Flagship phones become more expensive when costly components, tighter supply, and product decisions combine—but a component-cost increase does not automatically become the same-sized increase at the checkout.
What a higher flagship price actually means
“Phone prices are rising” can describe several different figures, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Retail price: the manufacturer’s list price or the price a retailer or carrier charges in a particular country, currency, tax regime, storage tier and promotion.
- Bill of materials (BOM): an estimate of the components in one specified configuration, such as a processor, display, cameras, memory, storage and radio parts.
- Total production expense: the BOM plus assembly, testing, factory overhead, packaging and other costs involved in making and distributing the device.
- Commercial costs and profit: software development, research and development, marketing, logistics, retail-channel costs, taxes, warranty obligations, financing and the company’s margin.
A BOM is therefore a component-cost estimate, not a retail price, a complete cost-to-make figure or a direct measure of profit. Retail prices also vary by launch market, storage capacity, connectivity variant, taxes, currency, carrier terms and discounts.
Which parts make a flagship expensive?
Premium phones concentrate expensive technology in a small enclosure. The largest cost categories vary by model and generation, but the application processor or system-on-chip, display, camera system, cellular baseband and radio-frequency hardware, memory and storage are recurring drivers.

| Component area | What the phone maker is paying for | Why its cost can move |
|---|---|---|
| Application processor/system-on-chip | CPU, GPU, image processing, AI acceleration and power-management functions | A new manufacturing node, larger die, faster graphics or additional accelerators can raise supplier prices. |
| Display | OLED panel, touch layer, cover glass, driver circuitry and high-refresh-rate features | Higher brightness, resolution, adaptive refresh, larger size and specialized materials add cost. |
| Camera system | Image sensors, lenses, stabilization hardware, periscope modules and camera controllers | More sensors, larger sensors, optical zoom and mechanical stabilization increase the module bill. |
| Cellular baseband and RF | Modem, power amplifiers, filters, antennas and other radio-frequency components | New network generations, additional bands, mmWave support and regional variants require more or costlier parts. |
| Memory and storage | DRAM for active tasks and NAND flash for apps, photos and system data | Commodity-market supply, capacity allocation and the amount installed in each storage tier affect the cost. |
These categories interact. A generation that adds 5G may need a new modem, additional RF components, antenna changes and a more capable processor at the same time. A model that moves from 8GB to 12GB of RAM or doubles storage has a different BOM from the same phone with less memory, even if the exterior is unchanged.
Why memory is the clearest current pressure point
Prices rose sharply in the memory market
Counterpoint reported that DRAM prices increased by more than 50% quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026, while NAND flash prices rose by more than 90% quarter over quarter. Those figures describe memory-market prices, not a 50% or 90% increase in phone retail prices.
IDC estimated that memory represents about 10–15% of the BOM of a high-end flagship. A large change in that portion of the BOM can therefore be material without dictating the final price of the entire phone. The arithmetic is not a pass-through rule: manufacturers may absorb part of the increase, reduce discounts, change the memory configuration or alter the launch price.

IDC’s 2026 analysis described artificial-intelligence data-center demand for high-bandwidth memory as drawing manufacturing capacity and investment toward higher-margin enterprise components. Smartphone makers primarily use conventional DRAM and NAND, so they can face tighter availability and higher bids for the capacity they need. This is better understood as a strategic reallocation of capacity and demand than as a claim that AI alone caused every price change.
IDC expected 2026 DRAM supply to grow 16% year over year and NAND supply to grow 17%. Those were expectations, and IDC characterized them as below historical growth norms. If demand grows faster than available output, phone makers compete for supply; if output catches up, the pressure can ease.

How a component shock reaches the retail price
A supplier invoice is only the first step. A manufacturer chooses how much of a cost change to absorb and how much to expose to customers.
| Stage | Decision or cost | Possible result for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Component sourcing | Negotiated prices, allocation commitments, inventories and supplier mix | Vendors with stronger purchasing leverage may experience a smaller or later increase. |
| Product design | RAM and storage capacity, display specification, camera hardware and radio support | The phone may keep its price but offer a slower upgrade, less memory or a different component. |
| Launch strategy | List price, regional pricing and the size of introductory discounts | The list price can rise, or the list price can stay flat while launch promotions become smaller. |
| Portfolio management | Older-model pricing, production volume and replacement timing | An older model may remain expensive longer, or a successor may arrive later. |
| Sales channel | Retail margins, carrier subsidies, taxes, currency and financing terms | The out-of-pocket amount differs even when the manufacturer’s list price is unchanged. |
TrendForce’s December 2025 outlook said memory costs could lead brands to raise new-model launch prices, change older-model pricing or product lifecycles, and slow or reduce upgrades. These are potential responses, not confirmed changes for every brand or phone.

