Long-inactive Bitcoin balances matter because they remain part of the blockchain’s recorded supply but may not be available to trade. If old coins move, that can change expectations about accessible supply—but a transfer alone does not show that the owner sold, or even intends to sell.

What “inactive Bitcoin” means—and what it does not

Bitcoin’s ledger records unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), not a definitive list of people’s wallets or intentions. An output that has not moved for years is observable as inactive for that period. The blockchain generally cannot establish whether its owner is deliberately holding, has died, has lost the private key, or will move it later.

It helps to distinguish four ideas:

  • On-chain balance: Bitcoin recorded at outputs associated with an address or a group of addresses under a particular analysis. It remains part of Bitcoin’s outstanding ledger supply.
  • Output inactivity: elapsed time since an output was created or last moved. This describes transaction history, not control or intent.
  • Effective liquid supply: coins that holders may realistically offer for sale over a given time horizon. It is an economic estimate, not a protocol-defined supply figure.
  • Permanent loss: coins that cannot be spent, commonly because the private key is unavailable. Loss is difficult to verify from inactivity alone.

Bitcoin.org explains that lost coins remain recorded on the blockchain but cannot be spent without their private keys: Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ. Such coins are effectively removed from circulation, not erased from the ledger.

Why dormant balances matter to the market

Recorded supply is not the same as available supply

Bitcoin’s issuance schedule and supply cap describe how the protocol issues coins. They do not say how much existing supply is likely to be offered for sale today. A coin whose key is lost and a coin whose owner chooses not to sell can both appear dormant in age-based data, even though only one is inaccessible. Research on active supply and legacy balances likewise treats availability as an economic question distinct from protocol accounting: the 2024 active-supply analysis and Coinbase Institutional’s analysis of legacy balances.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Old coins moving can change expectations

When long-held outputs move, analysts may infer that an old holder is active again and adjust their view of potentially accessible supply. That can attract attention even before anyone knows what happens next. A transfer may reflect custody changes, consolidation, a change output, or movement to another address controlled by the same holder. It is evidence that a transaction occurred—not proof of an exchange deposit or a market sale. The price effect, if any, depends on subsequent activity and market liquidity.

Large balances can matter even when no sale is confirmed

A widely watched balance associated with an early holder can shape expectations because market participants may ask whether those coins could eventually be sold. That possibility is not the same as an actual order, and attribution of addresses to a particular person can itself be uncertain. In 2026, Karl T. Ulrich’s Ledger paper modeled hypothetical patient, multi-year sales of Satoshi-attributed Bitcoin. Its modeled cumulative price impact was centered around 10–13% relative to a no-sale case. This is a result under that paper’s scenario and assumptions—not a forecast, evidence that the coins will move, or a general rule for Bitcoin price changes. See the Ledger paper.

How analysts measure dormancy—and the limits of each measure

UTXO age and age cohorts

UTXO-age measures group unspent outputs by the time since their creation or last movement. They are useful for describing how long coins have remained unmoved, but they do not identify a lost key, a living owner, or an intention to sell. A 2022 cohort study reported approximately 2 million BTC in outputs 5–10 years old, 4.5 million BTC in 2–5-year-old outputs, and 3 million BTC in 1–2-year-old outputs; it estimated about 11.5 million BTC had been inactive for more than one year. Those figures use data through February 2021 and are historical measurements, not current dormant-supply totals. The study is “Deciphering Bitcoin Blockchain Data by Cohort Analysis”.

Bitcoin-days-destroyed and average dormancy

Bitcoin-days-destroyed weights moved coins by how long they had remained unmoved; average dormancy uses related age-weighted turnover concepts. These metrics describe the age of coins spent during a period. They do not reveal who spent them or why. The distinction is explored in Ledger’s 2018 paper on Bitcoin average dormancy.

Active-supply and lost-supply estimates

Some academic approaches estimate the probability that coins are lost based on inactivity duration and historical movement patterns. Because the method must infer loss rather than observe an inaccessible private key, its output depends on assumptions. Treat “lost supply” figures as model-based estimates, not a count of coins whose keys have been verified as lost. For an example of this type of analysis, see the 2024 empirical study of active Bitcoin supply.

Addresses are not people or wallets

An address is not necessarily one person’s wallet: an individual or institution may control many addresses, while a custodian may hold coins on behalf of many clients. Address-level counts therefore should not be read as counts of owners. Some user-level analysis relies on address clustering, which introduces its own inferences. This distinction is discussed in the 2024 study of Bitcoin transaction flows and holding-time scaling laws.

How to read a claim about dormant Bitcoin

Before treating a headline or chart as evidence of future selling, check what it actually measures:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Unit: Is the figure about UTXOs, addresses, or inferred wallets?
  • Definition: How long must coins remain unmoved to count as dormant?
  • Date: What period does the data cover? A historical cohort figure is not a current total.
  • Custody treatment: Does the analysis account for exchange or custodian addresses that may represent many clients?
  • Meaning of “lost”: Does the source observe inaccessible keys, or estimate loss from inactivity and other assumptions?
  • Meaning of “moved”: Does the evidence show only an on-chain transfer, or does it also establish a sale?

For example, a 2026 methodology page from Henley & Partners repeats estimates of 2.3–4 million permanently lost BTC and 39,069 long-dormant addresses holding 3.8 million BTC, attributing them to external sources and methods. These are estimates, not verified counts of coins with provably inaccessible keys; see its methodology page.
