Game studios pay attention to trends because commercial development is uncertain: a visible hit can suggest that players want a particular kind of experience and that a market may support it. But attention is not proof of demand, and copying a successful game does not guarantee a similar result. A trend is most useful as a hypothesis to test against your audience, your team’s capabilities, and the cost of building and supporting the game.

Why do game studios chase trends?

Game development combines creative ambition with business risk. A studio has to decide where to spend limited time and money without knowing in advance whether a game will find an audience. A visible hit can look like evidence that an audience exists, that a format has commercial potential, or that a publisher might be receptive. Those are understandable reasons to investigate a trend, but they are not proof that a new game in the same category will succeed.

A 2015 paper by Saiqa Aleem, Luiz Fernando Capretz, and Faheem Ahmed, Empirical Investigation of Key Business Factors for Digital Game Performance, discusses the importance of business factors to game performance. Its accessible abstract does not provide a trend-chasing success rate, however, and it does not establish that imitation improves a game’s odds.

Studios also have choices besides abandoning an existing direction to pursue a fashionable one. They may build on games, audiences, or capabilities they already have, try a different genre, or extend an intellectual property into more than one game. Those choices depend on a studio’s circumstances; a market signal alone does not tell a team which is best.

What Unity’s developer survey does—and does not—show

Unity’s 2025 Unity Gaming Report reports results from a Cint survey of 300 developers conducted in 2024. When asked about growth strategies, respondents selected:

  • Maximizing an existing game: 62%.
  • New ideas in a different genre: 23%.
  • New ideas in the same genre: 10%.
  • Developing intellectual properties into multiple games: 5%.

These are reported choices in that survey, not a ranking of which strategies succeed. They do show that growth planning is not synonymous with chasing the latest category: most respondents selected maximizing an existing game, while fewer selected new ideas in the same genre.

The same report lists several strategies respondents used to reduce risk: efficiency tools (45%), monetization and live operations (24%), publisher support (11%), avoiding overhiring (10%), refusing debt (6%), and staying small (4%). These figures describe survey responses; they do not prove that any one tactic works for every studio, or that the choices are mutually exclusive. The report also draws on Unity platform data and additional event surveys, so these specific Cint survey figures should not be generalized to all developers or studios worldwide.

How is market awareness different from designing by hype?

Market awareness asks whether a trend reveals a player need or a workable opportunity. Designing by hype treats visibility itself as a reason to change direction. The difference is the quality of the connection between the market signal and the game you plan to make.

  • Awareness: “Players appear to value this experience. Which players, and what need does it meet?”
  • Hype: “This format is getting attention, so we should make one too.”
  • Awareness: “Can our game offer a distinct reason to choose it?”
  • Hype: “A successful game proves this category is a safe bet.”

A popular game can demonstrate that some players are interested in a type of experience. It does not show how large the reachable audience is for your particular game, whether those players will switch, or whether your team can deliver the expected experience at an affordable cost. Market attention is a prompt for investigation, not a substitute for it.

There is also a crowding risk. If many studios respond to the same visible signal, they may be competing for the same players. A new entrant then needs more than category membership: it needs a reason players would make room for it alongside the games they already choose.

Why are so many studios making live-service games?

Live service is a useful case study because it can promise continuing revenue and an ongoing relationship with a community, while also requiring continued work after launch. GDC has reported that some publishers promoted live service as the future during the pandemic and later abandoned the approach. Its subsequent report considered the subject through industry survey data, interviews, and conference talks. That history illustrates why an approach that appears attractive in one period should not be treated as a permanent market rule.

GDC’s 2025 State of the Game Industry account says developers recognized financial and community-building benefits, but also raised concerns about declining player interest, creative stagnation, monetization practices, burnout, and market oversaturation. In the survey of more than 3,000 developers and industry professionals, 16% of respondents said they were working on a live-service game, 13% were interested in doing so, and 41% were not interested. GDC also reported that 33% of surveyed AAA developers were working on one. These results describe survey respondents, not every studio worldwide; the overall survey was reported with a ±2% margin of error.

The operational commitment matters as much as the launch

A live-service concept should be judged as an ongoing production commitment, not just as a launch format. A team considering it needs to ask whether it can sustain the content, maintenance, and community work implied by the direction. The apparent commercial upside is only one part of the decision; ongoing obligations affect staffing, scope, and how much time remains for other work.

GDC interviewed game industry veteran Scott Hartsman about competition in live service. He said a new game needs “something super compelling” because players have an effectively vast range of choices for their free time. He also said that two or three leading games in some genres captured 66% to 80% of activity and revenue in those genres. That range is Hartsman’s observation, not an independently verified statistic for the whole games market; he noted that genre segments differ.

The practical question is not simply whether players spend time in a category. It is why a particular group would spend some of its time on your game instead of an option it already knows and enjoys. If the answer is only “because this format is popular,” the concept has not yet established a convincing point of difference.

How can a game studio tell if a trend is worth following?

Treat the trend as a hypothesis and check it against six questions before committing to a major change in concept or scope. This is a decision aid inferred from the industry’s documented uncertainty, competition, and scope concerns; it has not been experimentally evaluated as a method.

