No thermometer has measured the mantle at depth. Scientists estimate its temperature indirectly by combining mineral phase equilibria, melting experiments, petrological thermometers, seismic velocities, surface heat flow and numerical models of convection. Those methods do not respond to temperature alone: composition, pressure, water, phase changes, viscosity and unresolved structure also affect the signals. A model is therefore credible only when it explains several independent observations at once.

Different studies can produce different temperatures without one necessarily being “wrong.” They may use different reference geotherms, mineral compositions, heat-production inventories, seismic resolutions or boundary conditions. The important question is not which single number wins, but which model survives cross-checks against mineral physics, seismology, petrology and Earth’s heat budget.

What mantle temperature actually means

“Mantle temperature” can describe several different quantities. A study may report an absolute temperature at a specified pressure and depth, a temperature anomaly relative to a reference geotherm, or a potential temperature—the temperature a parcel would have after being moved adiabatically to a standard pressure. These are not interchangeable.

  • Absolute temperature: a thermodynamic value tied to pressure, depth and a mineralogical model.
  • Temperature anomaly: a difference from an assumed reference mantle geotherm, often written as ΔT. It indicates that one region is hotter or colder than the reference, not what its absolute temperature must be.
  • Potential temperature: a way to compare material that has moved to different depths by correcting for adiabatic compression.

Depth, pressure, geographic scale and time interval must accompany every number. A local plume estimate, a global average and a temperature assigned to the core–mantle boundary answer different questions. Even when two papers use the word “temperature,” they may be reporting different quantities.

Why no direct thermometer reaches the mantle

The deepest boreholes sample only the crust. Mantle rocks exposed at the surface have usually traveled through changing pressure, temperature and melting conditions, so their minerals preserve a history that must be reconstructed. Scientists instead use physical signals that travel through or emerge from the mantle.

Minerals respond to more than heat

Mineral density, elastic moduli and stability fields vary with pressure, temperature and chemical composition. Water and other impurities can shift melting points and phase boundaries. A seismic velocity change can therefore result from a thermal anomaly, a compositional change, a different mineral assemblage or a combination of all three.

Every inference contains a reference state

To turn an observation into temperature, investigators select a mineralogical composition, equations of state and a baseline geotherm. Changing that reference can change the inferred absolute temperature while leaving the observed signal unchanged. A 2025 Geophysical Journal International study states: “With the approximated mineralogies, absolute temperatures can only be inferred as deviations from an uncertain reference mantle geotherm.”

The main reasons models disagree

Seismic observations are non-unique

Seismic tomography maps variations in wave speed and sometimes attenuation. It does not measure temperature directly. Converting a velocity perturbation into ΔT requires a thermodynamic model for mantle minerals and an assumed composition. If the assumed composition is wrong, a thermal interpretation can be biased even when the seismic fit is excellent.

Tomography has finite resolution

Earthquake sources and seismic stations sample the planet unevenly. Inversions smooth or damp structures that are smaller than the data can resolve, and different frequency bands emphasize different scales. A 2025 European Geosciences Union meeting summary reported average temperature deviations of roughly 50–100 K in the upper mantle and up to about 200 K at depth, depending on tomographic resolution. Those figures describe uncertainty in one analysis, not a universal error bar for every seismic model.

Phase transitions alter the signal

Minerals transform into new crystal structures as pressure rises. The associated changes in density and elastic properties can produce sharp seismic boundaries. Temperature shifts the pressure at which a transition occurs, while latent heat affects the thermal structure itself. A model that omits or simplifies these transitions may assign a thermal anomaly to what is actually a phase or compositional effect.

Heat production and cooling are uncertain

A thermal history must account for radiogenic heat, primordial heat and secular cooling. The 2013 Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences review puts total present-day Earth heat loss at approximately 47 TW. Models differ in how much of that loss comes from radioactive elements, how much leaves through the lithosphere and how rapidly the mantle has cooled. Different allocations lead to different present-day geotherms even when they reproduce the same surface heat flow.

Viscosity changes the circulation

Convection models require a viscosity law. Mantle viscosity depends strongly on temperature, pressure, grain size, water content and deformation mechanism. A model with a steep temperature dependence can localize flow into narrow boundary layers; a weaker dependence can produce broader circulation. Because convection controls how heat is transported, the assumed viscosity feeds back into the predicted temperature field.

