Changing a property list (plist) file on disk does not necessarily change a job definition that launchd has already loaded. To apply a changed setting, inspect the live job and then reload it in the correct service domain—while accounting for whether stopping it is safe.
Why did editing the plist change nothing?
A plist is configuration input; it is not proof of a job’s current runtime state. Saving a new value changes the file, but a job that is already loaded may continue using the definition it read earlier. Apple’s plist manual explicitly notes that the Disabled key does not indicate whether a job is currently loaded. Apple recommends checking runtime state with launchctl list or ServiceManagement instead: Apple’s launchd.plist manual.
Apple describes launchd as macOS’s manager for daemons and agents, and says it can run shell scripts. Its Terminal guide points users to launchctl for loading and unloading jobs: Apple Support’s launchd guide.
What happened in the 30-to-45-second example?
In a first-person account published by Lily on DEV Community in 2026, the application’s configured environment value was changed from 30 seconds to 45 seconds, but the loaded job still reported 30. The author describes a 31-line Bash reconciliation script that compares the value in the plist with the loaded value and reloads the job when appropriate. The example concerns a per-user LaunchAgent in ~/Library/LaunchAgents. That means its commands must target the logged-in user’s GUI service domain; the procedure is not automatically interchangeable with reloading a system daemon. Common job locations also include /Library/LaunchAgents and /Library/LaunchDaemons, but the file’s location alone does not determine the right domain or prove that a job is loaded.
How can you check the file and the loaded job?
Compare the desired value in the plist with the value reported for the loaded service. The author’s example compares the plist’s environment value with what launchctl print shows. Confirm the service label and domain for your own job rather than copying a label or command from another setup.

Read the configured value from that file, then query the loaded job with
launchctl printin the appropriate domain. Apple’slaunchctlmanual documents job-management and inspection commands: Apple’s launchctl manual. -
Compare the values. If the file contains the new value but the live job shows the old one, the edit has not yet reached the loaded definition. If the live job already shows the new value, investigate the application’s own configuration handling instead of assuming a plist reload will fix it.
Parsing command output is sensitive to its format. The cited account does not establish a tested macOS version matrix, so verify any script that extracts values from launchctl output on the macOS releases and domains you actually support.

How do you make launchd read the changed plist?
For an occasional change, manually inspect the job and perform a controlled reload if interruption is acceptable. In the per-user example, the author’s script uses launchctl bootout followed by launchctl bootstrap to remove the loaded service and load it again from the plist. This is the author’s described implementation, not a universally safe, verified script; determine the correct domain, file, permissions, and service label before adapting it.

Apple warns that a stopped job may restart if its launch criteria remain satisfied. A KeepAlive setting or other trigger can therefore affect what happens after a stop or reload. Consult the job-management details in Apple’s launchctl manual and assess the job’s own configuration.

Choose based on how long the application can safely keep using the old value, whether a reload may interrupt work, and how you will detect a failed comparison or reload. Periodic reconciliation is useful only if its parser, active-work check, scheduling, and logs are dependable in your environment.

Is this the same as launchd’s TimeOut or ExitTimeOut?
No. The example’s AUTOLIKE_TIMEOUT_SEC is an application-level environment value. Apple’s plist manual describes TimeOut as an idle timeout passed to a job and ExitTimeOut as the wait before sending SIGKILL while stopping a job. Similar names do not make those keys interchangeable with an application’s environment variable: Apple’s launchd.plist manual.
What else should you check before adapting the approach?

Service domain: A per-user LaunchAgent and a system daemon require different domain handling. The 30-to-45-second account is about a user LaunchAgent.

Permissions and ownership: Ensure the plist can be read in the context used to bootstrap the job and that you are changing the intended file.

Triggers and restart behavior: Review
KeepAliveand other launch conditions because a stopped job can start again when its criteria remain true. -
Application behavior: Confirm that the application reads the environment value from the launchd-provided environment and whether it needs a restart to use a changed value.

Process model: Apple’s archived guidance says launchd-managed daemons should not daemonize themselves; doing so may make launchd treat the process as having died. This is background guidance, not the documented cause of the timeout incident: Apple’s archived launch-daemon guidance.
