The Magic Mouse charges through a port on its underside. Apple’s current model uses USB-C, while older Magic Mouse 2 units use Lightning. Because the connector is on the surface that normally rests on your desk, Apple says the mouse is unavailable while it is plugged in. Apple documents those facts, but its support and product materials do not give a confirmed reason for putting the port there.

This guide separates what Apple has established from speculation, shows how to charge each model safely, and explains how to plan around the mouse’s charging limitation.

Where the Magic Mouse charging port is located

Turn the mouse over and look beneath the printed text and regulatory markings. The charging connector is set into the lower shell, not at the front or side. On the current Magic Mouse sold with USB-C, Apple’s product images show the same underside placement used by earlier versions.

The location has one immediate mechanical consequence: a cable connected underneath would press against the desk and interfere with the mouse’s ability to glide. Apple’s support documentation therefore states that “Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging.” This is an operational limitation documented by Apple, not an inference from photographs.

What Apple does—and does not—say about the design decision

Verified explanation

The connector is physically on the bottom, and the mouse cannot be used while a cable is attached. Those are the complete design facts Apple’s current support and product documents establish. The current USB-C model retains the underside port, so changing the connector standard did not move it to a usable edge.

Unverified explanations

Apple’s reviewed materials do not attribute the placement to a cleaner silhouette, internal component arrangement, manufacturing constraints, water resistance, desk clearance, or an intention to make owners keep a second mouse. Those ideas may appear in online commentary, but they should not be presented as Apple’s rationale without a named, reliable source. No statement from an Apple designer or spokesperson explaining the choice is identified in the cited documentation.

The most accurate answer to “why” is therefore two-part: Apple put the port on the underside, and that position makes the mouse unusable during charging; Apple has not publicly explained the underlying industrial-design motive in the materials cited here.

USB-C and Lightning: identify your Magic Mouse before charging

Cable compatibility depends on the generation. Apple’s current product page describes a rechargeable USB-C Magic Mouse and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable. The Magic Mouse 2 user guide documents a Lightning port on the underside. Apple Support likewise notes that the appropriate connector may be USB-C or Lightning depending on the device.

Quick visual check

  • A USB-C connector is small, rounded on both ends, and reversible.
  • A Lightning connector has a narrow, flat Apple-style plug with exposed contacts on the tip.
  • Do not force a plug. If it does not seat easily, inspect the port and confirm the mouse generation instead of assuming the cable is defective.

How to charge a Magic Mouse

Apple’s current support instructions cover both connector types. The cable’s other end can go to a Mac or to a compatible power adapter. Apple says the device should be switched on for the fastest battery-charging performance; this is a general charging instruction, not a promise of a particular number of minutes.

  1. Save any work that depends on mouse input, because the pointer will not be available while the cable is connected.
  2. Turn the Magic Mouse over on a stable, clean surface.
  3. Insert the correct USB-C or Lightning connector into the underside port. Align it gently and stop if you meet unusual resistance.
  4. Connect the cable’s other end to your Mac or a power adapter.
  5. Make sure the mouse is switched on if you want Apple’s stated fastest charging performance.
  6. Leave the cable connected until you have enough battery for the next work period, then disconnect it and return the mouse to its normal orientation.

Apple’s documents do not specify a universal full-charge time in the material cited here. Charging speed can vary with the power source, cable, battery condition and operating state, so an exact time should not be inferred from the port type.

What happens while the mouse is plugged in

The limitation is different from Apple’s other rechargeable desktop input devices. Apple says Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging, while Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad can be used during charging. A cable therefore cannot turn the mouse into a temporary wired pointing device.

Apple input device Can it be used while charging? Documented implication
Magic Mouse No Plan charging between tasks or keep another pointing method available.
Magic Keyboard Yes Typing can continue with the charging cable connected.
Magic Trackpad Yes Pointing and gestures can continue while charging.

Because the mouse cannot be operated during charging, a low-battery warning is more useful when it appears before an urgent task. If the battery is already empty, use a trackpad, keyboard navigation, a built-in laptop trackpad, or another compatible pointing device until charging is complete.

