YouTube Music can show different artwork for what appears to be the same song because it may be displaying different catalog items or different video sources. One appearance can be an automatically generated Art Track using release artwork; another can be a matched music, lyric, or live video that uses the same audio but its own thumbnail. Separate releases, country or device context, and personal uploads can also change the image. YouTube has not published a complete rule that predicts which image will appear for every recording, so different art is not, by itself, proof that the audio is different or that the app is malfunctioning.
The key distinction: an Art Track is a catalog item
YouTube defines an Art Track as “an automatically generated YouTube version of a track on a music album.” It consists of the sound recording paired with album art. In other words, the cover image is part of the delivered release data, not a universal picture permanently attached to every copy of a song title.
YouTube’s DDEX documentation describes releases as structured metadata containing sound recordings and associated artwork resources. A recording can therefore be delivered in more than one release context, with each release carrying its own title, track listing, credits and art. A single may use one cover, a later album may use another, and a compilation or reissue may use a third.
That catalog structure explains why two entries with nearly identical titles can look different without either one being fake. Compare the release name, edition, track list and credits before assuming the images represent different recordings.

Five reasons the artwork can differ
1. The song belongs to different releases or editions
The same master recording may be delivered as a standalone single, an album track, a deluxe edition, a compilation entry or a reissue. Those are separate release records. Each record can include its own associated artwork, even when the audio and song title are unchanged.
Look at the album or release name shown beneath the track. If one version is under a single and another is under an album, you are comparing two catalog presentations. Track duration, explicit-content labeling, copyright line and artist credits can provide additional clues. YouTube’s public DDEX explanation describes how release metadata links recordings and artwork, but it does not list every reason a distributor might create apparently duplicate editions.
2. YouTube Music may be showing a matched video instead of the Art Track
An Art Track uses the release’s album art. Distributor guidance from DistroKid and CD Baby says YouTube Music can instead surface a same-audio video, such as an official music video, lyric video or live performance. The video has its own thumbnail or visual frame, so the displayed image can be completely different from the album cover.

Check the item type while it plays. An album-track presentation points to the release and its track list; a music, lyric or live video identifies a video source and may show a channel name or video-specific title. The audio can be identical even though the visual asset is not.
There is no documented listener control that reliably forces YouTube Music to replace a matched video with the Art Track. If the service has selected a video for that context, changing playlists or repeatedly reopening the track is not a guaranteed way to change the image.
3. The presentation can vary by country, app or device
CD Baby’s help guidance, updated December 1, 2025, says the replacement video shown for an Art Track can vary by listener country and by the app or device in use. That means two people can receive different thumbnails, or the same person can see different imagery in the YouTube Music app, the main YouTube app and a desktop browser.

This is a reported distribution behavior, not a published specification of YouTube’s internal selection algorithm. Treat a cross-device difference as a diagnostic clue rather than a promise that switching apps will fix the discrepancy. Regional rights, available video matches and catalog delivery can all affect which item is eligible to appear.

4. You are viewing a personal upload, not YouTube’s streamed catalog
YouTube Music also supports music files that a listener uploads to their own library. In that case, artwork comes from the file’s embedded metadata. A file can have no embedded image, an unexpected image, or multiple embedded images that different players interpret differently.
A 2022 YouTube Music Community answer from a Product Expert suggested checking the local file’s embedded artwork and removing unintended duplicate images. That is community guidance, not an official guarantee, and it applies only to a personal upload. Editing an MP3’s tags will not change the artwork attached to a streamed YouTube Music release.

