Find Hub does not promise a separate location alert when it cannot obtain a current fix for a lost phone. Selecting the phone in Find Hub can notify the phone itself, while the owner may only see a stored last-known location—or no location at all. Those are different events.
Google’s documentation says, “The lost device gets a notification.” In context, that means the device selected in Find Hub is notified. It does not guarantee that the person searching receives a push alert when the phone later becomes locatable.
What Find Hub can report when a phone is missing
Find Hub’s result falls into three practical states. Understanding which state you are seeing prevents you from treating an old position as live or assuming that a missing alert means the service is broken.

Google describes the second state this way: “If your device’s current location can’t be found, you may still find its last known location, if available.” The wording matters: a last-known position is conditional, and Google does not define a universal age or accuracy limit for it. Treat it as the last available clue, not as live tracking. See Google’s lost-device instructions.

Why no current location may be available
A phone must have power, a way to communicate, and a functioning location setup for Find Hub to obtain a fresh fix. Google lists several conditions that can prevent that.
The phone is powered off or has no battery
A switched-off phone cannot send a new location. A depleted battery has the same result. Find Hub may retain an earlier location, but it cannot manufacture a current one while the handset is unavailable.
There is no mobile or Wi-Fi connection
Find Hub needs the phone to communicate over mobile data or Wi-Fi. A handset outside coverage, disconnected from both networks, or unable to authenticate to Wi-Fi may remain at its last known position. A weak signal can also prevent a reliable update even when a network icon is visible.
The SIM was removed
Google includes a removed SIM among the situations in which a phone may not be locatable. Removing the SIM can eliminate normal mobile-network access; Wi-Fi might still allow contact if the phone is powered on and connected.
The handset is damaged
Physical damage can disable the radio, antenna, battery, or other components needed for communication and location. Find Hub cannot remotely repair that hardware failure.

Airplane mode or Wi-Fi disabled
Airplane mode can cut off the connections Find Hub relies on. Wi-Fi being turned off is another documented reason a phone may not be found, particularly where mobile coverage is unavailable.
Why offline finding does not guarantee an alert
Offline finding can sometimes help when a phone is no longer connected, but it is not continuous live tracking. Depending on the device and settings, Find Hub may use an encrypted, stored last-online location. It can also use a crowdsourced network in which nearby participating Android devices detect a lost device or item and relay an encrypted result.

A stored location exists only if the phone previously generated one and the relevant offline-finding setup was enabled. A network detection requires another participating Android device to come near the lost phone and successfully report it. Google does not promise that every lost phone will be detected, how quickly a detection will occur, or that a current position will replace the stored one. Details on supported settings are in Google’s guide to preparing an Android device for offline finding.
This explains a common expectation error: seeing “offline finding” in settings does not mean Find Hub can locate a phone indefinitely after its battery dies, its radios are disabled, or it is isolated from other participating devices. It expands the chances of recovering a useful location; it does not create a guaranteed notification channel.
What the notification sentence actually means
Google’s lost-device procedure includes the sentence, “The lost device gets a notification.” The grammatical subject is the phone selected in Find Hub. The statement tells you what happens on that phone when the selection command reaches it; it is not a promise that the owner’s account, browser, or another phone will receive a separate location alert.

The same Google instructions distinguish that device notification from location availability. If the current location cannot be found, the owner may see a last-known location if one exists. The cited support pages do not establish that an owner always receives a push notification when a lost phone becomes locatable, nor do they specify a universal delivery delay or set of delivery conditions. Do not rely on an alert as proof that a new fix has arrived; open Find Hub and inspect the result directly.
Google does explicitly describe a notification after a lost accessory is detected on the Find Hub network. That wording concerns accessories and should not be transferred to phones as a guarantee.
Read the status label before taking action
Open Find Hub and select the missing phone. The label shown under the device gives you the most useful next branch.
“Current location” or a map position that is updating
Use the displayed position as the current result, while remembering that any map fix can become stale as the phone moves or loses connectivity. Try the available sound, secure, or other remote options promptly if you are close to the device.
A map position that is clearly a last-known location
Use it as an investigative lead: consider where the phone was at that time, who may have had it, and whether the position is consistent with your movements. Do not assume the phone is still at that address, and do not confront anyone based solely on an old map point.