How long the battery lasts

Apple describes the current Magic Mouse battery as lasting “about a month or more” between charges. That phrase is Apple’s product estimate, not an independently controlled test. Actual runtime depends on use, wireless conditions, system behavior and battery age, so treat it as a planning guideline rather than a guaranteed interval.

  • USB A and USB C Connection: The wireless mouse comes with USB receiver and USB C adapter (packed with the charging cable), works for computer with USB A or USB C port. For USB C connection, please plug the USB receiver into the adapter first, then plug the adapter into your device.

A practical charging routine

  • Charge before a travel day, presentation or long editing session rather than waiting for complete depletion.
  • Use a regular calendar reminder if you rarely check the battery indicator.
  • Keep the correct cable with the computer or dock where you normally work.
  • If the mouse is shared, agree on a charging location so it is not left unavailable when another person needs it.

There is no Apple-documented requirement in the cited material to drain the battery fully before recharging. Charging when convenient avoids the specific problem created by the underside port: an empty mouse cannot be used as a wired backup.

Why the underside port is inconvenient in daily use

Desk use

To connect the cable, you must lift or flip the mouse. Once connected, the cable exits into the desk surface, so ordinary cursor movement is not practical. The inconvenience is therefore not merely that the port is harder to see; the physical orientation prevents normal operation.

Travel and shared workspaces

A USB-C model and a Lightning model need different spare cables. If several people use Apple peripherals, label cables or keep each one with its device. In a meeting room, carry a second pointing option if the mouse’s battery status is uncertain, because plugging in will not preserve mouse control.

Troubleshooting a Magic Mouse that will not charge

The plug does not fit

  • Check whether the mouse is the USB-C generation or an older Lightning Magic Mouse 2.
  • Try the cable supplied for that model or another known-good cable of the same connector type.
  • Inspect the port for obstruction and verify that the plug is fully seated without force.

The mouse remains unavailable

That behavior is expected while the cable is connected. Disconnect it, turn the mouse over, and allow the wireless connection to resume. If it remains unresponsive after disconnecting, check that the mouse is switched on and paired with the Mac.

Charging appears intermittent

  • Reconnect both ends of the cable.
  • Try a different USB port or compatible power adapter.
  • Check the cable for fraying or a loose connector.
  • Test with the Mac powered on, since Apple recommends an on-state for the fastest charging performance.

If multiple known-good cables and power sources fail, the issue may involve the port, battery or charging electronics and may require Apple service. The cited Apple documents do not provide a user-replaceable battery procedure or a guaranteed repair outcome.

How to compare this design with another mouse

If the underside port affects your buying decision, compare concrete operating characteristics rather than repeating unverified claims about Apple’s motive.

Comparison question What to verify Why it matters
Connector USB-C, Lightning or another standard Determines whether your existing cables fit and whether you need a dedicated spare.
Use during charging Whether the manufacturer permits wired operation while charging Shows whether a depleted battery immediately stops pointer input.
Battery claim The maker’s stated interval and the conditions attached to it Lets you compare an attributed estimate with another attributed estimate, not with an unqualified anecdote.
Port location Bottom, front, side or a removable battery design Indicates whether charging interrupts desk use and how easily the connector can be reached.

For the current Magic Mouse, the source-supported baseline is USB-C, an included woven USB-C cable, no mouse operation while charging, and Apple’s estimate of about a month or more between charges. Any competing product should be assessed using its own manufacturer’s documentation and test conditions.

Bottom line: what is known about Apple’s choice

The Magic Mouse charges from the bottom because that is where Apple placed the connector on both the current USB-C model and the earlier Lightning model. The underside position means the mouse cannot be used while charging, a limitation Apple states explicitly. Apple estimates about a month or more of battery life for the current model, but does not publish a confirmed design rationale for the port location in the cited support and product materials. Choose the correct cable for your generation and charge proactively so the interruption is predictable rather than urgent.
