Learning that someone died by firearm suicide does not reliably lead a household to lock or unload its guns. Awareness and storage behavior are different signals: defensive-storage preferences, convenience, multiple firearms, accessible long guns and lack of a storage device can all leave access unchanged. Storage barriers can reduce unauthorized or impulsive access, but no single practice guarantees that a person at risk cannot reach a firearm.

Exposure is not evidence that storage changed

No published statistic establishes that being exposed to a firearm suicide causes a household to adopt safer storage. Available evidence instead measures how guns are stored, how those practices correlate with suicide outcomes, and what models project could happen if more households changed their behavior.

A household may understand the danger and still keep one or more firearms loaded or unlocked. Owners may prioritize rapid defensive access, assume an unloaded long gun is safe enough, lack a lock box or safe, or have more firearms than they can easily secure. A gun hidden in a closet or placed out of reach is still accessible to a determined child, adolescent or adult.

A 2025 case-control study in JAMA Network Open examined household firearm storage in relation to the firearm-suicide method used by suicide decedents. Its findings differed sharply by age.

Population Storage finding What it means
Adults The study found no association between locking or unloading household firearms and whether an adult suicide decedent used a firearm. For adults, the result does not show that a particular locking or unloading practice changes the method used. The authors’ interpretation emphasizes reducing access to firearms rather than relying on one storage behavior.
Adolescents and young adults Having all household firearms locked was associated with substantially lower odds that firearm suicide would be the method. Complete locking of every household firearm appears more protective for younger people than partial storage, although the study is observational and cannot prove that storage alone caused the difference.

These results do not mean locking is useless for adults. They mean that the measured adult outcome was not linked to locking or unloading in that study, while access reduction remains the practical goal. A person who cannot immediately reach a firearm has more time for another person, a crisis service or emergency intervention to help.

Earlier evidence points in a protective direction

A nationally representative mortality-followback study by Daniel C. Grossman and colleagues, published in 2004, reported lower odds of firearm suicide when firearms were stored locked rather than unlocked (odds ratio 0.39; 95% confidence interval 0.24–0.66) and unloaded rather than loaded (odds ratio 0.30; 95% confidence interval 0.18–0.49). Those are observational associations, not proof that changing storage alone prevents every suicide.

Unloading does not solve every long-gun risk

A 2023 analysis of the National Violent Death Reporting System found that people who used a long gun rather than a handgun had five times greater odds of storing the firearm unloaded before death. That finding is a warning against treating “unloaded” as a complete safety strategy: an unloaded firearm can still be accessible, and unloading practices differ by firearm type and owner.

Storage practices answer different safety problems

“Safer storage” is not one switch. Researchers and public-health agencies distinguish several barriers, each addressing a different route to harm.

Storage dimension Main risk addressed Important limitation
Locked firearm Unauthorized or impulsive access by children, adolescents, visitors or someone in crisis. A lock that does not cover every firearm leaves another gun available; the key, combination or biometric access method must also be controlled.
Unloaded firearm Reduces the chance that a person can fire immediately. It does not prevent access, and an unloaded gun may still be used if ammunition is nearby.
Ammunition stored separately Adds another delay between finding a firearm and firing it. Separate storage is only useful when the ammunition container is itself secured.
Temporary removal from the home Removes household access during a period of acute risk. Arrangements must be lawful and made with a trusted person or appropriate storage provider; this option requires planning before a crisis.

These dimensions also affect different outcomes. A study of firearm-suicide method is not the same as a study of overall suicide mortality, unintentional injury or unauthorized access. A result for adolescents cannot automatically be generalized to adults, and a result involving handguns may not describe long-gun storage.

How common are loaded and unlocked firearms?

CDC surveillance from 2021–2022 covered eight states, so its ranges are not national estimates. Among respondents, 18.4% to 50.6% reported a firearm in or around the home. Among respondents who had a firearm, 19.5% to 43.8% reported that at least one firearm was stored loaded. Among respondents with a child or adolescent in the home and a loaded firearm, 25.2% to 41.4% reported that at least one loaded firearm was stored unlocked.

What counts as safe storage under CDC guidance?

The CDC says secure storage, such as a safe or lock box, can help prevent unauthorized access and use, including by children and people at risk of harming themselves or others. It also explicitly warns that putting a firearm out of sight or out of reach is not safe storage and is not enough to prevent use by children or unauthorized adults.

  1. Unload every firearm before storage. Do not assume that an unloaded long gun or a firearm with an empty chamber is inaccessible.
  2. Lock every firearm. Use a gun safe, lock box, cable lock or trigger lock that fits the firearm and is actually engaged. Partial locking leaves an unsecured firearm as an alternative.
  3. Secure ammunition separately. Use a locked ammunition container rather than a nearby drawer, shelf or bag.
  4. Control the access method. Store keys, combinations and other opening methods where an unauthorized person cannot obtain them.
  5. Recheck the arrangement after changes. New firearms, a move, a visiting child or a change in someone’s mental-health risk can make an old storage plan inadequate.

Project ChildSafe offers safety kits, brochures and tip sheets, and the CDC points readers to a safe-firearm-storage toolkit developed with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Availability and eligibility for free materials can vary by location.

What youth modeling adds—and what it cannot prove

A 2019 JAMA Pediatrics Monte Carlo model estimated that 6% to 32% of youth firearm deaths might be prevented, depending on how strongly an intervention motivated households to lock all firearms. In one modeled scenario, moving 20% of households with unlocked guns to locking every gun was associated with an estimated 72 to 135 prevented youth firearm fatalities.

Those figures are projections based on 2015 data, not observed results from a single real-world campaign. They illustrate why complete locking is a high-value prevention target for households with children or adolescents, while avoiding a promise that a particular campaign or device will prevent a suicide.

If someone in the household may be at risk

Do not wait for a firearm suicide exposure to change storage. Treat a new warning sign, suicidal statement or major crisis as a reason to reduce access immediately. Lock all firearms, unload them, secure ammunition separately and involve another responsible adult in controlling access. When risk is acute, consider lawful temporary storage outside the home with a trusted person or qualified storage provider, and contact emergency or crisis services rather than leaving the person alone with an accessible firearm.

A lock box, safe, cable lock, trigger lock or lockable ammunition container is an access barrier—not a guarantee. The safest plan is the one that covers every firearm, prevents unauthorized opening and is maintained when circumstances change.

Why the evidence can appear contradictory

  • Different ages: The 2025 study found a clearer association for adolescents and young adults than for adults.
  • Different storage measures: Locked, unloaded, ammunition-separated and temporarily removed are not interchangeable interventions.
  • Different outcomes: Firearm-suicide method, total suicide, unintentional injury and unauthorized access measure different events.
  • Different firearms: Handguns and long guns are stored and accessed differently; the 2023 long-gun finding shows why one rule cannot be assumed to fit both.
  • Different evidence designs: Surveillance describes prevalence, observational studies show associations, and models estimate possible effects under assumptions.
