Yes, you can change it. On Galaxy phones with a multifunction Side button, holding the button performs whichever action is assigned to Long press. If that assignment is Bixby, Bixby opens; on phones updated to One UI 7, the default is generally Gemini, or Google Assistant where Gemini is unavailable. You can switch the gesture to Bixby, another digital assistant, or the power-off menu in Settings, although the exact choices depend on your model, software version, carrier and region.
Why the Side button opens Bixby
Samsung combined the former power and Bixby controls into a single multifunction Side button on many newer Galaxy phones. The button recognizes separate gestures: a short press, a long press and a double press. Each gesture has its own assignment, so a long press can launch an assistant even though a short press does something completely different.
Bixby appears when Long press is set to Bixby. That setting may have been selected during phone setup, restored from a backup, changed by a software update, or configured by someone who used the phone previously. It is normally a settings choice rather than a stuck or defective button.
Samsung’s current US support guidance lists three broad long-press destinations: Bixby, a digital assistant and the power-off menu. The wording and number of choices can differ by Galaxy model and One UI release. Samsung also warns that availability varies by device, carrier and region, so two Galaxy phones can show different menus even when their buttons look identical.

What changed with One UI 7
One UI 7 changed Samsung’s default behavior for the long press. Samsung Gulf support, updated May 19, 2025, says the default from One UI 7 onward is Gemini as the primary action when you press and hold the Side button. In regions where Gemini is unavailable, Google Assistant may be used instead.
This means a phone running One UI 7 may open Gemini rather than Bixby immediately after an update or reset. It does not mean Bixby has been removed. Bixby remains an available choice on devices and regions that expose it in the Side-button settings. If your phone still opens Bixby, its long-press assignment is Bixby, or the phone is using an older One UI configuration.
Do not apply one universal “default” to every Galaxy generation. Samsung’s support pages describe different menus for different software versions and regional variants, including a guide specifically scoped to Australian models and another for newer Galaxy phones and tablets in Ireland.

The quickest way to confirm the cause is to inspect the Side-button setting rather than repeatedly testing the hardware.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Side button. On some devices or software versions this is labeled Side key.
- Read the current value under Long press.
If it says Bixby, a sustained press is expected to open Bixby. If it says Digital assistant, the phone will open the assistant selected by the device; on One UI 7 that is commonly Gemini, with Google Assistant used where Gemini is unavailable. If it says Power off menu, holding the button should show power controls instead.
Change the long-press action to Bixby, an assistant or the power menu
On a current Galaxy phone, Samsung’s primary route is:
- Open Settings.
- Select Advanced features.
- Open Side button (or Side key).
- Tap Long press.
- Choose Bixby, Power off menu or one of the assistant options shown on your phone.
The change takes effect immediately; there is no separate Save button in Samsung’s documented flow. Lock the screen and hold the Side button once to verify the new behavior. Use a deliberate, continuous press rather than a quick tap, because a short press is a separate gesture.

- Open the Bixby app.
- Tap Settings in the upper-right corner.
- Open Side button settings.
- Tap Long press, then choose Bixby.
If the Bixby route does not show Side-button settings, use the Settings app route. Menu availability is tied to the phone’s software and regional configuration.
Long press choices and their trade-offs

Samsung Ireland’s support guidance, updated August 19, 2025, explicitly warns that assigning Bixby or a digital assistant to Long press removes access to the power-off menu from the Side button. This is a deliberate trade-off, not a malfunction.
Configure the double press separately
Double press is independent of Long press. Changing the long-press destination does not change what a quick double press does.

- Return to Settings > Advanced features > Side button.
- Tap Double press.
- Choose an available app or feature.
Samsung’s examples include Camera, Flashlight, Magnifier, Voice Recorder, Samsung Notes, Samsung Capture, and Modes and Routines, along with other installed apps on some models. The list is not identical across phones, so select only from the options your device displays. Double press can therefore remain a camera shortcut even when Long press is assigned to Bixby or the power menu.

How to reach power controls after assigning Bixby
When Long press is Bixby or another assistant, use one of Samsung’s alternate power-control methods:
- Open the Quick panel by swiping down from the top of the screen, then use the power icon if it is present in your panel layout.
- Press and hold Side button + Volume Down together. Samsung documents this combination for reaching power controls, although the exact response can vary by device and software.
If access to the power menu is more important than a hardware shortcut to Bixby, set Long press to Power off menu and use Bixby from its app or another available shortcut instead.

Samsung’s instructions are not a single model-wide specification. Check these variables before assuming an option is missing:

- One UI version: One UI 7 changes the documented default to Gemini (or Google Assistant where Gemini is unavailable), while older releases may show Bixby or a different assistant arrangement.
- Phone or tablet model: Samsung exposes different Side-button and Side-key capabilities across Galaxy generations.
- Region and carrier: Assistant services and shortcut choices can be restricted or renamed by regional availability and carrier software.
- Device language and updates: Labels can vary slightly, and an update can add, remove or reorder choices.
Samsung Australia’s guide is expressly for Australian variants, while Samsung’s US and Ireland pages describe their own supported configurations. Use the instructions that match your phone’s market when a menu label differs.

Older Galaxy phones with a dedicated Bixby key
Some earlier Galaxy models have a separate physical Bixby key instead of the newer combined Side button. Samsung lists the Galaxy Note9, the Galaxy S8 series and the Galaxy S10 and earlier among examples. On those legacy devices, Samsung says holding the dedicated key always activates Bixby Voice.
Do not follow a modern Side-button tutorial for a phone with that separate key. The newer Settings > Advanced features > Side button controls may not exist, and the key’s behavior is governed by the older Bixby-key design.
Troubleshoot an unexpected Bixby launch
The setting says Power off menu, but Bixby still appears
- Reopen Settings > Advanced features > Side button and confirm you changed Long press, not Double press.
- Check whether your phone calls the control Side key and whether you changed the setting on the correct user profile.
- Install any pending system update, restart the phone, and test a continuous press again. Samsung’s menu can change after a One UI update.
The Side-button option is missing
- Search Settings for Side button or Side key; the location can differ by One UI version.
- Confirm that the phone is not an older model with a dedicated Bixby key.
- Account for regional or carrier differences. Samsung states that available actions vary by model, software and region.
Gemini appears after an update and you want Bixby
That is consistent with One UI 7’s documented default. Open Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long press and select Bixby if it is listed. The Bixby app’s Settings > Side button settings > Long press route is an alternative.
You need the power menu but do not want to change the assignment
Keep Bixby or the assistant on Long press and use the Quick panel or Side + Volume Down instead. This preserves your chosen assistant shortcut while retaining a way to reach power controls.
Can you disable Bixby completely?
Remapping the Side button can stop accidental Bixby launches from a long press, but Samsung’s older UK guidance, updated April 28, 2022, describes remapping as a way to reduce accidental launches rather than removing Bixby entirely. The presence of Bixby in the app list or system software can therefore remain even after you assign another Long-press action.
For the specific problem in this article—Bixby opening when you hold the button—you do not need to remove the app, buy an accessory or replace the button. Change the Long press assignment and test the gesture.
Which setting should you choose?
- Choose Bixby if you regularly use Samsung’s assistant and want the fastest hardware shortcut.
- Choose Digital assistant if you prefer the assistant supplied by your current One UI configuration, such as Gemini on One UI 7.
- Choose Power off menu if predictable access to restart and shut down controls matters more than holding the button for an assistant.
Whichever option you select, remember that Long press and Double press are separate controls. Set each deliberately, then verify both gestures from the Side-button settings page.