IDC modeled the effect of the memory shortage on the broader smartphone market. Its figures are scenario forecasts, not observed price changes and not announcements from a particular flagship maker.
| IDC scenario for 2026 | Projected global smartphone ASP change | Projected market contraction | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moderate downside | 3–5% increase | 2.9% | A modeled market-level outcome if component pressure is meaningful but manageable. |
| Pessimistic downside | 6–8% increase | 5.2% | A more severe modeled outcome; it is not a guaranteed flagship price hike. |
“Average selling price” includes the overall smartphone market, not only ultra-premium models. It also blends different countries, brands, tiers and configurations. A particular flagship could move by less, more, or not at all.

| Example | Reported estimate | What it demonstrates | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, 8GB+256GB, Sub-6GHz configuration | About $469 estimated BOM, Counterpoint, 2023 | The SoC, display and camera subsystem were among the major cost areas in that configuration. | This is a 2023 component estimate, not the retail price, total manufacturing expense or profit. |
| iPhone 12 mmWave configuration versus iPhone 11 | About 21% higher estimated component cost, Counterpoint, 2021 | The application processor, 5G baseband, display and 5G RF components were important areas of increase. | This is a historical, configuration-specific comparison and does not establish current-generation costs. |
The examples cannot be used as a current head-to-head ranking: they come from different years, designs, currencies and configurations. A fair comparison requires the same launch market, storage tier, connectivity variant and price type.

Supply leverage and financial capacity
IDC described Apple and Samsung as better positioned than some vendors because of cash reserves and long-term supply agreements, while noting that they still face pressure. That does not guarantee stable prices or reveal the exact terms of any company’s contracts. It means their purchasing power and ability to carry inventory may differ from that of a smaller vendor.
Margin and portfolio choices
Two companies can face the same memory quote and make different decisions. One may protect its advertised price by accepting a lower margin. Another may preserve margin through a higher launch price, fewer discounts or a lower memory tier. A third may delay a refresh until supply improves. Product mix also matters: a company selling more high-storage models is exposed to memory costs differently from one whose base configurations use less storage.
Regional pricing
Currency movements, import duties, value-added tax, carrier subsidies and local retail agreements can make a phone appear to rise in one country while remaining unchanged in another. Always identify the market, currency, storage tier and whether the figure is a manufacturer list price, a retailer price or a financed monthly payment.
How to tell whether a flagship really became more expensive
- Compare the same price type. Put launch list price beside launch list price, or current street price beside current street price. Do not compare a discounted outgoing model with a new model’s list price.
- Match the configuration. Check RAM, storage, SIM and connectivity support, including whether a regional mmWave version is involved.
- Match the market and date. Record country, currency, tax treatment and launch date. A later exchange-rate change can mimic a product-price increase.
- Audit the specification change. Look for a new processor, display technology, camera module, modem, RF system, memory capacity or storage type that could alter the BOM.
- Separate price from promotion. A higher price may reflect a smaller launch discount rather than a full list-price change. Conversely, a trade-in credit can reduce the buyer’s out-of-pocket cost without changing the phone’s price.
- Check the total payment. For financing, add every installment, upfront fee and required service condition. A lower monthly figure does not necessarily mean a lower total cost.
What buyers can do when prices rise
Keep a phone longer
Extending the replacement cycle spreads the cost over more years, provided the device remains secure, its battery is acceptable and software support continues. It reduces how often you pay for a new flagship; it does not reduce the underlying cost of the next model.

Choose a lower storage tier carefully
Because memory and storage are separate parts of the BOM, selecting less storage can lower the purchase price, but only if it meets your photo, video, app and offline-media needs. Cloud storage subscriptions can add recurring costs and may not replace fast local storage for large files or travel.
Consider an older flagship
An outgoing model can provide much of the same display, camera and processor experience at a lower street price. Compare remaining software-support years, battery condition, warranty and network-band compatibility rather than looking only at the discount.
Use financing with the total in view
Financing can spread a large payment across a budget period, and IDC identified it as a possible market response. It does not lower the phone’s cost by itself. Compare the total payable amount, interest or fees, required carrier plan, early-upgrade conditions and what happens if you trade in before the term ends.
Evaluate refurbished devices
A refurbished flagship may reduce the upfront price, but inspect the seller’s warranty, return window, battery-health standard, replacement-parts policy, water-resistance disclaimer and software-support horizon. Those terms vary by seller and country.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes when reading phone-cost stories
- Turning a BOM into profit: a $469 estimated BOM does not mean the manufacturer earned $469, because retail, development, distribution, support and other costs remain.
- Passing through a component percentage: a 50% DRAM increase does not make a phone 50% more expensive; memory is only part of the BOM and pricing decisions differ.
- Confusing forecasts with announcements: IDC and TrendForce scenarios describe possible market outcomes, not confirmed list prices.
- Ignoring configuration: storage, RAM, modem and regional radio support can materially change a component estimate.
- Assuming one cause: memory pressure can coincide with a processor upgrade, a new camera system, currency changes or a deliberate margin decision.
Bottom line
Flagship prices rise when expensive components become costlier, supply is constrained or a manufacturer chooses a more ambitious specification—and the final retail outcome depends on bargaining power, margins, discounts, regional economics and product strategy. The 2026 memory shock is a significant pressure point, but its market statistics and forecasts should not be mistaken for a uniform, already-confirmed price increase on every flagship.