The mantle is thermochemical

Subducted slabs, depleted melting residues and chemically enriched reservoirs can persist for long periods. A cold, dense slab and a chemically distinct but warmer body may both create seismic anomalies. Treating the mantle as a purely thermal fluid can therefore fit one dataset while violating petrological or heat-budget constraints.

How each evidence stream constrains temperature

Mineral phase equilibria and melting experiments

Laboratories reproduce mantle pressures and temperatures in high-pressure apparatus. Researchers observe when minerals transform, melt or separate into new phases, then compare those conditions with mineral assemblages found in natural rocks. These experiments are particularly valuable near the mantle transition zone, in the lower mantle and at the core–mantle boundary, where direct samples are unavailable.

Seismic travel times and tomography

Earthquakes generate compressional and shear waves that travel along paths through the mantle. Arrival times, waveform shapes and attenuation reveal differences in elastic properties. Global and regional tomographic inversions then estimate where waves are faster or slower than in a reference Earth model.

Fast waves often occur in cold, dense slabs, while slow waves can indicate hot upwellings. Neither interpretation is unique: composition, melt, anisotropy, scattering and phase changes can produce similar effects. Deep-mantle images also constrain the geometry of upwellings and downwellings and provide information relevant to heat flow at the core–mantle boundary, but weak signals and limited resolution restrict the temperature that can be assigned.

Thermodynamic inversion

In a thermodynamic inversion, a seismic velocity perturbation is passed through mineral-physics equations to estimate a temperature perturbation. The workflow requires elastic properties for each mineral, their pressure and temperature derivatives, phase proportions and a reference geotherm. Because the mineralogy is approximated, the output is generally ΔT rather than a uniquely measured absolute temperature.

Petrological thermometry

Mantle-derived xenoliths, volcanic rocks and magmas contain mineral compositions that can act as pressure–temperature indicators. Their interpretation must account for source composition, the degree and style of melting, crystallization, assimilation of surrounding rock and later alteration. A thermometer calibrated for one assemblage or chemical system may not apply to another, so petrological estimates are strongest when their provenance and reaction history are constrained.

Surface heat flow and the energy balance

Heat-flow measurements at the surface provide an integrated test of thermal models. A viable history must reproduce observed heat loss while allocating energy among radiogenic heating, primordial heat and secular cooling. Surface heat flow alone cannot reveal the temperature at a particular depth, but it can reject models whose internal heating or cooling rates are inconsistent with the planet-wide budget.

Numerical mantle-convection and core-cooling models

Geodynamic simulations solve equations for buoyancy, heat transport and deformation under assumed material properties and boundary conditions. Researchers compare predicted plate motions, mantle structure, phase boundaries and surface heat flow with observations. Core-convection models add the energy needed to sustain the geodynamo and constrain heat transferred across the core–mantle boundary.

A 2022 U.S. Geological Survey multidisciplinary study summarizes indirect constraints on core–mantle-boundary heat flow from petrology, seismic travel times, mineral melting experiments, mantle-convection models and core-convection models. Those constraints center on approximately 15 TW, with most allowing up to about 20 TW; they are estimates bounded by several methods, not direct calorimetry at the boundary.

What “seismic temperature” does—and does not—tell you

Suppose tomography finds a region where shear waves travel more slowly than in the reference model. A first hypothesis is higher temperature, because thermal expansion and anharmonic effects generally reduce elastic wave speeds. The investigator must then test alternatives:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Could a different mineral composition produce the same velocity?
  • Could partial melt, water or another impurity be present?
  • Does a phase transition shift explain the boundary?
  • Is the anomaly broader or narrower than the seismic resolution?
  • Do attenuation and anisotropy support a thermal interpretation?

Only after these checks can the velocity difference be translated into a temperature anomaly. The conversion is model-dependent, and the uncertainty usually grows with depth and with the size of structures that tomography cannot resolve.

