A page with no visible end, a clip that starts before you choose it, and a feed that occasionally serves something especially compelling all share a design effect: they make continuation easier than stopping. That does not make ordinary browsing equivalent to gambling. It does mean interface tempo—the way an experience moves from one item to the next—can shape whether people get a clear chance to pause and decide.
How interface tempo changes the choice to continue
Many digital experiences have no fixed pace. A user can scroll, watch, or tap through items continuously, while the interface determines whether the next item arrives automatically or waits for a fresh choice. That transition can influence how easy it is to notice time passing and reconsider what to do next.
Infinite scroll removes the page-end cue
With a paginated list, reaching the bottom is a natural moment to stop, load another page, or leave. Infinite scroll removes that boundary: more content appears as the user approaches the end of what is visible. The result is not that everyone will continue, but that the interface supplies fewer built-in stopping opportunities.

Autoplay moves directly to the next item
Autoplay begins another video or track without requiring a new selection. That can be convenient, especially when someone wants uninterrupted playback. It can also let a session continue without the small interruption in which a person might otherwise decide whether to keep watching.

- Take Back Control of Your Screen Time: Brick is a physical device that temporarily removes distracting apps and their notifications from your phone by creating real world friction. When you're ready to reconnect, return to your brick and tap to unblock your apps. Includes 1 grey Brick.
- Effortless Control: Brick is subscription-free and includes lifetime access to the Brick app at no additional cost. No complex setups, just more time for what matters.
- How to Use: Open the Brick app and choose which apps or websites you want to block. Tap your phone to the Brick to activate it and turn your phone back into a tool that supports your goals. When you're ready to reconnect, simply tap again to regain access.
- Custom Modes: Create custom modes for different parts of your day — each with its own set of blocked apps. Boost productivity in Work mode, study without distractions in School mode, and be present at home in Family Time mode.
- Track Usage: Make digital health a daily habit. As soon as your phone is Bricked, a timer starts tracking how long you are staying focused for. You can monitor your Brick activity such as hours spent Bricked or daily average Bricked time in the app.
Uncertain rewards can make “one more” appealing
Feeds do not deliver equally satisfying material on a predictable schedule. The UK government’s Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) describes a variable-interval reward pattern in which especially enjoyable content may appear after an uncertain period of scrolling. This helps explain why a person might keep looking for a particularly interesting next item, but it does not establish that everyone responds the same way.
The “casino floor” comparison is useful as a metaphor for an environment that keeps presenting another stimulus. It should not be taken literally: browsing and gambling are different activities, with different stakes and regulatory contexts.
What the evidence says about autoplay
A 2024 preprint by Schaffner and colleagues reports an experiment involving 76 Netflix users in the United States. Disabling autoplay significantly reduced average daily watching and average session length in that study. The result suggests that autoplay can affect viewing behavior in that particular setting; it does not show that all autoplay is harmful or that the same effect occurs in every feed or for every user. Participants were split over whether autoplay’s effects outweighed its convenience. That tension matters for design: an automatic transition may suit someone who wants continuous playback, while another person may prefer a clear pause before the next item. A control that allows people to choose can preserve convenience without making continuation the default for everyone.
More broadly, the CDEI groups autoplay, infinite scroll, push notifications, dark patterns, and variable rewards among persuasive-design approaches that may contribute to addictive behavior, particularly in combination. The report also emphasizes that addictive design is difficult to define and identify, context matters, and the nature and scale of harms remain unclear or contested. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) likewise discusses ways interface design can capture attention and time, while distinguishing individual reactions from cumulative consumer harms. Neither source supports treating a single design feature as proof of harm to a particular person. CDEI AI Barometer · OECD report on dark commercial patterns.
What gambling rules show—and what they do not
Rules for gambling products offer examples of how regulators can address pace and deliberate action. They are not general legal requirements for streaming services or social media, and they should not be presented as evidence that ordinary browsing is gambling.

UK: autoplay prohibited for online gaming products
The UK Gambling Commission says it introduced a requirement prohibiting autoplay for online gaming products. Its guidance explains the concern that automatic play removes physical interaction and may reduce mental engagement. The Commission’s guidance also records accessibility concerns raised by respondents, a reminder that automation can help some users even as it reduces pauses for others. A narrow clarification applies to automatic posting of blinds in peer-to-peer poker; it does not turn the rule into a general restriction on autoplay across the internet. New Zealand: a required pause and separate action between rounds
New Zealand’s Online Casino Gambling Minimum Standards 2026 came into force on 8 July 2026 for operators covered by the relevant Act. For game tempo, the standards require at least 2.5 seconds between a round starting and the next round becoming available, as well as a separate deliberate customer action to start each new round. They also require a means for players to track time. These are requirements for covered online casino operators in New Zealand, not a universal digital-design standard. New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs standards.
The same standards require time, deposit, and spend limits to be easy to access, and a minimum 24-hour wait before a previously set limit can be increased or removed. Those measures belong to the same regulated gambling context; they are not general requirements for apps or websites.

How to assess whether an interface leaves room to stop
Designers evaluating a feed, player, or other continuous experience can use the following questions as practical prompts. They are not a validated scoring system or a guarantee of a particular outcome.
- Transition: Does the next item begin automatically, or does the user make a fresh, deliberate choice?
- Stopping cue: Is there a visible end, an “all caught up” state, or another natural pause?
- Time awareness: Can someone see elapsed or current time without leaving the experience?
- Control discoverability: Are autoplay, notification, and time-control settings easy to find and change?
- Choice and accessibility: Does the design preserve useful automation while making a clear alternative available to people who want more pauses?
- Evidence: Is a claimed effect supported by research in this service and context, or inferred from a different product or domain?
For readers, the same questions can help identify which feature is extending a session beyond what they intended. A visible stopping point or a user-controlled transition gives more opportunity to notice the choice; it cannot guarantee what someone will choose or how any individual will respond.