“Sync recent location”
This label points to an encrypted-location synchronization problem rather than proof that the phone has no signal. Follow the account and resynchronization steps below from the Android device you are using to manage Find Hub.
“Can’t access location”
This indicates that Find Hub cannot access a usable location through the current setup. It may reflect the phone’s offline state, a configuration problem, or both. Use the reinitialization path described in the next section, then reassess what the device list reports.
Fix a “Sync recent location” problem
Google documents an out-of-sync encrypted-location condition and provides a recovery sequence. You need access to an Android device on which you can open Settings and manage the relevant Google services.
- Look at the Android device you are using to view Find Hub for an “Account action required” notification.
- Open that notification and complete the instructions Google presents for the account.
- Return to Find Hub and refresh the device list.
- Select the missing phone again and retry the sync operation.
The account action is performed on the device used to administer Find Hub; it does not remotely power on or repair the lost handset. If synchronization succeeds, Find Hub may expose a stored location that was already available to the account. It still cannot guarantee a new live fix.

Reinitialize offline-finding setup after “Can’t access location”
When Google’s Pixel support page shows “Can’t access location,” its documented setup repair uses the Android device that displays the error. The path is:

- Open Settings on that Android device.
- Open Google services.
- Select Find Hub.
- Open Find your offline devices.
- Temporarily turn off offline finding.
- Select the previous offline-finding setting again to reinitialize it.
Refresh Find Hub and check the missing phone again. These steps require a working Android device and are primarily a setup or future-readiness repair. They may not recover a phone that is already inaccessible, out of power, damaged, or outside network coverage. Google’s exact troubleshooting wording is available in Fix issues with Find Hub.
Check the phone’s prerequisites for remote actions
Location viewing and remote commands are related but not identical. Google says securing or erasing an Android device requires all of the following conditions:
- The phone has power.
- It has mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- It is signed in to a Google Account.
- Find Hub is turned on.
- The device is visible on Google Play.
If one of these requirements is absent, a secure or erase command may not complete. A command waiting in the account is not evidence that the phone has received it; it can take effect only when the handset meets the communication and account conditions. Erasing should therefore be treated as an irreversible security decision, not as a method for making a phone report its location.
A practical sequence when no alert arrives
- Open Find Hub manually. Do not wait for a push message. Select the missing phone and record whether the screen shows a current location, a last-known location, “Sync recent location,” or “Can’t access location.”
- Check the timestamp and context. A stored point may describe the phone’s earlier online state. Compare it with when you last handled the phone and avoid treating it as a live position.
- Resolve an account-sync prompt. If “Sync recent location” appears, look for “Account action required” on the Android device you are using, complete the instructions, refresh the list, and retry.
- Reinitialize offline finding if required. For “Can’t access location,” use Settings → Google services → Find Hub → Find your offline devices on the accessible Android device, turn offline finding off temporarily, and select the previous setting again.
- Try remote protection only when prerequisites are plausible. A powered, connected phone signed in to the right Google Account and visible on Google Play is the best candidate to receive a secure command.
- Protect your account and personal data. If the location remains unavailable, change credentials or review account security from a trusted device as appropriate, and avoid publishing a last-known address publicly.
- Escalate to the mobile provider if recovery appears unlikely. Ask whether the line or device can be deactivated and have the phone’s IMEI available.
When to contact the mobile provider
Google recommends contacting your mobile provider, if possible, to deactivate a phone you believe cannot be found. The provider may ask for the IMEI, a device identifier that can appear on the original packaging, purchase record, account documentation, or the phone’s own settings if you recorded it beforehand.
Deactivation helps reduce unauthorized cellular use, but it does not create a Find Hub location. It is an escalation for protecting service and account interests after the software checks have been exhausted. If the phone later reconnects, a provider block and Find Hub’s device state can affect what the handset can do, so keep records of any action you request.
What Google’s guidance does—and does not—promise
- It does say that selecting a phone in Find Hub causes the lost device to get a notification when the command reaches it.
- It does say that a last-known location may still be visible when a current location cannot be found, if one is available.
- It describes encrypted stored locations and a nearby Android-device network as conditional offline-finding tools.
- It does not provide a universal detection rate, notification delay, or accuracy percentage for lost phones.
- It does not establish that every owner receives a separate push alert when a phone becomes locatable.
Find Hub settings and supported behavior can vary by Android version, phone model, and region. Use the labels and controls shown on your own device, and consult Google’s current support pages before relying on a particular menu path.
