Game consoles cost more than their component lists alone would suggest: the retail price also reflects design and development, manufacturing, labor, shipping, and the business of building a platform. Some manufacturers accept slim or negative hardware margins and expect game and service sales to contribute later; others seek to earn more on the hardware itself. Component costs and model features matter, too, which is why prices can rise rather than fall over time.
What goes into a console’s price?
A modern console combines a custom system design with a processor, memory, storage, cooling, power delivery, a controller, and a chassis. More capable components or more built-in storage can increase the hardware cost, but the parts are only one part of the final price. Development, assembly, labor, logistics, marketing, distribution, and relationships with game publishers all shape the economics of a console platform. The World Intellectual Property Organization’s history of PlayStation describes these broader costs and business considerations.
Retail prices do not reveal a model’s exact bill of materials or manufacturing cost. Companies do not generally publish complete, audited per-unit cost breakdowns for current consoles, so a precise claim about what a particular system costs to make is not established by its price tag.

Sometimes, but it is not a universal rule. In the traditional platform model, a manufacturer may price hardware at a slim margin or below cost to attract players. A larger installed base can support later revenue from game sales, subscriptions, and services. Hardware discounts can also make it easier to expand that player base.

Microsoft said in a June 25, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement that consoles are typically sold for less than they cost to make. That describes a common industry approach, not the audited margin on every console or a guarantee that every manufacturer uses the same strategy. TrendForce likewise describes software and subscriptions as historically important to console profitability. Nintendo, by contrast, said in 2025 that it aimed to maintain a hardware margin on Switch 2, even if it was slimmer than software margins. As Nintendo vice president Bill Trinen put it, “As you add more technology into a system, especially in this day and age, that drives additional cost,” in comments reported by Ars Technica.
Why can console prices rise instead of falling?
Memory and storage costs can change the equation
Consoles do not automatically get cheaper as they age. On June 25, 2026, Microsoft said storage and memory prices for its Xbox consoles had risen more than 2.5 times, and announced global Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026. This is Microsoft’s stated explanation for its own price changes; it should not be treated as proof that component costs drove every other manufacturer’s pricing.

A December 2, 2025 TrendForce analysis projected that memory modules would make up 21–23% of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware costs in 2026 and that memory would exceed 35% of total bill-of-materials costs for Sony and Microsoft by 2026. Those are TrendForce estimates and projections, not audited manufacturer disclosures. TrendForce said higher memory costs could constrain mid-cycle price cuts and forecast a 4.4% year-over-year decline in global game-console shipments in 2026; that shipment figure is a forecast, not a reported result.

Manufacturers may choose to reduce prices or run promotions as a console’s audience grows, but rising component costs can make cuts harder to sustain. Pricing also depends on the company’s platform strategy and the market in question. A price change announced for one brand or region should not be generalized to every console or retailer.

Why does a premium model cost more?
A higher-priced tier can include more capable hardware, extra storage, or features intended to improve supported games. Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement set the PS5 Pro’s U.S. launch recommended retail price at $699.99, with launch on November 7, 2024. Sony listed a 2 TB SSD and a GPU with 67% more compute units and memory 28% faster than the then-current PS5, alongside advanced ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling. Sony said the Pro could render gameplay up to 45% faster; that is the company’s claim, and results and feature support vary by game.
The launch price is not the current recommended price. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement set new U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, including $899.99 for PS5 Pro. The same announcement listed these recommended prices for other regions:

These are Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, not a guarantee of what a particular retailer charges. Taxes and local pricing practices can also affect the amount a buyer pays. Sony’s price announcement gives the regional figures; its PS5 Pro announcement documents the separate 2024 launch price and cited hardware claims.
How to compare the real cost of two consoles
Compare the total you would actually spend, not just the headline price. The right option depends on the games you play and the accessories or services you need.
Best Value
- Slim Design, players get powerful gaming technology packed inside a sleek and compact console design.
- 825GB of storage, keep your favorite games raeady and waiting for you to jump in and play
- Ultra-High Speed SSD, maximize yoru play sessions with near instant load times for installed PS5 games
- Integrated I/O, the custom integration of the PS5 console's systems lets creators pull datat from the SSD so quickly that they can design games in ways never before possible
- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
- Compare prices for the same region and date. Separate a manufacturer’s recommended price from a retailer’s current offer, and check whether taxes are included.
- Match the hardware tier to your use. Consider performance, storage capacity, and whether the games you play support the premium model’s features.
- Check disc versus digital configuration. A digital-first model may cost less upfront, but a separately purchased disc drive can change the comparison. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch configuration listed its Ultra HD Blu-ray drive as a separate purchase.
- Add the costs you will actually incur. Include any extra storage, disc drive, replacement or additional controller, games, and subscription you want. Do not count optional purchases you do not need.
- For used or refurbished systems, inspect the terms. Microsoft identifies certified refurbished and previously played consoles as lower-upfront-cost options. Check the specific seller, condition, stock, warranty, and return policy before buying.
For historical perspective, WIPO reports that the original PlayStation launched in the United States at $299 in 1995, $100 below Sega Saturn at the time. That example illustrates how launch pricing can be strategic; it is not a useful direct price comparison with today’s hardware without accounting for inflation, capabilities, and market conditions.