5. The delivered catalog metadata is wrong
Sometimes the release itself has an incorrect or mismatched cover. Artwork is one field in the metadata supplied by the artist’s label or distributor, so a delivery mistake can attach the wrong image to an otherwise legitimate Art Track. A listener generally cannot repair that catalog record from playback settings.
For a streamed release, report the problem through YouTube’s feedback or reporting route and contact the artist, label or distributor if you can identify them. The correction has to happen in the rights-holder’s delivered metadata or through an Art Track takedown and redelivery.
How to tell which explanation fits your case
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Different covers appear under different album or single names | Separate release or edition records | Compare release title, edition, track list, credits and duration |
| The image changes when the item is identified as a music, lyric or live video | A matched video has replaced the Art Track | Check the playback item’s video title, channel and source |
| Two people or two devices see different images | Context-dependent video or catalog presentation | Compare country, app and device; treat the result as a clue, not a documented rule |
| Only your uploaded file has the unexpected image | Embedded local-file artwork | Inspect the file’s metadata and any embedded image list |
| The wrong cover appears consistently on an official release | Catalog metadata error | Record the release details and report it to YouTube or the rights holder |
A practical troubleshooting sequence for listeners
- Open the release page. Navigate from the track to its album, single or other release page. Confirm the release name, edition and track listing. Do not compare two song titles in isolation.
- Identify what is playing. Determine whether the item is an album Art Track or a music, lyric or live video. If it is a video, its thumbnail is expected to come from that video rather than from the album’s cover.
- Compare the metadata. Check artist credits, track duration, explicit label and copyright information. Matching audio does not guarantee matching release metadata, and different artwork alone does not establish a different recording.
- Use another surface only as a diagnostic test. Compare the YouTube Music app, the main YouTube app and a desktop browser if available. Note the country, device and app. A change can support the context explanation, but switching surfaces is not a guaranteed repair.
- Separate catalog playback from a personal upload. If the item is in your uploaded library, inspect the source file’s embedded artwork. Remove unintended duplicate images only if you understand that you are modifying the local source file, not YouTube’s catalog.
- Escalate a genuine catalog mismatch. Save the release name, track title, artist, displayed image and the playback item’s URL or identifier. Send those details through YouTube’s feedback tools and to the artist, label or distributor. Rights holders are the parties able to correct delivered release data.
What artists, labels and distributors can do
Inspect the release in YouTube Studio
YouTube’s “Manage releases and update your discography” help page says Official Artist Channel owners can review public releases in YouTube Studio’s desktop Releases tab. The tab exposes release titles, track count, artist credits, album art and track metadata. Eligible channel owners can request removal of an incorrect release or ask to add a missing release to the channel discography.

Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
This workflow controls how releases are represented in an artist’s discography. It is not a listener-side artwork picker and does not let an individual subscriber choose which image appears during playback.
Correct delivered metadata or redeliver the Art Track
YouTube’s partner guidance for incorrect track, album or artist information describes two correction paths: deliver a corrected version of the metadata, or request an Art Track takedown and then redeliver it with the right information. The distributor or label should follow its normal delivery process and preserve the release’s identifiers where applicable.
An important operational detail is that updating one track in an album requires metadata for every track in that album, including tracks that did not change. Sending only the corrected song can leave the album record incomplete or create additional inconsistencies.
Verify the source artwork before delivery
Before redelivery, confirm that the intended cover is attached to the correct release, that the release and track titles match the audio, and that the artist and featured-artist credits are consistent. Also check whether a separate single, compilation or reissue legitimately uses different art; not every difference is an error requiring takedown.
What different artwork does not prove
- It does not prove that the recording is different. Verify the release and playback item first.
- It does not establish that a cache problem, subscription tier or user preference caused the image. Those explanations are not documented by the cited guidance.
- It does not mean YouTube always chooses one definitive cover for a recording. The complete selection logic is not public.
- It does not mean editing a local MP3 will repair a streamed catalog release. Embedded-art changes affect only your own uploaded file.
- It does not guarantee that changing apps or devices will restore the Art Track. Context changes can alter what is shown, but no listener switch is documented as a fix.
Bottom line
Different album art for the same song is usually a sign that YouTube Music is presenting different release metadata or a different visual source, not that the audio has changed. First identify the release and whether playback is an Art Track, a matched video or a personal upload. If the official catalog item still carries the wrong cover, the artist, label or distributor must correct and redeliver the metadata.
