Deep pagination can make later pages slower because the database may need to process rows it will ultimately skip. But that mechanism alone does not prove pagination caused a week-by-week regression: the database, query plan, indexes, data, cache, and surrounding application work all matter. The way to find out is to compare the exact request and execution metrics at shallow and deep positions.

Why can later pages cost more?

With LIMIT/OFFSET, a request asks the server to skip earlier rows and return a later window. PostgreSQL cautions that skipped rows still have to be computed inside the server, so a large offset might be inefficient. MongoDB likewise documents that skip() becomes slower as the offset grows and that indexed range queries can typically outperform skip as offsets increase.

This is a possible cost pattern, not a universal performance law. The size of the effect depends on the execution plan, filters, sort, row width, indexes, data distribution, cache, and database implementation. A query that slowed over several weeks might also be affected by changes in any of those factors, or by work outside the database.

Search engines have different mechanics. Elastic explains that deep from/size pagination makes shards load hits from earlier pages as well as the requested page, increasing memory and CPU use. Its documentation advises against paging too deeply this way and recommends search_after with a point in time for deep traversal when a consistent index state is needed.

First make the result order predictable

Pagination needs a deterministic order. PostgreSQL warns that a LIMIT query without an ORDER BY that constrains rows into a unique order can return unpredictable subsets; changes in plans can also change which rows appear. Add a unique tie-breaker to the requested sort so records with equal primary sort values still have a defined order.

The same principle matters for seek-based pagination: the continuation condition must represent the complete sort tuple, including its tie-breaker. Otherwise, tied values can be skipped or repeated as the client moves between pages.

How to investigate the regression

  1. Capture the real request. Record the exact SQL or search request, parameter values, sort order, page size, and representative shallow and deep positions. Use the same filters and realistic values for comparison.
  2. Verify ordering. Confirm that the order is deterministic and ends in a unique key. For a multi-column sort, record every sort value that determines the continuation point.
  3. Compare plans and database metrics. Inspect the database-native execution plan and timing or buffer metrics for shallow and deep requests. Separate database execution from application serialization, network transfer, and any count query; otherwise, the measured endpoint time may obscure where the cost occurs.
  4. Inspect indexes against filters and sorting. Check whether the query’s filter and sort fields have useful index support and whether the chosen plan uses it. MongoDB’s query-optimization guidance recommends indexes for commonly issued queries and notes that indexes improve queries on indexed fields; the right index still depends on the actual query.
  5. Prototype the navigation that matches the product. If users mainly move forward or backward, test keyset or range pagination from the last seen sort tuple. Check what happens when rows are inserted or deleted between requests, and decide whether each page should reflect fresh data or a consistent snapshot.
  6. Use the search engine’s own continuation mechanism where applicable. For Elasticsearch deep traversal, evaluate search_after with a point in time when a stable index view is required. Do not assume SQL pagination behavior or consistency semantics transfer to a search system.
  7. Measure again under representative conditions. Repeat comparisons with realistic data and workload before concluding a change fixed the regression. A rewrite is a hypothesis until measured.

Which pagination approach fits?

Approach Best fit Deep-page cost and constraints Navigation and consistency
LIMIT/OFFSET or skip Shallow pages, numbered pages, and direct jumps Large offsets may require processing skipped rows or hits; impact depends on the engine and plan. Needs deterministic ordering. Separate requests can be affected by changes in the data.
Keyset or range pagination Sequential feeds and APIs with a stable ordered key Continues from the last seen key and needs a suitable index and a correct predicate for the full sort tuple. MongoDB documents indexed range queries as typically more efficient than skip at growing offsets. Fits next/previous traversal; arbitrary page jumps and exact page counts are less natural.
Search-after or cursor token Search engines and APIs designed for continuation Sort and token requirements are engine-specific. Elasticsearch recommends search_after with point in time for deep paging when consistent index state is needed. Cursor semantics and snapshot guarantees vary by product; check the deployed version.
Server-side cursor or bulk traversal Batch processing and exports May hold server-side state or require initial result work, so it is not automatically suitable for interactive requests. Elastic says scroll is intended for large-volume processing, not real-time user requests. Useful for traversing a stable result context, subject to resource and lifetime considerations.

Choose pagination around the user’s task

Keyset pagination starts from a known last result rather than counting past all earlier results. That makes it a natural fit for feeds, APIs, and exports that proceed sequentially, provided the sort keys and index support the query. It is less natural when users must jump directly to a numbered page such as page 237 or need a conventional page count.

For search results, use the search product’s documented cursor or search-after behavior and check what consistency guarantees it provides. MongoDB Search supports searchAfter and searchBefore tokens for moving from a reference point. Its documentation also warns that counting results can affect performance and recommends using the count option only when needed.

For Elasticsearch specifically, the current pagination guide documents a default from/size result window of 10,000 hits. Verify that limit against the deployed version and index setting before relying on it; for deep, consistent traversal, Elastic recommends search_after with a point in time.

What the post-mortem can—and cannot—conclude

The symptom “slower every week” does not identify a database, query, schema, index, or cause. Deep offsets are a credible suspect when later positions are slower, but the evidence needed to attribute this endpoint’s regression is its actual request, deterministic sort, plans, and measured timings. Without those, neither an offset rewrite nor a particular index can be called the fix.
