Technology companies may be more durable when they pair digital speed with something customers can verify in the real world: trusted suppliers, human expertise, physical products, or reliable company knowledge. That is a strategic argument, not a proven rule about which companies will survive. Its practical test for a founder is straightforward: what supports the trust your digital product asks customers to place in it?

What “both worlds” means for a technology company

Building in both worlds does not necessarily mean making hardware and software. It means connecting a digital product to a credible foundation beyond the interface: a verified supplier network, a physical product and human guidance, or company documentation that supports AI answers.

The distinction matters because a polished digital experience can make discovery and service faster, but speed alone does not establish that a supplier is reliable, a recovery product is effective, or an AI answer is correct. Conversely, a physical business may have valuable expertise or assets but lack the digital tools to make them easier to find and use at scale.

The digital economy includes physical technologies and infrastructure, software and networks, digital providers, and traditional sectors changed by digital applications, as Wits University describes in its digital economy overview. That breadth provides context for the idea; it does not establish that hybrid companies will outlast digital-only ones.

Three ways the digital layer can rest on a real-world foundation

Supplier discovery backed by verification

Manufacturing buyers can use an online marketplace to find suppliers and request quotes, while the credibility of that marketplace depends in part on whether its suppliers are actually qualified. Hardware Secrets’ August 20, 2026 article reports that Haizol representative Viktor Michel-Häggström said the platform verifies suppliers in person and lists more than 800,000 factories. These are claims attributed to a company representative in that article; they have not been independently confirmed here.

The useful distinction is between a digital directory and a sourcing process that explains how supplier credentials are checked. For a buyer, the presence of a supplier profile is not itself proof of capability. Ask what was verified, by whom, when, and whether the checks cover the equipment and certifications relevant to your order.

A physical product paired with digital guidance

The same article describes Quit Kit as a physical product paired with a digital 21-day guide. Its founder, Matt von Boecklin, presents the combination as support for recovery from kratom withdrawal. The account is a company founder’s description, not independent evidence that the product or guide is effective. Ingredient and treatment claims should not be treated as established medical facts on that basis.

The broader business model is easier to assess without assuming health benefits: a product may be paired with instructions or ongoing guidance that help customers understand how to use it. The digital component can organize that experience; the physical product remains a separate part of the offer, with its own safety, quality, and evidence requirements.

AI answers grounded in company documentation

A customer-service AI system can be connected to a company’s own documentation rather than relying only on general language patterns. In Hardware Secrets’ article, Wonderchat co-founder and CEO Vera Sun says the platform ties responses to company sources and reports that one enterprise client resolved 92 percent of support questions without a human agent. The figure is attributed to Sun and has not been independently verified; it should not be read as a typical result or a guarantee.

Documentation can give an AI system a factual basis, but it does not automatically make every answer correct. The source material can be incomplete or outdated, and the system still needs clear boundaries for uncertain questions and a route to human help when an answer could materially affect a customer.

How founders can test whether the combination is credible

Use these questions to examine the business model before claiming that it benefits from combining digital and physical capabilities:

  • What foundation supports the digital promise? Identify the real-world asset, expertise, product, supplier relationship, or source material customers depend on.
  • How is that foundation verified? Specify the checks, their timing, and who is accountable for carrying them out. A claim of verification is more useful when customers can understand what it covers.
  • What does software make faster or easier to scale? Separate the work the digital layer improves—such as discovery, quoting, guidance, or answering routine questions—from the work that still requires physical operations or human judgment.
  • Who takes responsibility when something fails? Make clear who handles a faulty product, an inaccurate answer, or a supplier problem. A digital interface should not obscure accountability.
  • Does ongoing service support the underlying product? Recurring service revenue can complement a physical product, but the incentives should remain aligned with customer needs rather than simply extending the relationship.

This last question connects to Michael A. Cusumano’s discussion of hybrid product-and-service strategy in Staying Power: Six Enduring Principles for Managing Strategy and Innovation in an Uncertain World. The book is relevant background, but its presence does not prove that every company should adopt a hybrid model.

What the “both worlds” argument does—and does not—show

The examples illustrate a strategic possibility: digital tools can extend the reach of physical operations, products, and institutional knowledge. They do not establish that all successful technology companies need a physical component, that a hybrid model is automatically more trustworthy, or that the reported company metrics are independently validated.

The more useful conclusion for a technology business is conditional. When customers must trust something beyond the screen, make that underlying foundation visible, verifiable, and accountable. Digital speed is valuable; its credibility depends on what it connects customers to.
