Excel worksheet headers and footers are hidden in Normal view by design; they appear in Page Layout view, Print Preview, and on printed pages. Switch to View > Page Layout or open File > Print to check them. If you’re using Excel for the web, open the workbook in desktop Excel: the web app cannot insert footers and does not display footers added in desktop Excel.
First, check the worksheet view
A header or footer may be present even when it is not visible beside the worksheet cells. Microsoft says worksheet headers and footers display only in Page Layout view, Print Preview, and on printed pages; their absence in Normal view does not mean they were deleted.
- To see them while working on the sheet, select View > Page Layout. You can also switch to Page Layout from the status bar.
- To inspect the page as it will print, select File > Print and review Print Preview.
- To return to the regular cell-focused view, select View > Normal.
Microsoft documents these instructions for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. Microsoft’s worksheet header and footer instructions explain the available views and controls.
Check whether a header or footer is configured
In Page Layout view, select Insert > Header & Footer. Excel displays the header boxes at the top of the page and footer boxes at the bottom. Select a left, center, or right box to inspect or edit its content.

You can also open the worksheet’s Page Setup dialog and choose the Header/Footer tab to view custom header and footer controls. If you are editing several worksheets together, Microsoft documents selecting multiple sheet tabs and using Page Setup to apply settings across them.
If you’re using Excel for the web, switch to desktop Excel
Excel for the web has a specific limitation: it cannot insert a footer, and it does not display a footer inserted in desktop Excel. Microsoft also says page numbers cannot be inserted, viewed, or printed in Excel for the web. Open the workbook in desktop Excel to work with footer or page-number features.

First page is missing the header or footer
In the Header & Footer tools, check whether Different First Page is enabled. This setting removes headers and footers from the first printed page.

Odd and even pages look different
Check Different Odd & Even Pages. When enabled, odd and even pages can use different header and footer content.
Microsoft describes both options in its worksheet header and footer guidance.

If the text is too small or misplaced in print
Header and footer display can be affected by print layout settings. In Page Setup, check whether Scale with Document is enabled if the header or footer text appears too small or too large relative to the worksheet. Check the Header/Footer margin as well: it should be smaller than the page’s top or bottom margin and at least as large as the printer’s minimum margin.

For charts and chart sheets, use Page Setup
Header and footer controls for charts and chart sheets are handled through the Page Setup dialog rather than the ordinary worksheet editing route. If the missing header or footer belongs to a chart or chart sheet, open Page Setup and inspect its Header/Footer options.
Quick troubleshooting order
- Switch to View > Page Layout or inspect File > Print.
- In Page Layout view, select Insert > Header & Footer and inspect the left, center, and right boxes.
- If you are in Excel for the web, open the workbook in desktop Excel to work with footers or page numbers.
- If only the first page is affected, check Different First Page; if odd and even pages differ, check Different Odd & Even Pages.
- If print placement or size is wrong, review Scale with Document and the Header/Footer margins, then verify in Print Preview.
- If the content belongs to a chart or chart sheet, use Page Setup.