Comparing the major model families

Model or evidence family Primary data Resolution and output Key assumptions Main limitation
Mineral phase-equilibrium model High-pressure phase boundaries and melting experiments Local pressure–temperature constraints at tested compositions Mineralogy, chemistry, equations of state and latent heat Laboratory compositions and conditions may not represent the whole mantle
Seismic tomography with thermodynamic inversion Travel times, waveforms, attenuation and anisotropy Regional to global structure; usually ΔT relative to a reference geotherm Reference model, mineral elastic properties, composition and smoothing Finite resolution and non-unique thermal/compositional interpretations
Petrological thermometer Mineral compositions in xenoliths and mantle-derived magmas Point or sample-scale pressure–temperature estimates Source composition, melting, crystallization, assimilation and alteration history Samples may not represent unsampled regions or original mantle conditions
Heat-budget model Surface heat flow and estimates of radiogenic inventory Planet-wide energy balance over geological time Radiogenic, primordial and secular-cooling contributions Integrated constraints do not locate temperature anomalies
Convection and core-cooling simulation Plate motions, mantle structure, heat flow and geodynamo requirements Three-dimensional fields evolving through time Viscosity law, boundary conditions, internal heating and phase physics Many parameter combinations can reproduce selected observations

A fair comparison keeps the reference geotherm, pressure or depth, potential-temperature definition, spatial scale and time scale consistent. It also checks whether each model fits seismic and petrological observations separately, rather than treating a good fit to one as proof of a unique temperature.

How scientists test a mantle-temperature model

  1. Define the reported quantity. State whether the result is absolute temperature, ΔT or potential temperature, and specify pressure, depth, region and reference geotherm.
  2. Build the mineralogical forward model. Select compositions, phase relations and elastic or thermodynamic properties appropriate to the mantle domain being studied.
  3. Predict measurable signals. Calculate seismic velocities and travel times, phase-boundary locations, melt conditions, heat flow and—in coupled simulations—plate or core behavior.
  4. Compare with independent observations. Use seismic data, laboratory phase relations, petrological estimates and surface heat flow rather than relying on the dataset used to construct the model.
  5. Vary uncertain parameters. Explore alternative compositions, water contents, viscosity laws, radiogenic inventories, boundary conditions and tomographic smoothing.
  6. Check the global energy budget. The model should be compatible with approximately 47 TW of total Earth heat loss reported in the 2013 review and with plausible core–mantle-boundary heat flow near 15 TW, with most constraints permitting up to about 20 TW.
  7. Report resolution and uncertainty. Distinguish a resolved anomaly from a feature created by smoothing, and state how uncertainty changes with depth and spatial scale.

An example of cross-domain testing rejecting a convenient fit

A 2018 joint inversion of oceanic lithosphere used multiple observations to test thermal structure. A half-space-cooling model could fit part of the available data, but it predicted a mid-ocean-ridge temperature more than 100°C hotter than permitted by petrological constraints. The result illustrates why a model cannot be accepted because it matches one observation: petrology supplied an independent limit that exposed the thermal inconsistency.

This kind of test is more informative than selecting the model with the most visually convincing temperature map. A model that slightly misses one dataset but remains consistent across mineral physics, seismic structure, petrology and heat flow may be more plausible than one that exactly fits tomography while violating the energy balance.

How to read competing temperature claims

  • Check the reference geotherm. A positive anomaly is meaningful only relative to the baseline used.
  • Check depth and pressure. Temperature changes with depth, and pressure changes mineral behavior.
  • Check the spatial scale. “Global mantle temperature” can hide large regional variations; a plume, slab and background mantle are not equivalent samples.
  • Check the data type. Seismic, petrological and experimental estimates constrain different parts of the problem.
  • Check composition and water assumptions. A thermal interpretation that fixes chemistry may overstate certainty.
  • Check resolution. The 2025 uncertainty analysis found deviations of roughly 50–100 K in the upper mantle and up to about 200 K at depth, depending on tomographic resolution.
  • Check time dependence. A present-day snapshot and a billion-year thermal history are different model products.

Which mantle-temperature model is right?

No single model currently provides a direct, uniquely measured temperature field for the entire mantle. The better-supported model is the one that explains several independent constraints with the fewest special assumptions: mineral phase behavior, seismic travel times and wave speeds, petrological temperatures, surface heat flow, plate-scale convection and the energy required for core convection.

Disagreement is therefore useful. It identifies where mineral properties, composition, seismic resolution, heat production or viscosity remain uncertain. As experiments improve, tomographic methods resolve more scales and models are tested against additional datasets, the range of acceptable temperatures can narrow without ever becoming a single thermometer reading.
