Tech companies shifted away from user-removable phone batteries during the 2010s because integrated batteries gave manufacturers more freedom to design compact devices and sealed enclosures. Repair access became harder in the process. No single cause explains the change: design priorities, enclosure engineering, and safety-certification concerns all played a part, and none proves that every phone needed a sealed battery.

Why did phones stop having removable batteries?

The European Commission Joint Research Centre describes a broad shift: user-replaceable phone batteries were typical in the early 2000s, then non-replaceable designs spread rapidly during the following decade. The available official sources do not give a market-wide percentage or identify one year when the transition happened.

Integrated batteries let manufacturers design the phone around the cell and enclosure rather than around a removable back cover and user-accessible connectors. In technical material on battery-rule exemptions, the European Commission records manufacturers citing compact integrated designs, soft-pack lithium-ion cells, and safety-certification requirements. These are relevant design considerations, not proof that a soft-pack cell or compact phone must have a battery users cannot replace.

Enclosure protection and safety are also part of the discussion, but they should not be reduced to absolutes. Opening a device can create design and reassembly challenges; the evidence does not establish that removable batteries inherently prevent water resistance or that sealed phones are always safer. The Commission’s rules themselves allow professional-only replacement in specified cases, including certain appliances designed for wet environments and professional medical devices.

What changed for owners and repairers?

A removable back made it straightforward to access and swap a battery. With an integrated battery, replacement may require opening the enclosure and working around adhesive, fasteners, connectors, or other components. That can add time, effort, or cost, although the actual repair varies by device and repair provider.

Battery access is only one part of repairability. The Joint Research Centre also points to removable fasteners and connectors, access to spare parts, and clear repair information. A device with a removable battery is not automatically easy to keep running if parts or instructions are unavailable; a sealed-battery device is not automatically unrepairable.

How do the older and integrated designs compare?

Consideration User-removable battery Integrated battery
Enclosure and form factor Design must accommodate a user-accessible battery and back cover. Allows the enclosure to be designed around an integrated cell; this is a design option, not a universal requirement for compactness or protection.
Battery access Users can access and replace the battery without opening the phone for a repair. Replacement generally involves opening the device; the steps depend on the model.
Repair effort and cost Battery swaps can be simpler, but overall repairability still depends on parts and information. Opening and reassembling the phone can add effort or cost; exact impact varies by model and repair provider.
Durability and safety claims Removability alone does not establish water resistance or safety. Sealing may support enclosure design goals, but it does not prove a device is inherently safer or that removable designs cannot resist water.

What do current EU battery rules require?

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 sets a general requirement for portable batteries in products placed on the EU market to be removable and replaceable by end users, subject to specified exceptions. The European Commission explains that the rule “helps extend products’ lifetime by allowing battery replacements and supports recycling by making it easier to collect used batteries.” This is not a blanket promise that every device sold in Europe has a snap-off back or a battery users can replace without tools.

On 14 July 2026, the Commission announced that it had adopted a delegated act adding six product categories to the exemption list, including smartwatches and fitness trackers, electric toys, and equipment within the ATEX scope. The Commission said the act would enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal if the European Parliament or Council did not object. The announcement alone does not establish that those additions are now in force; check the Official Journal and objection status before relying on them.

Smartphone ecodesign rules are separate

The EU also has smartphone- and tablet-specific ecodesign requirements. The Commission’s product-policy summary specifies battery durability of at least 800 charge-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity. It also covers disassembly, repair, and spare-parts access: critical spare parts must be available to repairers within 5–10 working days and until seven years after the end of sales of the model in the EU market. These requirements address durability and repair; they should not be mistaken for a simple mandate to restore the old removable plastic back.

What to check before replacing a phone battery

If battery wear is shortening a phone’s useful life, check the exact model’s repair options before buying parts or attempting a repair. A replacement kit can be useful only if it matches the device and you have the right tools and instructions.

  • Confirm the full phone model and that the battery is explicitly compatible with it.
  • Check what tools and opening steps the repair requires, and whether the instructions are clear for your experience level.
  • Compare a self-repair with a professional service, including parts availability and the repair provider’s terms.
  • Consider the risks of opening and reassembling the enclosure, especially if maintaining its original protection matters to you.

A power bank can help when you need extra charge away from an outlet, but it does not fix internal battery wear or make an integrated battery easier to replace.

Does a removable battery automatically make a phone last longer?

No. Easy battery access can make one common repair more convenient, but longer device life also depends on battery durability, parts and repair information, software support, and the condition of the rest of the phone. The design change reflects trade-offs, not evidence of a single universal corporate motive; claims that companies adopted integrated batteries solely to force upgrades are not established by the sources cited here.