1. Name the audience, not just the category

Be specific about which players you believe the game serves. “People who play this genre” is not yet a useful audience definition. Ask what those players want, what frustrates them, or what experience they cannot currently get from the options they already use. Separate evidence from the people you hope to reach from general industry discussion: attention to a trend does not by itself show that your intended audience wants your version of it.

Write down the player need in plain language before deciding on features. If the need can only be described as “players want more of this trend,” clarify what “more” means and how it would improve their experience. That exercise helps keep the concept centered on players rather than on a label.

2. Establish why the game would be chosen

List the existing alternatives a player could spend time on, then state what your game would offer that matters to the intended audience. The distinction need not be a wholly new genre. It might be a particular experience or approach, but it should be concrete enough that a player could understand the reason to choose it. Hartsman’s observation about free-time competition is a reminder to evaluate a new game against the player’s existing choices, not against an empty market.

  • 【Better Experience & Pain Relief】Our keyboard arm rest is beneficial to alleviate the soreness caused by direct contact and friction between your arm and a hard desk surface, reducing the risk of wrist fatigue or carpal tunnel. The soft texture of memory foam can evenly distribute the pressure around your wrists and provide good support with just enough give.
  • 【Helpful in Multiple Scenarios】Whether you're working, studying, writing, typing, gaming, this keyboard and mouse rest combo is an essential accessory to add comfort and support to your hands and wrists. It’s also a great gift for men, women, family, friend, coworker, gamer, teacher, etc.

If the proposed distinction is difficult to explain without leaning on a competitor’s success, the concept may be borrowing its appeal rather than establishing its own. Go back to the audience need and ask what the game can deliver credibly.

3. Check team fit and continuing workload

Map the work implied by the idea against the skills and production capacity the studio actually has. Include the work that continues after launch where the format calls for it: content, maintenance, and community demands can make a project very different from a one-time build. Ask whether the team has both the ability and the appetite to do that work without compromising the rest of the project.

Small teams can have an iteration advantage, but it does not eliminate resource limits. In Unity’s 2025 report, Justin Miersch, founder and game/level designer at 314 Arts, said a small team can “iterate, fix, or change entire game systems” quickly compared with large AAA organizations where changes pass through multiple departments and checks. That is his account of a potential advantage, not evidence that small teams can take on any scope or that smallness guarantees success.

4. Make the financial exposure explicit

List the investment required and the assumptions the project depends on to pay off. Then ask how much of the commitment can be reversed if evidence does not support the idea. A studio’s response to risk may involve efficiency, publisher support, staffing discipline, debt avoidance, or choices about the scope of the project; Unity’s survey records developers reporting a range of such responses, not a universal formula.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate what must be true for the game to be viable from what would merely be nice to have. If the idea only works with a large audience, extensive content, or a long operating commitment, name that exposure before treating the trend as an opportunity.

5. Decide what would count as evidence

Before running a small test, write down the uncertainty it is intended to reduce. Choose a test that can reveal whether the target players understand or value the core idea, rather than one that merely confirms the team can build a feature. Define in advance what result would justify further investment, what result would stop the experiment, and when the decision will be made.

A useful test is allowed to disprove the hypothesis. If every possible result can be interpreted as a reason to continue, it is not giving the team a meaningful basis for a decision. This article’s framework is a practical application of the available discussion of uncertainty, not a validated prediction method.

6. Protect scope from fashion-led additions

For every trend-inspired change, ask which player problem it solves and what the studio would remove or delay to make room for it. If there is no clear player benefit, the change may be adding cost and complexity simply because competitors or investors are discussing the trend. Unity’s report lists keeping a project organized, in scope, and on time among developers’ reported challenges, which makes scope discipline a concrete production concern rather than a stylistic preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat each exciting possibility as a feature commitment. Keep the initial idea, the evidence supporting it, and the decision to expand it distinct. That makes it easier to evaluate whether new scope follows a player need or merely follows attention.

What should a studio compare when it has several options?

Put the alternatives side by side rather than judging each one by how much attention it is receiving. A comparison makes trade-offs visible and exposes gaps in the case for a trend-led pivot.

Decision question What to establish
Audience evidence Which intended players want the experience, and what supports that belief beyond general industry attention?
Distinctiveness Why would those players choose this game beside the options they already have?
Production fit Can this team make the game and sustain the work the direction implies?
Financial exposure What investment and assumptions are required, and how much can be reversed?
Scope What must be added, delayed, or removed to pursue the idea?
Testability What small test could change the team’s mind, and when will it decide?

Do not fill gaps in this comparison with market visibility. If audience evidence or production requirements are unknown, record them as unknown and decide how to investigate them. A trend can be worth exploring without being ready to dictate the full design or budget.

What can the available industry figures tell you?

Unity’s and GDC’s surveys are useful descriptions of what their respondents reported in particular years. Unity’s figures come from a 300-developer Cint survey conducted in 2024 and published in its 2025 report. GDC’s 2025 survey account covers more than 3,000 developers and industry professionals. Neither source establishes how many studios chase trends, how often studios pivot because of hype, or whether copying a hit improves a game’s odds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when reading a percentage. A reported strategy is not a measured outcome; interest in a format is not proof that a studio should enter it; and a survey response is not a forecast that the same pattern will persist. The Unity and GDC figures offer context for how respondents describe growth, risk, and live-service work—not a shortcut for a studio’s own audience and production decisions.
