An Ethereum decentralized-exchange (DEX) swap can deliver fewer tokens than its initial quote for three main reasons: your own trade moves the automated-market-maker (AMM) price, the market changes before the transaction is mined, or transaction ordering exposes the pending swap to adverse maximal extractable value (MEV), such as a sandwich trade. Slippage tolerance controls how much deterioration you will accept; it does not guarantee the quoted price.
This explanation applies to on-chain Ethereum DEX swaps, especially AMMs. It does not describe order matching on centralized exchanges.
Price impact and slippage are different problems
Wallets and DEX interfaces often show one expected output, but that figure is a calculation made before your transaction is executed. Two related terms explain why the final amount can differ.
Price impact: the trade moves the pool
Price impact is the part of the price change caused by the size of your own swap relative to the pool’s available liquidity. Uniswap’s glossary defines it as “the difference between the mid-price and the execution price caused by your trade size relative to the pool’s liquidity.” See the Uniswap Protocol Glossary.

A small swap against a deep pool may barely change the reserve ratio. The same dollar value against a shallow pool can move the ratio substantially, so later portions of your order execute at progressively less favorable rates. Price impact exists even if the blockchain includes your transaction immediately and no other trader acts first.
Slippage: the total difference by execution time
Uniswap uses slippage for “the total difference between the expected price at the time of submitting a transaction and the actual execution price.” That total can include your trade’s price impact, price movements caused by other swaps, and changes that occur while the transaction waits to be included in a block. The formal definition is in the same glossary.
In ordinary conversation, people often call any worse-than-expected fill “slippage.” For diagnosis, separate the causes: price impact is produced by your order; slippage is measured from submission to execution and can contain several causes.
| Concept | What changes the price | When it occurs | What you can control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price impact | Your swap’s size compared with pool liquidity | As the AMM executes the trade | Trade size, route, and pool selection |
| Market movement | Other trades or broader demand while your transaction is pending | Between quote and on-chain execution | Timing and transaction-submission conditions |
| MEV-related adverse execution | Transaction ordering around your pending swap | Before and after your transaction in a block | Routing choices and exposure reduction, not a guaranteed result |
| Slippage tolerance | Your selected limit on an acceptable output or price | At execution, when the contract checks the limit | The tolerance setting; a wider value accepts more downside |
How an AMM calculates a swap
Reserves and the pricing curve
An AMM does not need a traditional order book matching every buyer with a seller. A pool holds reserves of two tokens, and a pricing rule determines how much of one token must be deposited to withdraw the other. In the constant-product model documented for Uniswap v2, the reserve product must remain constant after fees, so removing more of one asset requires adding the other and changes the reserve ratio. Read Uniswap v2 Pricing for that model and How Uniswap Works for the broader AMM explanation.
Because the curve is nonlinear, the quoted average rate is not the same as the marginal rate at the end of the swap. A larger order consumes more of the available reserve and receives a worse average price. The exact mathematics and fee treatment differ among protocols and versions; the v2 documentation is not a complete description of every current Uniswap version, and it notes that v4 is current.
A quote is a snapshot, not a reservation
When a DEX displays an expected output, it has read pool state at a particular moment. Your transaction is then signed, propagated, and eventually included on-chain. During that interval, another swap can alter the reserves, or the external market can move the token price. The longer the transaction remains pending, the more opportunities there are for the state used by the quote to become stale.

Why headline volume is not enough
A token pair’s reported 24-hour volume describes activity over a period; it does not tell you how much liquidity is available at the exact price and block in which your order executes. Execution depth depends on the reserves in the selected pool, the pricing rule, fees, and any route that splits the trade across pools.
| Condition | Likely execution effect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Large order relative to reserves | Higher price impact and a lower average output | Displayed price-impact estimate and pool depth |
| Small order in a deep pool | Lower price impact, though the market can still move | Expected output and current volatility |
| Thin or fragmented liquidity | More reserve movement and potentially costly multi-hop routing | Route details, fees, and per-hop impact |
| Fast-moving market | Greater difference between submission quote and mined result | Pending duration and tolerance limit |
Compare the proposed route rather than relying on a token’s popularity or a site’s volume headline. A route through several pools may find more total liquidity, but it can also add fees, gas use, and additional points at which prices can change.
How transaction ordering creates MEV losses
The sandwich pattern
Ethereum defines maximal extractable value (MEV) as value associated with selecting and ordering transactions in a block. In a common sandwich pattern, a searcher notices a large pending swap, buys the asset before it, lets the user’s trade push the price upward, and sells after the user’s trade. The searcher’s two trades capture part of the price movement created by the victim’s order.
Ethereum.org states: “Users who are sandwiched face increased slippage and worse execution on their trades.” The complete explanation and transaction sequence are in Ethereum’s MEV documentation.

Why a public pending transaction is exposed
A transaction broadcast through a public mempool can be visible to searchers before a validator includes it. The transaction’s token pair, amount, minimum output, and gas parameters can reveal whether it is profitable to insert trades around it. This is separate from ordinary market movement: ordering changes who trades immediately before and after you.

