  3. Check render scale and upscaling. Compare the current render scale with native rendering or another available quality mode. If supported Auto SR makes fine text or UI worse, disable it for that game or select another supported resolution.
  4. Set the scaling mode for the image you want. Use integer scaling for crisp pixel art if available. For a mismatched aspect ratio, choose between preserving proportions with bars and stretching to fill.
  5. Try optional image processing only if needed. Test sharpening or supersampling on compatible hardware, bearing in mind their performance and compatibility trade-offs.
  6. Change one setting at a time. Compare the same scene after each change so you can identify which setting affected the symptom.

If several games still look wrong

Write down the affected games and platform, the display’s native resolution, each game’s resolution and render scale, active upscaling or sharpening settings, and any recent driver or display changes. That information helps narrow down whether the issue is game-specific or shared across the system. These symptoms alone do not establish that a monitor, graphics card, cable, or other hardware needs replacement.