MEV is not guaranteed to affect every swap. It is more plausible when an order is large, moves a liquid market noticeably, or remains visible and pending long enough for a searcher to react. A successful transaction can still be MEV-affected; confirmation only means the contract accepted the result within your limit.
What slippage tolerance actually does
Slippage tolerance is a maximum adverse difference you allow between the quoted result and the transaction’s accepted result. For a token purchase, the contract generally enforces a minimum amount received; for a sale, it enforces a maximum amount paid or an equivalent price bound. If the execution falls outside that bound, the swap reverts rather than completing at an even worse price.
A lower tolerance protects the output more tightly but raises the chance of failure when the market moves or the quote becomes stale. A higher tolerance makes inclusion more likely while permitting a larger adverse move. It cannot force the pool to deliver the original quote, and a fill exactly at the limit does not mean the quote was preserved.

- Review the quote: record the expected output, route, estimated price impact, network fee, and the interface’s minimum-received or maximum-paid value.
- Open the swap’s slippage setting: interfaces use labels such as “slippage tolerance,” “maximum slippage,” or an advanced settings control; the exact location varies by wallet and DEX.
- Choose a bound that matches the trade: use a tighter limit when protecting price matters more than avoiding a revert, and do not widen it merely to make a failing swap succeed.
- Recheck before signing: confirm that the minimum output and route still match your intention after any quote refresh.
- Monitor confirmation: if the transaction reverts, inspect whether the price moved beyond the limit; if it succeeds, compare the actual fill with the quoted and minimum values.
There is no universal setting established by the available documentation. The appropriate bound depends on pool depth, volatility, order size, and how much failure risk you can accept.

Reduce the order’s impact
If your swap is large relative to the pool, split it into smaller transactions or execute over time. Splitting can reduce the price impact of each individual trade, but it adds gas costs, takes longer, and exposes later portions to additional market movement. It is a trade-off, not a guaranteed improvement.
Use a route with usable depth
Inspect which pools and intermediate tokens the interface proposes. A route with deeper reserves can lower price impact. Conversely, a route that appears to offer a better headline rate may have thin liquidity, high fees, or several hops whose combined costs erase the advantage. Compare the final output after fees and gas rather than the first displayed exchange rate.

Choose timing and transaction conditions carefully
Refreshing the quote immediately before signing reduces the chance that you are acting on an obviously stale snapshot. During abrupt volatility, waiting for a calmer market may reduce quote-to-execution movement, although waiting also means the price may move against you. A faster inclusion path can shorten exposure to intervening trades, but network fees and validator behavior determine whether a transaction actually confirms sooner.
Consider private or intent-based routing, with realistic expectations
Uniswap Labs describes private routing in Uniswap Wallet and UniswapX, where fillers compete to execute user intents, as approaches intended to reduce harmful MEV exposure or improve execution. These descriptions come from Uniswap’s MEV article. They are not guarantees: availability depends on the wallet, network, route, and participating infrastructure, and private delivery does not remove ordinary price impact or market risk.
| Approach | Primary benefit | Main trade-off | Guarantee? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tighter tolerance | Limits the worst accepted output | More reverted transactions | No; it only sets a bound |
| Split the order | Can reduce each trade’s price impact | More gas, time, and exposure to later price changes | No |
| Deeper pool or improved route | More execution depth | Extra hops and fees can offset gains | No |
| Private routing | May reduce public-ordering exposure | Depends on wallet and infrastructure availability | No; described as risk reduction |
| Intent-based competition | Fillers may compete for execution | Route, filler, and network conditions vary | No; competition is not a promised price |
How to diagnose the result after execution
Before signing
- Confirm that the network is Ethereum and that the token pair is correct.
- Check the quoted output, minimum received or maximum paid, estimated price impact, route, fee, and slippage tolerance.
- Compare the order size with the liquidity available in the proposed pools.
- Ask whether the amount is large enough that splitting would materially change the risk-versus-cost trade-off.
After confirmation
- Use the transaction details to compare the actual token amounts with the quote and the enforced limit.
- If the difference is close to the limit, distinguish normal market movement and price impact from a possible ordering event; the transaction record alone may not prove a sandwich.
- If the transaction reverted, verify whether the failure was caused by the price crossing your tolerance, insufficient gas, a token-specific rule, or another contract error.
- Do not retry repeatedly with a much wider tolerance without checking the current quote and route; doing so can turn a temporary failure into an unnecessarily expensive fill.
A concrete hypothetical
Uniswap’s slippage article uses a hypothetical 10,000 USDC quote with a 6% tolerance to illustrate the setting. It is an example, not a measured market statistic. In that scenario, the transaction may be accepted anywhere within the permitted range; acceptance at the worst allowed result would still represent a substantially poorer fill than the original quote. The example demonstrates why tolerance is a failure boundary rather than a promise of execution quality. See What is Slippage?.
What this explanation does—and does not—cover
The mechanisms above describe Ethereum-based DEX swaps that use AMM-style pools and related routing. They should not be generalized to centralized exchanges, where an order book and the venue’s matching and custody rules determine execution. Even among DEXs, pool formulas, fees, routing systems, and transaction-delivery methods differ, so a setting or mitigation that helps one venue is not automatically optimal on another.
The practical test is to separate the causes: estimate how much your order will move the pool, account for the time between quote and mining, inspect the route and liquidity, choose a tolerance that reflects your acceptable downside, and treat MEV-protection features as possible risk reduction rather than a guarantee of the displayed price.
